Rotational motions of the Ms7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquake with ground tilt data

Observation and research of rotational motions induced by earthquake has been ignored in the past decades due to the lack of understanding of important ground rotational motions and practical difficulty involved in directly measuring the rotational components. Currently, there is a paucity of methods to directly measure rotational motions in China. The present study attempts to discuss the possibility of obtaining seismic rotation from ground tilt data. The rotational motions generated by shear dislocation source are derived based on the displacement formula of elastic wavefields in the homogenous space. The characteristics of the three components of translational and rotational motions in near, intermediate, and far fields are compared and analyzed. Based on the corresponding relationship between the rotation and ground tilt on free surface boundary, a method to indirectly construct the rotational motions in the layered half space is obtained. Finally, the theoretical rotational motions generated by the Ms7.0 earthquake in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province, on August 8, 2017 are calculated. The results indicate that the rotational motions generated by the Jiuzhaigou earthquake are concentrated in the vicinity of the epicenter(approximately150 km) and mainly distributed in the area perpendicular to the fault strike. The existence of free surface boundary attenuates the total energy of the rotational field and especially in the direction of the dominant energy. The ground tilt data is compared with rotational motions in the layered half space, and the results indicate that theoretical rotations and actual ground tilt data are essentially consistent, especially in the far field region. Thus, it is possible to obtain horizontal components of rotation from ground tilt data, and this provides more information for a complete description of the motion characteristics of an underground medium.

The surge-heave-pitch coupling motions of the Φ- type vertical axis wind turbine supported by the truss Spar floating foundation

The motions of the floating vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) with consideration of the coupling between the aerodynamics and the hydrodynamics are calculated in this paper. The surge-heave-pitch coupling nonlinear equations of the floating VAWT are established. The aerodynamic loads are obtained by applying the double-multiple-stream tube theory with consideration of the dynamic stall and the floating foundation motion. The motion performances of a 5 MW Φ - Darrieus type floating VAWT are studied with its foundation of the Spar type with heave plates. It is shown that the amplitude of the heave motion of the floating VAWT is small when the heave plates are equipped. The effects of the wind and wave loads on the floating VAWT motions are assessed. The results show that the mean values of the surge and the pitch of the floating VAWT are mainly related to the wind loads;the standard deviations of the surge, the heave, and the pitch are mainly related to the wave loads. In the regular wave cases, the frequencies of the surge, the heave and the pitch are dominated by the wave frequencies, and the components of the 2P responses (caused by the aerodynamic loads) of the pitch are small. The 2P responses of the pitch are more significant in the irregular wave cases as compared with those in the regular wave cases.

Review of the Application of Rotational motions in Seismology

Rotational seismology is an emerging field for studying all aspects of rotational ground motions induced by earthquakes,explosions,and ambient vibrations. It is of interest to a wide range of geophysical disciplines,including strong-motion seismology,earthquake engineering,earthquake physics,seismic instrumentation,as well as to the complete description of particle motions( translational motion,rotational motion and deformation).This article mainly summarizes the application of rotational motions to seismology. Based on the collocated measurements of translational motion and rotational motion, the theoretical formulas of calculating the teleseismic Rayleigh wave and the Love wave phase velocity are derived. Taking the Siberian earthquake as an example,the phase velocity structure near the station is calculated. As a ring laser that's sensitive only to SH-type motion,one of the expectations of the ring laser measurements is to help seismologists separate P and S waves in the wave field. It also helps distinguish Love and Rayleigh wave energy in the ocean-generated noise field,as well as determine the back azimuth of oceanic noise sources. The long-period toroidal modes of free oscillation, one of the most challenging observations in seismology,are then observed with a ring laser. Finally,the importance and practicability of multi-parameter inversions including rotational observations are expounded. At the end of this paper,we present the existing problems in rotational seismology research and its broad application prospects.

Systems Approach to Mitotic Chromosome motions

Recent experiments revealing possible nanoscale electrostatic interactions in force generation at kinetochores for chromosome motions have prompted speculation regarding possible models for interactions between positively charged molecules in kinetochores and negative charge on C-termini near the plus ends of microtubules. A clear picture of how kinetochores establish and maintain a dynamic coupling to microtubules for force generation during the complex motions of mitosis remains elusive. The molecular cell biology paradigm requires that specific molecules, or molecular geometries, for force generation be identified. However, it is possible to account for mitotic chromosome motions within a systems approach in terms of experimentally known cellular electric charge distributions interacting over nanometer distances.

Calculation of the Centrally Symmetric and Vortex Forces Acting on Momentum in Distortion Tensor Field: Explanation of High-Temperature Plasma and Vortex motions

The paper deals with calculation of the centrally symmetric and vortex forces for the momentum of a particle in the distortion tensor field from the action minimum, by analogy with the calculation of forces for a charge in an electromagnetic field. It is demonstrated that: 1) The compensating interaction tensor corresponds to the distortion tensor in a solid. 2) The centrally symmetric force of the distortion tensor acts on the momentum as a charge, and is analogous to the Coulomb force. In a gas, it results in change in the momentum value of the molecules exponentially to some extent. The action of this force explains the high-temperature plasma in the gas. 3) The vortex force of the distortion tensor is equivalent to the Peach-Koehler force in a solid. It acts on the momentum flow, similar to the Lorentz magnetic force, and explains the vortex motions in space, in the form of “black holes”, and in the atmosphere, in the form of cyclones and anticyclones.

The Kinetic Energy Formula for the Closed Planar Homothetic Inverse motions in Complex Plane

In this paper, the kinetic energy formula was expressed during one-parameter closed planar homothetic inverse motions in complex plane. Then the relation between the kinetic energy formula and the Steiner formula was given. As an example the sagittal motion of a telescopic crane was considered. This motion was described by a double hinge consisting of the fixed control panel of telescopic crane and the moving arm of telescopic crane. The results were applied to experimentally measured motion.

A simple approach to the formation of a Hamiltonian matrix for some Schrodinger equations describing the molecules with large amplitude motions has been proposed. The algorithm involving one or several variables has been concretely defined for the basis functions represented by Fourier series and orthogonal polynomials, taking Hermitian polynomials as an example.
