Effect of calcium and soy isoflavone supplementation on bone mineral density of women with different menstrual status

In order to find out the effective alternative treatments in peri-and post-menopausal women,we carried out the research.Study design was observational experimental study with duration of 6 mon.A total of 250 female subjects were included in the study.Results showed that the bone mass density or T-score in menstruating women was increased after the use of calcium and showed a highly significant difference(P<0.001).In both peri-and post-menopausal women,the values of bone mass density or T-score was non significantly increased after the use of calcium.Values of bone mass density in peri-and postmenopausal women were significantly increased(P<0.001) after the use of phytoestrogen.It is concluded that phytoestrogen is a better treatment therapy of osteopenia/osteoporosis as compared to calcium treatment.However further research is needed in large number of women to meet a better conclusion.

Infertility is one of the most common non-communicable diseases,affecting both men and women equally.Ovarian reserve,the number of primordial follicles in the ovaries is believed to be the most important determinants for female fertility.Anti-Mullerian hormone(AMH)secreted from granulosa cells of growing follicles is recognized as the most important biomarker for ovarian reserve.Ovarian reserve models have been developed using AMH and other hormonal indicators,thus childbearing plans and reproductive choices could be arranged by women.In assisted reproductive technology cycles,measurement of AMH helps to predict ovarian response and guide recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone dosing in women.Serum AMH level is increasingly being recognized as a potential surrogate marker for polycystic ovarian morphology,one of the criteria for diagnosis of polycystic ovarian syndrome.AMH is also secreted by Sertoli cells of testes in men,and AMH measurements in the prediction of surgical sperm recovery rate in men have also been investigated.AMH levels are significantly higher in boys than in girls before puberty.Therefore,serum levels of AMH in combination with testosterone is used for the differential diagnosis of disorders of sex development,anorchia,non-obstructive azoospermia,and persistent Mullerian duct syndrome.Recently,serum AMH measurements have also been used in fertility preservation programs in oncofertility,screening for granulosa cell tumors,and prediction of menopause applications.In this review,we will focus on clinical application of AMH in fertility assessments for healthy men and women,as well as for cancer patients.

Although cardiovascular disease(CVD) has always been perceived as a pathology regarding essentially males,incidence and death from cardiovascular events dramatically increase after menopause in women.Obviously,while many aspects of CVD are similar in both sexes,it is now clear that there are significant differences as well.Exploration of these gender-related differences in CVD might provide a basis for the development of new strategies in the management of patients with CVD from a gender point of view.In particular,a growing amount of data suggested the possible major role of oxidative stress in female patients and the possibility to integrate this new biomarker in future study evaluating CVD risk in women.

OBJECTIVE To reveal the under mechanism of how Liuwei Dihuang(LWDH)inhibits the phenotypic con⁃version of VSMCs.METHODS 24 ApoE-/-mice were divided into 4 groups:sham group,model group,E2 group,and LWDH group.Six C57BN/L6 mice were used as control group.The primary VSMCs were divided into control group,model group,E2 group,LWDH group,LWDH+MPP group,and LWDH+PHTPP group with or without control siRNA,ERαsiRNA,ERβsiRNA,and myocardin siRNA.Oil red staining was used to evaluate the lipid deposition in the cardiac aorta.Serum chemistry analysis to test serum TG,TC,LDL,and HDL.Immunofluorescence staining was used to testα-SMA,osteopontin and F-actin.Immunohistochemical staining was performed to check out the myocardin in the cardiac aorta.The mRNA levels ofα-SMA,osteopontin,ERα,ERβ,SRC3 and myocardin were detected by real time-PCR,and the protein expression levels of them were detected by Western blotting.Co-immunoprecipitation was proceeded to test the interaction between ERαand SRC3 and SRC3 and myocardin.Flow cytometry was used to check out the cell cycle.Wound healing assay and Transwell were managed to evaluate the migration capacity of VSMCs.RESULTS In vivo administration of LWDH suppressed atherosclerotic symptoms,decreases phenotypic marker of vascular endothelial cell,and increases phenotypic marker of VSMC in ovariectomized ApoE-/-female mice.Moreover,LWDH significantly increased the mRNA and protein expression levels of ERα,ERβ,SRC3 and myocardin in the cardiac aorta of ovariecto⁃mized ApoE-/-female mice.In vitro,LWDH altered cell cycle and reduced the elevated cyclinD protein expression migra⁃tion capacity and in the model VSMCs.In addition,LWDH inhibited phenotypic conversion and promoted the expression of ER,SRC3,and myocardin of the primary VSMC phenotypic conversion model.Inhibition of ERαalmost completely eliminated the impacts of LWDH onα-SMA and osteopontin.Furthermore,LWDH promoted the interaction between ERαand SRC3 and up-regulated the co-activation of SRC3 and myocardin.CONCLUSION LWDH could inhib

AIM: To assess the aetiological role of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in adult patients with ironrefractory or iron-dependent anaemia of previously unknown origin. METHODS: Consecutive patients with chronic irondeficient anaemia (IDA) with H. pylori infection and a negative standard work-up were prospectively evaluated. All of them had either iron refractoriness or iron dependency. Response to H. pylori eradication was assessed at 6 and 12 mo from follow-up. H. pylori infection was considered to be the cause of the anaemia when a complete anaemia resolution without iron supplements was observed after eradication. RESULTS: H. pylori was eradicated in 88 of the 89 patients. In the non-eradicated patient the four eradicating regimens failed. There were violations of protocol in 4 patients, for whom it was not possible to ascertain the cause of the anaemia. Thus, 84 H. pylori eradicated patients (10 men; 74 women) were available to assess the effect of eradication on IDA. H. pylori infection was considered to be the aetiology of IDA in 32 patients (38.1%; 95%CI: 28.4%-48.8%). This was more frequent in men/postmenopausal women than in premenopausal women (75% vs 23.3%; P < 0.0001) with an OR of 9.8 (95%CI: 3.3-29.6). In these patients, anaemia resolution occurred in the first follow-up visit at 6 mo, and no anaemia or iron deficiency relapse was observed after a mean follow-up of 21 ± 2 mo. CONCLUSION: Gastric H. pylori infection is a frequent cause of iron-refractory or iron-dependent anaemia of previously unknown origin in adult patients.

Background:Hot flashes are one of the most common symptoms in menopause and significantly affect the quality of life of 67% of menopausal women.Acupuncture is found to be a low risk treatment in treating hot flashes but the evidence for its effectiveness is inconclusive.We developed an optimized acupuncture treatment protocol and designed a randomized controlled trial(RCT) to assess the efficacy of acupuncture for reducing hot flashes in menopausal women.Methods:This is a single-site,single-blind,randomized sham-controlled trial with two parallel arms.A total of 60 eligible patients will be recruited and randomly assigned to either the acupuncture group(n=30) or the sham acupuncture group(n=30).Treatment will be given twice a week,for 30 min,for six consecutive weeks.The primary outcome is the hot flashes scores,assessed using the validated hot flashes diary at baseline,week 3,week 6 and week 10.The secondary outcome will be measured by menopause-specific quality of life(MENQOL) at baseline,week 6,and week 10.Meanwhile,any adverse events will be recorded.Discussion:If the outcome of this study confirms acupuncture to be an effective therapy to reduce hot flashes in menopausal women,we expect this study to inspire further investigations and provide useful information in forming an optimal acupuncture treatment protocol for clinic.Trial registration:Chinese Clinical Trial Registry identifier:ChiCTR1800018638,Date of registration:30 th September 2018.URL:http://***/showproj.aspx?proj=31462.

Aim: Beneficial effects of virgin coconut oil (VCO) consumption to improve cognition in menopausal females remain inconclusive. This study examined the effect of VCO supplementation in aging cycling and non-cycling rodents to assess its impact on cognition. Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats (10 - 18 months) were randomly assigned to a supplemented VCO group (SVCO) that received oral doses of 1.42 mL/kg/day VCO (n = 10) and a non-supplemented (NVCO) group (n = 10). Their performance in a biased Y-maze discriminative learning paradigm was assessed over a 16-week period. Rats were initially allowed 3 minutes to explore the maze (habituated) and subsequently pre-trained in the non-preferred, white chamber to associate the presentation of a tone with a treat (reward).
