Animated images in the analysis of zebrafish behavior

This invited review is based upon a recent oral paper I presented at the Virtual Reality Symposiumof the 34th International Ethological Conference （2015, Cairns, Australia）, and as such it describesstudies conducted mainly in my own laboratory. It reviews how we utilized visual stimuli for induc-ing behavioral responses in the zebrafish with a focus on shoaling, group forming behavior. Thezebrafish is gaining increasing popularity in neuroscience. With this interest, its behavior is alsomore frequently studied. One of the many advantages of the zebrafish over traditional laboratoryrodents is that this species is diurnal, and it relies heavily upon its visual system. Thus, similarly toour own species, zebrafish respond to visual stimuli in a robust and easily quantifiable manner. Forthe past decade, we have been exploring how to use such visual stimuli, and have developed nu-merous paradigms with which we can induce and quantify a variety of behavioral responses,including shoaling. This review summarizes some of these studies, and discusses questions includ-ing whether one should use live fish as stimulus, whether and how one could present animated（moving images） of fish, and how one could optimize a range of stimulus presentation parametersto elicit the most robust responses in zebrafish. Although the zebrafish is a relative newcomer inethology and behavioral neuroscience, and although many of our findings only represent the firststeps in this research, our results suggest that the behavioral analysis of the zebrafish will have animportant place in biomedical research.

Quantum leakage of collective excitations of atomic ensemble induced by spatial motion

We generalize the conception of quantum leakage for the atomic collective excitation states. By making use of the atomic coherence state approach, we study the influence of the atomic spatial motion on the symmetric collective states of 2-level atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous coupling. In the macroscopic limit, we analyze the quantum decoherence of the collective atomic state by calculating the quantum leakage for a very large ensemble at a finite temperature. Our investigations show that the fidelity of the atomic system will not be good in the case of atom number N →∞. Therefore, quantum leakage is an inevitable problem in using the atomic ensemble as a quantum information memory. The detailed calculations shed theoretical light on quantum processing using atomic ensemble collective qubit.

Identity in a World of Scarcity： The Book of Eli

This paper examines the construction of identity in Hugue＇s brothers movie, The Book of Eli setting in an America post-apocalyptic world destroyed by nuclear war and environmental disasters. Economic relations in this world without time or history and without production of goods and commodities, are based on ancient practices such as barter. The goods are exchanged for goods according to the need and the currency lost its meaning before the supreme usefulness. Essential items to human life like water now have a very high value due to its complete scarcity. Eli （played by Denzel Washington） toured the United States for 30 years westward circling the wasteland leading the only existing copy of the King James version of the Bible. Then he reaches the town, which is under the control of Carnegie, the villain, whose ambition is to have the holy Bible in order to exercise power. In this world full of shortages, power belongs to the old that has the memory of the past. Texts of Giddens, Beck, Lash, Benveniste, and Marx compose the theoretical apparatus that allow understanding how to reconstruct the identity in a world in crisis, and no shortage of complete story without memory card with the movement of goods excluding currency.
