Background and Objectives: Adverse environmental factors of tunnel increase the occurrence of respiratory and intestinal inflammatory disease, which is seriously harmful to workers health. Many studies have reported that mediumchain triglycerides(MCT) can improve immune status and alter the gut microflora. This study aims to investigate the effect of MCT on the immune status and gut microbiota of tunnel workers. Methods Methods and Study Design: Forty-five subjects were randomly divided into the MCT group(n=30) and control group(n=15), where they orally administered an MCT-milk or a placebo milk for 12 weeks, respectively. The primary outcome was the incidence of respiratory infections and diarrhea. Secondary outcomes were the changes in immune-related markers in serum and the changes in gut microbiota. Results Results: The incidence of diarrhea in MCT group was significantly decreased after 4 weeks intervention(p <0.01), while there were no significant changes in control group. MCT reduced the level of pro-inflammatory cytokines(TNF-α, CRP, and IL-6) and enhanced the anti-inflammatory cytokine(IL-10, C3, C4, IgA, IgG, and IgM), respectively(p <0.01). Chao index reduced(p <0.01) as well as microbiota composition changed significantly after 12 weeks MCT intervention. MCT significantly reduced the abundance of Bacteroides, Roseburia, Ruminococcus, Lachnospira and significantly increased that of Blautia and Fusicatenibacter at the genus level, respectively(p <0.01). Conclusion Conclusions: Our findings indicated that consumption of MCT reduced the diarrhea occurs, improved the serum immune profiles and gut microbiota in tunnel workers, which suggests that MCT may improve the immune status of tunnel workers by regulating gut microbiota.

Coconut oil:what do we really know about it so far?

In recent years,coconut oil has emerged as a potential‘miracle’*** media vehicles and health specialists assure that this fat is capable of promoting health benefits,such as weight reduction,cholesterol lowering,prevention of cardiovascular diseases,and anti-inflammatory effect,among *** claims are used to market the product and boost its sales by coconut oil ***,governmental regulatory agencies in many countries are still sceptical about the benefits obtained by the consumption of coconut oil due to its high-saturated fatty acid *** light of such controversy,this review focused on analysing the published literature on the alleged health claims,in order to investigate if there is enough scientific evidence to support *** was verified that the metabolism of lauric acid,the major fatty acid in coconut oil,remains *** studies reported that the product was not efficient in weight ***,it has been reported that the consumption of coconut oil increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol,consequently increasing the risk of cardiovascular *** general,the studies present conflicting results and there is a lack of long-term human-based clinical ***,as a saturated fat,coconut oil should be consumed with moderation and the health allegations should not be used to market the product,once they are not scientifically proven so far.
