steam classification is a process for the treatment of commingled municipal solid waste (MSW) with steam under pressure and agitation to transform certain waste components, such as packaging materials, paper products, food waste, into a homogenous cellulosic biomass product. Initial volume reduction of the processed MSW is 50%-70%. The biomass product may be used directly for energy production as combustion or gasification fuel. The biomass may also be further processed to produce clean fiber suitable for recycling into a variety pulp and paper products. The biomass may also be used in the production of medium density fiberboard, plastic lumber, cement and concrete products, asphalt paving, and chemicals. In addition to the biomass, clean recyclable steel and aluminum cans are recovered from the process free of food, labels, and laminates. Recyclable PET plastic bottles are flattened, shrunken, and freed of labels during processing HOPE, LDPE and other plastics are melted during processing and recovered as agglomerates or films suitable for making plastic lumber and pipe. Broken glass, ceramics, rock, ash and dirt may also be recovered and recycled into aggregate for cement, concrete, asphalt and plastic pipe. Textiles may also be recovered and recycled. Other components, generally sterile and inert, may be safely landfilled. The first 500 t/d facility will be in operation in Anaheim, California in January 2005. The patented process has been licensed to World waste Technologies, Inc., San Diego, California for development in the U.S.A. (***), The Fernwood Group, Ltd., Nottingham, U.K. for development in Europe, and International waste Processors Inc., San Diego, California for development in the Middle East and in cooperation with Global Business Navigation, Inc., San Diego, California for Asia.
