Physical and mental health conditions of young college students with different Traditional Chinese medicine constitutions in Zhejiang Province of China

OBJECTIVE: To investigate Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) constitutions of youths in colleges,and their physical and mental health conditions of different TCM constitutions, so as to provide a theoretical basis for the TCM way to improve young people's physical and mental health.METHODS: The Standard TCM Constitutions' Classification and Determination Questionnaire was used to measure the body health condition, and the Symptom Checklist 90 Questionnaire and the Questionnaire of the National Student Physical Health Standards were used to determine mental and physical health conditions respectively in 1421 young participants validly answering the questionnaires in Zhejiang Province.RESULTS: The participants had a mean age of 19.96years(SD = 0.95 years) with the majority of females(55.10%). One fourth of the 1421 participants were the Ping-he constitution and others were the tendency constitutions. Participants with Ping-he module(which has characteristics of moderate posture,rosy, energetic and is a healthy condition in TCM)were healthier than those with tendency constitutions in physical and mental health, with 65.81 ±7.83(men) and 77.99 ± 7.24(women) scores in the physical test and around 1.25 scores in the mental health test. College students with combined biased constitutions were more likely suffer force, sensitive, depression and anxiety.CONCLUSION: Most of college students have a tendency or biased constitution which could be more likely to suffer suboptimal health status and diseases. Youths in college themselves and health providers should pay more attention to their potential health issues and make proper healthcare plan according to their own TCM constitution.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety in patients with chronic heart failure(CHF) of Western medication plus Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) preparations.METHODS: This prospective, single-blind, randomized, controlled, and multicenter clinical trial began on September 17, 2008, and was completed on June 25, 2011. A total of 340 inpatients, aged 40-79 years, with exacerbating CHF from 10 hospitals were enrolled and randomly allocated within 24 h of admission. The trial included three intervention periods. During hospitalization, the control group received western medication for CHF and the treatment group received Danhong injection with Shenfu injection or Shenmai injection. After discharge,all patients were treated with Qiliqiangxin capsules and Buyiqiangxin tablets or a placebo for 6 months. After the 6-month intervention, both groups received only continuous western medication. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality.The efficacy assessments were as follows: B-type natriuretic peptide(BNP), Lee's HF score, the 6-minute walking test(6 MWT), left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF), and the Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire(MLHFQ). The safety assessments were as follows: blood and urine routine examination, hepatic and renal function, electrolytes in blood and adverse events.RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the treatment group showed a 30.99% reduction in all-cause mortality and an improved survival rate.The treatment group showed greater improvement in 6 MWT(P = 0.02) than the control group on discharge, after 12-month follow-up, there was a time-group interaction for MLHFQ(P = 0.03). Incidence rate of adverse events and other relevant safety indexes were not statistically significant between the two groups.CONCLUSION: Western medication plus TCM treatment can increase 6-minute walking distance(improve exercise tolerance) and quality of life with heart failure patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy and safety of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy combined with ultraviolet B light therapy in the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. METHODS: Patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis (skin lesion area > 10% of the body surface area) for 2 consecutive years were treated with TCM (oral and external use of herbal medicines, acupuncture, and herbal bathing) and narrow-band medium-wave ultraviolet B light treatment for 12 weeks. The treatment effect was evaluated based on the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI), the achievement of a 50% reduction in the PASI (PASI50), the achievement of a 75% reduction in the PASI (PASI75), pruritus score, Dermatology Life Quality Index, and safety. RESULTS: A total of 95 outpatients were enrolled, and 92 subjects (96.8%) completed the 12-week treatment course. At baseline, the average proportion of the body surface area covered by skin lesions was 12.4%, and the average PASI was 17.7. All patients had previously been treated with conventional medicine (89.1% of patients received ultraviolet light treatment, 50.0% received glucocorticoids, and 21.7% received acitretin). After the 12-week treatment course, 22 patients (23.9%) achieved PASI75, and 43 (46.7%) achieved PASI50. The post-treatment pruritus score and Dermatology Life Quality Index of all treated patients were significantly lower than the respective baseline values (P < 0.0001). No adverse effects were detected by the monitoring of blood, urine, stools, liver and kidney function, and echocardiography.CONCLUSION: Comprehensive therapy comprising TCM therapy combined with ultraviolet B light therapy achieved good outcomes for patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic kidney disease(DKD) is one of the most common microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus and is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease. DKD seriously affects the quality of life of patients and brings heavy economic burden to the country. At present, the pathogenesis of DKD is not entirely clear, and clinical treatment is mainly to control blood glucose and lower blood pressure and urine protein. However,the clinical effect is not satisfactory.CASE PRESENTATION: A female patient, aged 72 years, first visited our hospital endocrinology clinic,and was diagnosed with DKD. She suffered from fatigue, cold sensation in the lower extremities, convulsion of the lower limbs and frequent urination at night. She had a dark purple tongue with white and yellow fur and sublingual varices. Accessory examinations showed that her fasting blood glucose was 5.7 mmol/L, serum creatinine 159 μmol/L,blood urea nitrogen 13.6 μmol/L, blood uric acid493 μmol/L, and blood pressure 138/65 mm Hg.The patient received Traditional Chinese medicine treatment of the modified Shenzhuo formula[Huangqi(Radix Astragali Mongolici), Dahuang(Radix Et Rhizoma Rhei Palmati), Shuizhi(Hirudo) and Danshen(Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae)] for 7 years and achieved good results.CONCLUSION: This case provides a specific treatment plan and an effective reference for clinical application of Traditional Chinese medicine for treating DKD. This may be an alternative treatment for DKD.

The human exploration of space is one of the great voyages of discovery in human history. For over forty years space exploration, human have gotten more profound knowledge about outer space and life phenomena, ranging from understanding and recognizing space to adapting and utilizing space. With these development, space medicine that aimed at studying effect of space environment on human health and ensuring the safety, health and effective working of human in space exploration, will become increasingly improved and matured.The contents of research will develop from the early phenomena observation of the effect of space environment on human physiology and biochemistry, and the effect definition, to the study of the mechanism of changes of cell, molecule, and gene, from the passive adaptation for space environment to taking the initiative countermeasures, in order to ensure the safety, health and effective working of astronauts during space flight.Space practices in the past forty years have confirmed that a variety of physiological and pathological changes have been found for organism exposed to space flight. These changes include cardiovascular dysfunction, bone loss,muscle atrophy, decline of immune function, endocrine function disorder and space motion sickness. In recent years, more attention has been focused on the study of the mechanism of these changes, especially the effects of space environment on cell, molecule and its gene expression. With the demand of China's manned space engineering task and continuous development, a series of studies on medical problem caused by space environment have been carried out.

Selective adsorption of tannins onto hide collagen fibres

Hide collagen of animals is used to prepare adsorbent material and its adsorption properties to tannins are investigated. It is indicated that the collagen fibres has excellent adsorption selectivity and high adsorption capacity to tannins. The adsorption rate of tannins is more than 90% whilst less than 10% of functional components are retained by the adsorbent. The adsorption mechanism of tannins onto hide collagen fibres is hydrogen-bonding association. Freundlich model can be used to describe the adsorption isotherms, and the pseudo-second-order rate model can be used to describe adsorption kinetics.

Safety and effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicinal herbs for diabetic foot:a systematic review and Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs(TCMHs) as an adjunctive treatment for diabetic foot(DF).METHODS: The sources used were Pub Med(1966 to August 2015), the Cochrane Library(1988 to August 2015), the Excerpta Medica Database(1974 to August 2015), Wiley(1807 to August 2015), Ovid(1988 to August 2015), Clinical Trials.gov(1993 to August 2015), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials(1966 to August 2015), China Science and Technology Journal Database(1994 to August2015), Chi CTR(2007 to August 2015), Sino Med(1978 to August 2015), the China National Knowledge Infrastructure(1984 to August 2015), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform(1998 to August 2015), and the Traditional Chinese Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System(TCMLARS)(1984 to August 2015). Studies were identified and selected, and the data were extracted by two independent reviewers. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool was used to assess the quality of studies. Revman 5.2 software was used for data synthesis and analysis.RESULTS: Sixteen studies were included based on the selection criteria. Of these, seven studies had low bias risk and one had high bias risk. In the overall analysis, TCMHs resulted in a significantly higher total effective rate(OR 5.08; 95% CI 3.50 to7.36; P 0.000 01), cure rate(OR 2.12; 95% CI1.63 to 2.77; P 0.000 01), and shorter time to ulcer healing(SMD-0.64; 95% CI-0.89 to-0.40;P 0.000 01) when compared with non-TCMHs treated DF. The analysis also revealed that significantly fewer amputations occurred in TCMHs patients(OR 0.36; 95% CI 0.20 to 0.65; P = 0.0007).Sensitivity analysis indicated that the findings of the Meta-analysis were robust to study quality,and the funnel plot of the Egger test showed no publication bias.CONCLUSION: TCMHs intervention appears to be more effective for DF, with a similar safety profile,when compared with non-TCMHs treatments, although this result requires further verification with more well-designed studies.

To promote the development of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), it is necessary to innovate the traditional prescription. It is feasible to use one or several components to substitute TCM, which can be regarded as a process of discarding the dregs and preserving the essential components. In this way, traditional prescription can be converted into various combinations of pharmacological ingredients deriving from several TCMs. Furthermore, some of pharmacological ingredients should be modified to increase their efficacy. It is practical to select the main structural unit with specific substituents having strong pharmacological activity. After the innovation mentioned above, the prescription will evolve into a variety of modified components having distinct pharmacological activity, and this is the novel integration of active ingredients.

Chinese scientists studied some of the problems in the field of space life science and achieved success in the area during 2000-2001. Space biological experi ments were carried out in the orbit and the results of ground studies on protein crystallization, space radiation, space motion sickness were introduced in this paper. The influences of simulated weightlessness on the brain-function, the car diovascular, endocrine hormones, immunity, skeletal and muscle systems were presented. In addition, gravity medicine and space environment medicine, as well as countermeasures to space deconditioning, such as the traditional Chinese medicine, were also reported.
