Simulation of the Westerly Jet Axis in Boreal Winter by the Climate System model FGOALS-g2

The major features of the westerly jets in boreal winter, consisting of the Middle East jet stream （MEJS）, East Asian jet stream （EAJS） and North Atlantic jet stream （NAJS）, simulated by a newly developed climate system model, were evaluated with an emphasis on the meridional location of the westerly jet axis （WJA）. The model was found to exhibit fairly good performance in simulating the EAJS and NAJS, whereas the MEJS was much weaker and indistinguishable in the model. Compared with the intensity bias, the southward shift of the WJA seems to be a more remarkable deficiency. From the perspective of Ertel potential vorticity, the profiles along different westerly jet cores in the model were similar with those in the reanalysis but all shifted southward, indicating an equatorward displacement of the dynamic tropopause and associated climatology. Diagnosis of the thermodynamic equation revealed that the model produced an overall stronger heating source and the streamfunction quantifying the convection and overturning Hadley circulation shifted southward significantly in the middle and upper troposphere. The two maximum centers of eddy kinetic energy, corresponding to the EAJS and NAJS, were reproduced, whereas they all shifted southwards with a much reduced intensity. A lack of transient eddy activity will reduce the efficiency of poleward heat transport, which may partially contribute to the meridionally non-uniform cooling in the middle and upper troposphere. As the WJA is closely related to the location of the Hadley cell, tropopause and transient eddy activity, the accurate simulation of westerly jets will greatly improve the atmospheric general circulation and associated climatology in the model.

Spatiotemporal Evaluation and Future Projection of Diurnal Temperature Range over the Tibetan Plateau in CMIP6 models

The diurnal temperature range(DTR) serves as a vital indicator reflecting both natural climate variability and anthropogenic climate change. This study investigates the historical and projected multitemporal DTR variations over the Tibetan Plateau. It assesses 23 climate models from phase 6 of the Coupled model Intercomparison Project(CMIP6) using CN05.1 observational data as validation, evaluating their ability to simulate DTR over the Tibetan Plateau. Then, the evolution of DTR over the Tibetan Plateau under different shared socioeconomic pathway(SSP) scenarios for the near,middle, and long term of future projection are analyzed using 11 selected robustly performing models. Key findings reveal:(1) Among the models examined, BCC-CSM2-MR, EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-CC, EC-Earth3-Veg, EC-Earth3-Veg-LR,FGOALS-g3, FIO-ESM-2-0, GFDL-ESM4, MPI-ESM1-2-HR, MPI-ESM1-2-LR, and INM-CM5-0 exhibit superior integrated simulation capability for capturing the spatiotemporal variability of DTR over the Tibetan Plateau.(2) Projection indicates a slightly increasing trend in DTR on the Tibetan Plateau in the SSP1-2.6 scenario, and decreasing trends in the SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SPP5-8.5 scenarios. In certain areas, such as the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, western hinterland of the Tibetan Plateau, southern Kunlun, and the Qaidam basins, the changes in DTR are relatively large.(3) Notably, the warming rate of maximum temperature under SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SPP5-8.5 is slower compared to that of minimum temperature, and it emerges as the primary contributor to the projected decrease in DTR over the Tibetan Plateau in the future.

Evaluation of meteorological predictions by the WRF model at Barrow, Alaska and Summit, Greenland in the Arctic in April 2019

Accurate meteorological predictions in the Arctic are important in response to the rapid climate change and insufficient meteorological observations in the *** this study,we adopted a high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting(WRF)model to simulate the meteorology at two Arctic stations(Barrow and Summit)in April *** results were also evaluated by using surface measurements and statistical *** addition,weather charts during the studied time period were also used to assess the model *** results demonstrate that the WRF model is able to accurately capture the meteorological parameters for the two Arctic stations and the weather systems such as cyclones and anticyclones in the ***,we found the model performance in predicting the surface pressure the best while the performance in predicting the wind the worst among these meteorological ***,the wind predictions at these Arctic stations were found to be more accurate than those at urban stations in mid-latitude regions,due to the differences in land features and anthropogentic heat sources between these *** addition,a comparison of the simulation results showed that the prediction of meteorological conditions at Summit is superior to that at *** reasons for the deviations in temperature predictions between these two Arctic stations are uncertainties in the treatments of the sea ice and the cloud in the *** respect to the wind,the deviations may source from the overestimation of the wind over the sea and at coastal stations.

Prediction and Evaluation of Winter Soil Moisture in Xinjiang Based on NMME

Based on North American Multi model Ensemble(NMME)and monthly average soil moisture return data of five models in Xinjiang region during 1982-2010,using ERA-interim reanalysis soil moisture data for verification,the abilities of five models and simple ensemble mean to predict winter soil moisture in Xinjiang region were *** results showed that forecasting skill of CanCM4 in single model was the best,while forecasting skill of CESM1 was the *** the increase of lead time,the forecasting skills of all models gradually decreased,containing *** NMME gradually reflects the advantages in longer lead time,and its forecasting skills in Lead1-Season,Lead2-Season and Lead3-Season were higher than all single model,illustrating that multi model simple ensemble mean is more useful for predicting soil moisture in longer lead time,which is helpful for improving prediction *** spatial distribution,correlation of all models in winter in southwest Xinjiang(Tarim Basin)and northwest region was ***3 and CanCM4 models had higher correlation in northern ***,root mean square error was also smaller in corresponding region and larger in southwest *** skills of GFDL-CM2p1 and CESM1 in eastern area of central Xinjiang were higher,and root mean square error in this area was also *** paper also could lay the foundation for further studying prediction of soil drought.

Accurate knowledge of statistical properties of SAR data plays an essential role in SAR image processing and *** studies have been made for discovering the relationship between the physical features and statistical properties of SAR data,and some statistical models for modeling SAR data having been proposed and *** this paper,we focused on four often used statistical models:the Weibull,Log-normal,Gamma and K *** models are used to fit target and clutter regions in SAR data provided by MSTAR,and through three different goodness-of-fit tests,we assess the performance of the four statistical models for modeling the clutter and target in the SAR *** results show that K distribution performs best and Log-normal performs worst for modeling clutter region,on the other hand,Log-normal distribution performs best while K distribution performs worst for modeling target region.
