Modified Multi-Resolution Telescopic Search Algorithm for Block-Matching Motion Estimation

This paper presents a modified multi-resolution telescopic search algorithm (MRTlcSA) for the block-matching motion estimation. A novel inverse telescopic search is substituted for the conventional telescopic search, that reduces the on-chip memory size and memory bandwidth for VLSI implementation. In addition, strategies of motion track and adaptive search window are applied to reduce the computational complexity of motion estimation. Simulation results show that, compared with the MRTleSA, the proposed algorithm reduces the computational load to only 30% while preserving almost the same image quality. Comparisons on hardware cost and power consumption of the VLSI implementations using the two algorithms are also presented in the paper.

A real-time two-dimensional （2D） triangulation range finder is presented, which is composed of two linear complementary metal oxidation semiconductor （CMOS） chips, two camera lenses, and four light emitting diodes （LEDs）. The high order distortion in image aberrations is the main factor responsible for the coarse errors. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with experiments and the correction equation is used to obtain more reliable results with the unique distortion coefficient in tile whole working region.

A 7-chip, 280 Gb/s optical code-division multiplexing （OCDM） system incorporating quaternary phase coding and decoding superstructured fiber Bragg gratings （SSFBGs） is experimentally demonstrated. Only ordinary phase masks and sub-micrometer precision are needed to fabricate the encoding and decoding SSFBGs. Interchannel interference noise is also considered and evaluated, 2-channel 40 （Gb/s）/channel （2 ×40 Gb/s） signal transmission is demonstrated.

Structure and design are proposed for a kind of novel polymer Mach-Zehnder electro-optic(EO)switch using side-coupled M series-cascaded EO *** are proposed to analyze its switching *** dependences of the device’s performances on M are thoroughly analyzed and *** the increase of M from 2 to 10,the switching voltages for the 9 devices are as low as 0.84 V,0.82 V,0.52 V,0.5 V,0.37 V,0.36 V,0.29 V,0.28 V and 0.24 V,respectively;whereas the crosstalks under bar state are within-20.79--6.53 d B and those under cross state are within-20.36--5.29 d *** analysis results indicate that a smaller M is preferred for dropping the insertion loss and crosstalk,and a larger M should be selected to increase the optical bandwidth and minimize the switching ***,due to low switching voltage,the proposed device shows potential applications in optical networks-on-chip.

A compact passively Q-switched Yb：YAG microchip laser is demonstrated. Featuring a semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror （SESAM）, the laser yields pulses of 219 ps when the length of the microchip Yb：YAG crystal is 100 #m and the beam quality is M2 〈 1.3. To the best of our knowledge, pulses from the proposed laser are the shortest Q-switching pulses obtained from Yb：YAG microchip lasers currently available.
