The cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system is a demonstration device capable of generating high-power millimeter electromagnetic waves of a specific wavelength and observing their effects on living *** irradiates a biological sample placed in a 30×30×50 cm^(3)cell with electromagnetic waves in the 3.15-mm-wavelength region(with an output of≥1 W)and analyzes the temperature change of the sample.A vacuum electronic device-based coupled-cavity backward-wave oscillator converts the electron energy of the electron beam into radiofrequency(RF)energy and radiates it to the target through an antenna,increasing the temperature through the absorption of RF energy in the *** system causes pain and ultimately reduces combat power.A cell-type continuous electromagnetic radiation system consisting of four parts—an electromagnetic-wave generator,a highvoltage power supply,a test cell,and a system controller—generates an RF signal of≥1 W in a continuous waveform at a 95-GHz center frequency,as well as a chemical solution with a dielectric constant similar to that of the skin of a living *** increase of 5°C lasting approximately 10 s was confirmed through an experiment.

Quadruple-frequency millimeter-wave generation using second-order rational harmonic mode-locking technique

A novel method for generating quadruple-frequency millimeter-wave （MMW） by using an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser is proposed and demonstrated. In this approach, the optical Mach-Zehnder intensity modulator （MZM） is biased to suppress the odd-order optical sidebands, the fiber laser operates in the second-order rational harmonic mode, and a fiber Bragg grating （FBG） notch filter is used to block the optical carrier. When the MZM is driven by a fixed radio-frequency （RF） source of 10 GHz, a stable MMW signal of 40 GHz with the phase noise better than -76 dBc/Hz at 1-kHz offset is generated.

millimeter-wave modulated optical pulse generated by pulse repetition rate multiplication and temporal Talbot effect

A novel scheme was proposed to generate a millimeter-wave （MMW） optical pulse by combining pulse repetition rate multiplication （PRRM） technology and temporal Talbot effect （TTE）. A cascaded Mach- Zehnder interferometer （MZI） lattice was used for PRRM, and a linearly chirped fiber grating （LCFG） was used as TTE. The basic principle was analyzed by using a Gaussian input short pulse and its characteristics were discussed by numerical simulation. It is shown that the proposed scheme is feasible for MMW signal generation and has potential merits for practical application of radio over fiber （ROF） technology.

Carrier suppression in quadruple frequency modulation by cascaded optical external modulators for millimeter-wave generation

The optical carrier suppression in optical quadruple frequency modulation by cascaded external modulators is investigated theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the optical carrier suppression ratio is related with not only the initial phase difference of electrical signals applied on the two modulators, but also the optical phase shift between the two modulators. The maximum suppression ratio can be achieved when the total phase difference is equal to nπ＋π/2 （n = 1, 2,…）, which is verified by experiments. By properly controlling the total phase shift, 40-GHz millimeter-wave is generated by using a 10-GHz radio frequency （RF） source and the modulators.

Simulation of thermal processes in metamaterial millimeter-wave to infrared converter for millimeter-wave imager

The main characteristics of millimeter-wave(MM-wave)image detector were simulated by means of accurate numerical modeling of thermophysical processes in a metamaterial MM-to-IR *** converter represents a multilayer structure consisting of an ultra thin resonant metamaterial absorber and a perfect emissive *** absorber consists of a dielectric self-supporting film that is metallized from both sides.A micropattern is fabricated from one *** absorption of the MM waves induces the converter heating that yields enhancement of IR emission from the emissive *** emission is detected by IR *** this contribution an accurate numerical model for simulation of the thermal processes in the converter structure was created by using COMSOL Multiphysics *** simulation results are in a good agreement with experimental results that validates the *** simulation shows that the real-time operation is provided for the converter thickness less than 3µm and time response can be improved by decreasing of the converter *** energy conversion efficiency of MM waves into IR radiation is over 80%.The converter temperature increase is a linear function of a MM-wave radiation power within three orders of the dynamic *** blooming effect and ways of its reducing are also *** model allows us to choose the ways of converter structure optimization and improvement of image detector parameters.

A millimeter-wave WDM-ROF system based on supercon- tinuum technique

In this paper, a new millimeter-wave （mm-wave） wavelength division multiplexing （WDM） system based on radio-over- fiber （ROF） technology is proposed. In this approach a multi-wavelength light source is obtained by supercontinuum （SC） technique, and mm-wave signals are obtained by using optical heterodyning method. We experimentally demonstrate the generation of optical carriers for 6-WDM channels, obtain 40 GHz ram-wave signals by employing optical heterodyne technique, and successfully achieve low error rate transmission of 2.5 Gbit/s in WDM channels over a distance of 25 km in a G.652 fiber. The experimental results verify that the proposed solution is feasible and cost effective.

Remotely sensing an object's rotational orientation using the orbital angular momentum of light(Invited Paper)

Remotely sensing an object with light is essential for burgeoning technologies, such as autonomous vehicles. Here, an object＇s rotational orientation is remotely sensed using light＇s orbital angular momentum. An object is illuminated by and partially obstructs a Gaussian light beam. Using an SLM, the phase differences between the partially obstructed Gaussian light beam＇s constituent OAM modes are measured analogous to Stokes polar- imetry. It is shown that the phase differences are directly proportional to the object＇s rotational orientation. Comparison to the use of a pixelated camera and implementation in the millimeter wave regime are discussed.

Practical millimeter-wave holographic imaging system with good robustness

A practical millimeter-wave （MMW） holographic imaging system with good robustness is developed for the detection of concealed weapons at security checkpoints, especially at the airport. The system is used to scan the passenger and detect any weapons hidden in their clothes. To reconstruct the three dimensional image, a holographic MMW imaging algorithm based on aperture synthesis and backscattering is presented. The system is active and works at 28-33 GHz. As a practical imaging system, the robustness is analyzed in detail in terms of the peak signal-to-noise ratio.

Photonic generation of high quality frequency-tunable millimeter wave and terahertz wave

A scheme for the photonic generation of frequency-tunable millimeter wave and terahertz wave signals based on a highly flat optical frequency comb is proposed and demonstrated *** frequency comb is generated using two cascaded phase modulators（PMs）and an electro-absorption modulator（EAM）.The frequency comb covers a 440-GHz frequency range,with 40-GHz comb spacing and less than 2-dB amplitude *** filtering out two of the comb lines with 50 dB out of the band suppression ratio,high frequency-purity and low phase noise millimeter wave or terahertz wave signals are successfully generated,with frequencies ranging from 40 to 440 GHz.

An approach of multiple-frequency millimeter-wave(mm-wave)signal generation is proposed for radio-over-fiber(RoF)system with multiple-frequency basestations(MFBSs).Two groups of orthogonally polarized signals are injected into a semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA),and subsequently ten new different wavelengths are generated via four-wave mix-ing(FWM)*** each MFBS,different wavelengths are filtered out using demultiplexer and then input to a photodiode(PD)to generate the mm-wave signals with the frequencies from 52 GHz to 68 GHz at the interval of 2 *** results verify that the proposed multiple-frequency generation for MFBS RoF system can work properly.
