mass-balance ecosystem model of the East China Sea

Using the Ecopath mass-balance trophodynamic model,this paper analyzed the trophic levels,flows,food web structure and ecosystem maturity of the East China Sea,and identified ecologically important functional groups in the *** model is based on fishery resource surveys of the East China Sea in 2000,studies on diet composition and global databases such as FishBase and the Sea Around Us Project *** results showed that trophic levels of the functional groups are between 2.86 and 4.37,with an average of ***(Engraulis japonicus),small fishes and benthic crustaceans such as shrimps and crabs are important groups in terms of the trophic structure and flow dynamics in the East China *** flows of most groups are between specific trophic levels,except file fish(Thamnaconus spp.),pomfret(Pampus spp.) and *** transfer efficiency of levels Ⅱ,Ⅲ,IV and more than V are 11.8%,21.1%,17.4% and 22.1-22.5%,*** of fishery-the largest ‘consumer’ of the ecosystemare much stronger than those exerted by biological groups in the *** model suggests that the current fishery can further reduce the complexity of the *** of the system indices suggest that maturity of the ecosystem is *** conclusion of this model indicates that it was the overfishing that caused the ecosystem of the East China Sea declined,which should be taken into account as a critical reference for fisheries management in the future.

Due to global warming, glaciers on the Tibetan Plateau(TP) are experiencing widespread shrinkage; however, the mechanisms controlling glacier variations across the TP are still rather unclear, especially on the northeastern TP. In this study, a physically based, distributed surface-energy and mass-balance model was used to simulate glacier mass balance forced by meteorological data. The model was applied to Laohugou No. 12 Glacier, western Qilian Mountains, China, during2010~2012. The simulated albedo and mass balance were validated and calibrated by in situ measurements. The simulated annual glacier-wide mass balances were-385 mm water equivalent(w.e.) in 2010/2011 and-232 mm w.e. in 2011/2012,respectively. The mean equilibrium-line altitude(ELA) was 5,015 m a.s.l., during 2010~2012, which ascended by 215 m compared to that in the 1970 s. The mean accumulation area ratio(AAR) was 39% during the two years. Climatic-sensitivity experiments indicated that the change of glacier mass balance resulting from a 1.5 °C increase in air temperature could be offset by a 30% increase in annual precipitation. The glacier mass balance varied linearly with precipitation, at a rate of130 mm w.e. per 10% change in total precipitation.

Glacier mass-balance Variation in China during the Past Half Century

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of temperature trend on glacier-mass balance, snow density, snowmelt, snow depth and runoff by using observations of nine glacier stations that covered most of the China over the period of 1979-2013. Trend analysis showed an increasing trend of temperature on all of the selected stations. On an average, temperature was increasing at the rate of 0.46/10a. The increasing trend of temperature showed a negative relationship with annual glacier-mass balance on most of the stations and caused a decrease in annual balance. Results of Pearson’s correlation analysis showed a highly significant negative correlation between temperature and snow density (correlation coefficient (CC = -0.661 at 0.01 significance level). There was a significant positive correlation between temperature and snowmelt (CC = 0.532 at 0.01 significance level). There was a significant negative correlation between temperature and snow depth (correlation coefficient (CC = -0.342 at 0.05 significance level). Moreover, there was a significant positive correlation between temperature and runoff (CC = 0.586 at 0.01 significance level). Increasing trend of temperature caused an increasing trend of annual snowmelt and runoff anomaly% at the rate of 24.82/10a and 9.87/10a, respectively. On the other hand, a declining trend in annual snow density and snow depth anomaly% was found at a rate of -5.32/10a and -1.93/10a, respectively. We concluded that the snow density, snowmelt and runoff are significantly sensitive to temperature in China. This contribution has provided information for further understanding of glacier variation and its influencing factors.

Uncertainties in the Mercury mass balance in a Coal-Based IGCC Power Plant (Puertollano, Spain)

Mercury(Hg)is a global pollutant that is subject to strict regulations to reduce anthropogenic *** production of energy represents an important activity that leads to Hg emissions into the *** all the systems used,IGCC plants are the most promising for reducing Hg emissions,since it is possible to remove Hg from syngas prior to *** aim of the present work was to evaluate the presence of Hg in the main streams of an experimental IGCC plant(ELCOGAS,Puertollano)in order to quantify Hg emissions and investigate the possibility of reducing *** main streams of the system were sampled for three consecutive days and both the solids,i.e.,raw material(coal and petroleum coke),fine and coarse slags,fly ash,sulphur,and the liquids,i.e.,slag system,Venturi scrubber and saturator,were *** results show that an average of 12.9%of the Hg that enters the IGCC power plant is eliminated with solid waste and only 0.08%with liquid *** is still an average of 87.12%of Hg that is not accounted for in the mass balance and that could remain in the system and/or be eliminated in the streams that were not *** it is impossible to offer an explanation for the final fate of the Hg lost in the system based on the obtained results,the data suggest that sulphur byproducts could be primarily responsible for the elimination of Hg from the syngas,and that a major proportion of Hg should be emitted via the chimney after the syngas combustion process.

Influence of Sulphur Fertilizer on Sulphur Cycling and Its Implications on Sulphur Fertilizer Requirement of Grazed Pasture in Warm Seasonal Rangeland of Nei Monggol Steppe of China

Sulphur (S) cycling and implications on S fertilizer requirement in sheep-grazed pastures receiving three levels of S fertilizer at rates of 0, 30 and 60 kg S/hm 2 in 1995 and 1996 were studied using a mass-balance approach which accounted both for S inputs to and outputs from the soil-plant-animal system. Results indicated that S fertilizer increased by 50% of herbage S uptake and 15% or more of S bio-cycling rate in grazing system. The total S recovery of 30 and 60 kg S/hm 2 treatments from 1995 to 1996 was 74.0% and 37.6% respectively. Mineralization of organic S may be an important source of S for pasture when other S sources are low, accounted for 70% of the total S inputs without S fertilizer. The grazing sheep has an important ecological function, the feature of S cycling in grazed pastures was that 90% of herbage S ingested by grazing sheep was returned to soils as excreta. The amount of S released by sheep excreta accounted about 30% of the total released S through S bio-recycling. Loss from soil S leaching beyond the major plant rooting zone was the main S output from grazing system. However, urinary and fecal S losses, including transfer and leaching losses, also affected S budgets of grazing system. It is therefore important to investigate the recycling rate of both urinary and fecal S under field conditions. Based on the mass-balance principle, at least 10 kg S/hm 2 per year may be necessary for sustainable development of grazing system.
