Acid resistance of methanogenic bacteria in a two-stage anaerobic process treating high concentration methanol wastewater

In this study,the two-stage upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB)system and batch experiments were employed to evaluate the performance of anaerobic digestion for the treatment of high concentration methanol *** acid resistance of granular sludge and methanogenic bacteria and their metabolizing activity were *** results show that the pH of the first UASB changed from 4.9 to 5.8 and 5.5 to 6.2 for the second ***,these were not the advisable pH levels that common metha-nogenic bacteria could *** methanogenic bacteria of the system,*** barkeri,had some acid resis-tance and could still degrade methanol at pH *** the meth-anogenic bacteria were trained further,their acid resistance would be improved *** sludge of the system could protect the methanogenic bacteria within its body against the impact of the acidic environment and make them degrade methanol at pH *** performance of granular sludge was attributed to its structure,bacteria species,and the distribution of bacterium inside the granule.

Microbial dehalogenation of trichlorophenol by a bacterial consortium: characterization and mechanism

Chlorinated phenolic compounds are a class of toxic and refractory organic pollutants. The pollution caused by chlorophenols poses serious ecological and environmental problems. A stable bacterial consortium capable of reductively dechlorinating trichlorophenol was isolated using chlorophenol as the sole source of carbon and energy. The physiological characteristics of the mixed cultures were studied and the results show that the consortium could use pyruvate as the carbon and energy source. The fermentation of pyruvate, sulfate reduction and dechlorination process proceeded strictly in succession within this consortium. The effect of specific inhibitors on the dechlorinating activity of the consortium was investigated, and the results indicate that sulfate and molybdate (1 mmol/L) have a strong inhibitive influence on the dechlorination activity. Fluo-rescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique was applied to analyzing the composition of the consortium and the results reveal that one major subpopulation within the consortium was phy-logenetically affiliated to gamma and delta subclass of Proteobacteria.
