The study presented and described an analysis framework for identifying suitable areas for the production of potato in China.Climate,relief,soil and land use databases were created based on GIS which was used as the major technology instrument.Relevant criteria for potato and suitability levels were defined;this information was used to obtain the criteria maps.Then a multi-criteria evaluation approach and GIS were applied to obtain the suitability map for potato.The land use map was used to exclude areas from suitability maps that cannot be allowed to implement crops such as cities and towns,deserts and so on.A series of GIS models were used to identify and analyze the potential distribution for potato farming.The result clearly indicates the location and extent of potato farming areas on different suitability scales,i.e.,very high suitable,high suitable,moderately suitable,low suitable,and not suitable.The suitable location that potato is of great potential to plant in northeast,northwest and southwest of China and Central China is in accordance with the distribution of practical farming areas.The created databases,mapped results,interface of expert system and relevant hardware facilities could construct a complete crop support system for potato.With the increased requirement of foods and vegetables,new adjustments according to this result in potato production spatial distribution would take into consideration socio-political and environment issues.

Small dams/reservoirs site location analysis in a semi-arid region of Mozambique

The water crisis is one of the biggest human problems in developing countries,especially in semi-arid regions where it can form an obstacle to irrigation and cultivation,cattle raising and people's survival.The construction of small dams/reservoirs are a possible solution to remediate this problem.These infrastructures must be located in suitable areas to be successful.This study aimed to find the most suitable locations for small dams/reservoirs in the Tete province region,Mozambique,which has a pronounced water deficit A Geographical Information System(GIS)based approach was used to implement a multicriteria evaluation(MCE)analysis through an Analytic Hierarchical Process(AHP),which included local experts’consultation.Three main categories of suitability were identified:"Not suitable”(15%of total area),"Modestly suitable"(78%),and“Suitable"(7%).We found that 35 of the 38(92%)abandoned small dams/reservoirs were in areas classified as“Modestly suitable”confirming the robustness of our model.We also found that most of the dams/reservoirs currently operating(78%)and planned(73%)are in modestly suitable areas.This finding suggests that the decision to construct dams/reservoirs may not have considered the most critical suitability factors identified in this study.More data and/or additional criteria are required for the full understanding of finding out why so many dams/reservoirs failed before building new ones to address the population’s water needs in the region.

Soil erosion has become a significant environmental problem that threatens eco- systems globally. The risks posed by soil erosion, the trends in the spatial distribution in soil erosion, and the status, intensity, and conservation priority level in the middle reaches of the Yellow River Basin were identified from 1978 to 2010. This study employed a multi-criteria evaluation method integrated with GIS and multi-source remote sensing data including land use, slope gradient and vegetation fractional coverage （VFC）. The erosion status in the study region improved from 1978 to 2010; areas of extremely severe, more severe, and severe soil erosion decreased from 0.05%, 0.94%, and 11.25% in 1978 to 0.04%, 0.81%, and 10.28% in 1998, respectively, and to 0.03%, 0.59%, and 6.87% in 2010, respectively. Compared to the period from 1978 to 1998, the area classed as improvement grade erosion increased by about 47,210.18 km2 from 1998 to 2010, while the area classed as deterioration grade ero- sion decreased by about 17,738.29 km2. Almost all severe erosion regions fall in the 1st and 2rid conservation priority levels, which areas accounted for 3.86% and 1.11% of the study area in the two periods, respectively. This study identified regions where soil erosion control is required and the results provide a reference for policymakers to implement soil conservation measures in the future.

Assessment of land suitability for oilseeds crops(sesame and groundnut)using geospatial techniques:In the case of Diga district,East Wollega zone,western Ethiopia

Sesame and groundnut crops are the major oilseed crops produced for exports and local consumptions in Ethiopia.This study attempted to evaluate land suitability for oilseeds crops using Geographic Information Systems(GIS)and multi-criteria evaluation in Diga district of East Wollega zone,western Ethiopia.To support the growing population,sesame and groundnut land suitability evaluations were carried out to ensure the sustainability of agricultural production.Different data inputs were used,including mainly climate data(temperature and rainfall),topography data(slope),soil data(soil texture,soil depth and soil drainage),and infrastructure data(road and market).In this study,sesame and groundnut land suitability areas were categorized into 4 classes:highly suitable,moderately suitable,marginally suitable,and not suitable.The result revealed that,about 252.1 ha(0.4%)and 113.1 ha(0.2%)were highly suitable for sesame and groundnut respectively.Result showed that most parts of the study area were moderately suitable for sesame and groundnut productions.Specially,the central and western parts of the study area were highly suitable and moderately suitable for sesame production.The study recommended the local communities to utilize the existing potential of the study area for sesame and groundnut productions.Moreover,decision makers should promote the suitability of the area for both small-and large-scale investment on sesame and groundnut production.

The identification of the suitable areas for common oat（Avena sativa L.） and naked oat（Avena nuda L.） in China using multi-criteria evaluation（MCE）approach based on GIS is presented in the current article.Climate,topography,soil,land use and oat variety databases were created.Relevant criteria,suitability levels and their weights for each factor were defined.Then the criteria maps were obtained and turned into the MCE process,and suitability maps for common oat and naked oat were created.The land use and the suitability maps were crossed to identify the suitable areas for each crop.The results identified 397,720 km2 of suitable areas for common oats of forage purpose distributed in 744 counties in 17 provinces,and 556,232 km2 of suitable areas for naked oats of grain purpose distributed in 779 counties in 19 provinces.This result is in accordance with the distribution of farmingpastoral ecozones located in semi-arid regions of northern China.The mapped areas can help define the working limits and serve as indicative zones for oat in China.The created databases,mapped results,interface of expert system and relevant hardware facilities could construct a complete crop support system for oats.
