Transcendence of traditional melodrama A brief analysis on Lillian Hellman＇s The Little Foxes

Lillian Hellman is a leading figure in 20th century American theatre. Due to the intensity of feeling and the general theme of good vs. evil, her plays are tagged with ＂melodrama＂. However, by examining one of her masterpieces The Little Foxes, it is revealed that Lillian Hellman transcends the confmes of traditional melodrama by combining the complexity of real life into the pretense of representation, thus making her play forcefully believable.

The Dramatic Techniques in Hard Times

In this paper, a detailed study is made upon the dramatic techniques Dickens adopts andincorporates into his writing of Hard Times. The book is capable of dramatic readings from three differentperspectives: Hard times as a work of the ’stage’, as a tragedy and a melodrama. The study will befocusing on the ways in which Dickens incorporates the dramatic techniques into his fiction writing andhow that constitutes one of the great artistic achievements in Hard Times.

Southern Appalachian Woman Preachers and Their Sermons

This article inquires into how the maintenance of the residual practice of inspired preaching broadcast over the radio by Southern Appalachian Pentecostals, offers an accepted means by which women gain the power to articulate the conflicts, desires and contradictions of their culture. The democratic ethos of Pentecostalism declares that all people who feel the call to preach must be given that opportunity which opens a space of women＇s voices within the traditionally male ＂preacher culture.＂ Because radio lacks the visual component, and inspired preaching is deemed valid by its effect of the body, women may preach over the radio without the potential for sexual display that could arouse men visually. By examining the content and delivery of women＇s sermons using studies in melodrama, the article explores the nature and articulation of dramatic conflicts, points of difference, and especially issues of the body as lived by the women of southern Appalachia. Thereby, the article locates sites of resistance and conflicts with power both within and without the region. Using Gramcian notions of hegemony, negotiation and consent, it explores how a particular culture successfully elaborates itself through language and how Appalachian women critique their culture without risk of dramatic change.

在中西电影文化发展史上，不少电影艺术家往往采用情节剧的叙事模式，强化电影的观赏性、娱乐性特征，以获得观众的认同；在中西情节剧电影的各自演变过程中，由于文化背景的差异，呈现出偏重社会伦理与偏重娱乐消遣的不同文化取向；受现代西方哲学、艺术观念及电影思潮的影响和冲击，创作者不断地吸收其它有益的思想观念和电影手法，不断调整和突破其创作模式，使情节剧的文化意味愈显深厚，艺术魅力经久不衰。

戏剧艺术家袁牧之“由戏及影”后，其先锋性的视听实验使其电影不仅具有在都市各处随时随地建构抵抗性情境的强大能量，还实现了对都市现代性表现形式之一的“通俗剧”模式之辩证式超越。袁牧之身处的电通影片公司的民族电影工业背景与左翼倾向、上海都市文化中多重现代性之间富有张力的博弈关系、其先锋艺术家身份及新兴电影自身政治与美学上的双重暧昧，共同构成袁牧之新兴“通俗剧”电影的抵抗性、先锋性与暧昧性。
