In wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs),microplastics(MPs)are complex,especially with mixed domestic–industrial *** random grab sampling can roughly depict the distribution and characteristics of MPs but can not accurately reflect their daily *** this study,the concentration,shape,polymer type,size,and color of MPs were analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy(detection limit of 0.05 mm)throughout treatment stages of three mixed domestic–industrial WWTPs(W1,W2,and W3)in Wuxi City,China,and the daily fluctuations of MPs were also obtained by dense grab sampling within 24 *** influent samples,the average MP concentration of 392.2 items/L in W1 with 10%industrial wastewater was much higher than those in W2(71.2 items/L with 10%industrial wastewater)and W3(38.3 items/L with 60%industrial wastewater).White polyethylene granules with a diameter less than 0.5 mm from plastic manufacturing were the most dominant MPs in the influent of W1,proving the key role of industrial sources in MPs *** addition,the daily dense sampling results showed that MP concentration in W1 influent fluctuated widely between 29.1 items/L and 4617.6 items/L within a ***,few MPs(less than 4.0 items/L)in these WWTPs effluents were attributed to the effective removal of wastewater treatment ***,further attention should be paid to regulating the primary sources of MPs.

V-shaped substrate for surface and volume enhanced Raman spectroscopic analysis of microplastics

Research on the microplastics(MPs)is developing towards smaller size,but corresponding methods for the rapid and accurate detection of microplastics,especially nanoplastics still present *** this work,a novel surface and volume enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate was developed for the rapid detection of microplastic particles below 5μ*** gold nanoparticles(NPs)were deposited onto the surface and into the V-shaped nanopores of anodized aluminum oxide(AAO)through magnetron sputtering or ion sputtering,and then AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate was obtained and studied for microplastic *** performance of AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate was evaluated through the detection of polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate *** indicated that individual polystyrene sphere with a diameter of 1μm can be well detected on AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate,and the maximum enhancement factor(EF)can reach *** addition,microplastics in ambient atmospheric samples were collected and tested to verify the effectiveness of the AuNPs@V-shaped AAO SERS substrate in the real *** study provides a rapid,economic and simple method for detecting and identifying microplastics with small size.

Data quality assessment for studies investigating microplastics and nanoplastics in food products: Are current data reliable?

Data on the occurrence of microplastics and nanoplastics(MP/NPs)in foods have been used to assess the human health risk caused by the consumption of MP/*** reliability of the data,however,remains unclear because of the lack of international standards for the analysis of MP/NPs in ***,the data quality needs to be assessed for accurate health risk *** study developed 10 criteria applicable to the quality assessment of data on MP/NPs in ***,the reliability of 71 data records(69 of them only focused on MPs)was assessed by assigning a score of 2(reliable without restrictions),1(reliable but with restrictions),or 0(unreliable)on each *** results showed that only three data records scored 2 or 1 on all criteria,and six data records scored 0 on as many as six criteria.A total of 58 data records did not include information on positive controls,and 12 data records did not conduct the polymer identification,which could result in the overestimation or underestimation of MP/*** results also indicated that the data quality of unprocessed foods was more reliable than that of processed ***,we proposed a quality assurance and quality control protocol to investigate MP/NPs in ***,the characteristics of MP/NPs used in toxicological studies and those existing in foods showed a remarkable discrepancy,causing the uncertainty of health risk ***,both the estimated exposure of MP/NPs and the claimed potential health risks should be treated with caution.

Sources, distribution, behavior, and detection techniques of microplastics in soil: A review

In recent years, the problem of environmental pollution caused by microplastics has attracted widespread attention. This paper reviews the latest research progress in terms of the source, content and distribution characteristics, harm, and detection technology of soil microplastics by referring to the relevant literature on soil microplastics worldwide. It concludes that:(1) Existing studies worldwide have detected the presence of microplastics in soil, water, and atmosphere, and the use of agricultural films, sewage sludge,and other man-made activities are the main sources of microplastics in soil;(2) microplastics can adsorb heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants and antibiotics in soil, change the physical and chemical properties of soil. This will result in composite pollution and harm to the ecosystem;(3) microplastics in soil not only can destroy the activity of key soil microorganisms, but also enter the body of crops and soil animals, affecting normal growth of crops and soil animals, and further threaten human health;(4) at present, there is no unified operating standard for the sampling, processing, and detection process of microplastics. Analysis methods such as visual inspection, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis have both advantages and disadvantages, and emerging detection technologies require urgent *** have become a new pollutant in soil and their distribution characteristics are closely related to human activities. They pollute the environment and threaten human health through the food *** related research on soil microplastics has just begun, it will become the focus of research in the future.

At present,microplastics have attracted much concern worldwide,but still few researches have focused especially on aquaculture *** this study,investigations were conducted in Zhijiang(ZJ)and Yidu(YD)areas of Hubei,China,typical freshwater aquaculture bases of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River,on the occurrence and distribution characteristics of microplastics in fishpond *** was found that microplastics presented in all samples from water,sediment,fish,and fish *** microplastics detected had a diameter ofmicroplastic abundance in fish was correlated with that in sediment and *** potential ecological risk index values indicated that water,sediment,and fish samples were under moderate pollution *** results of this study illustrated the microplastics pollution situation in freshwater cultured fishpond systems,and the findings presented here will serve as a reference for future investigations of the environmental risks of microplastics in aquaculture environment.

Employment of Waste from the Textile Industry for the Production of Nanocomposites Aiming at the Generation of Thermal Shrinkable Films and the Non-Formation of microplastics

With the increase of incorrectly discarded materials in the environment, including clothes, the need for recycling and reusing them becomes one of the alternatives to work around this problem, following the law of the 3 Rs. However, these polymeric materials which are deposited in the marine environment and land generate microplastics, due to their degradation/fragmentation due to the action of the weather, in these regions, including being carried by the air and transported from various regions. With the aim of reducing the impact of this inappropriate disposal and obtaining a material that does not generate microplastics, this study used waste from the textile industry, which would be unusable, and a biodegradable polymer. The tissue residues were submitted to acid hydrolysis with sulfuric acid, in order to weaken the interactions between the cellulose fibrils and promote a better dispersion of the latter when processed with the polymer, during the extrusion process, generating biodegradable polymeric nanocomposites. The results showed that the samples submitted to acid hydrolysis presented a higher degree of crystallinity and a greater number of interactions and lower mobility of hydrogen atoms. In addition, the samples treated for a longer time showed a small release of fibrils, suggesting that this treatment can help in the production of nanocomposites during their extrusion.
