Composition and origin of lipid biomarkers in the surface sediments from the southern Challenger Deep, mariana Trench

The surface sediments collected from the southern mariana Trench at water depths between ca.4900 m and 7068 m were studied using lipid biomarker analyses to reveal the origin and distribution of organic matters. For all samples, an unresolved complex mixture(UCM) was present in the hydrocarbon fractions, wherein resistant component tricyclic terpanes were detected but C_(27)-C _(29) regular steranes and hopanes indicative of a higher molecular weight range of petroleum were almost *** biomarker distribution patterns suggested that the UCM and tricyclic terpanes may be introduced by contamination of diesel fuels or shipping activities and oil seepage elsewhere. The well-developed faults and strike-slip faults in the mariana subduction zone may serve as passages for the petroleum hydrocarbons. In addition, the relative high contents of even n-alkanes and low Carbon Preference Indices indicated that the n-alkanes were mainly derived from bacteria or algae. For GDGTs, the predominance of GDGT-0 and crenarchaeol, together with low GDGT-0/Crenarchaeol ratios(ranging from0.86 to 1.64), suggests that the GDGTs in samples from the southern mariana Trench were mainly derived from planktic Thaumarchaeota. However, the high GDGT-0/crenarchaeol ratio(10.5) in sample BC07 suggests that the GDGTs probably were introduced by methanogens in a more anoxic environment. Furthermore, the n-alkanes C_(19)-C_(22) and the n-fatty acids C_(20:0)-C_(22:0) were depleted in^(13)C by 3‰ compared to n-alkanes C_(16)-C_(18) and the n-fatty acids C_(14:0)-C_(18:0), respectively, which was interpreted to result from the preferential reaction of fatty acid fragments with carbon "lighter" terminal carboxyl groups during carbon chain elongation from the precursors to products. Microbial diversity in the sediments of the southern mariana Trench

Microbial diversity in the abyssal sediments beneath the seafloor of 30,94,and 151cm near the southern end of the mariana Trench was analyzed in the Illumina HiSeq 2500 *** show that the microbial populations were dominated by bacteria but merely no archaea were identifi ed at the three *** the bacterial community,Proteobacteria and Firmicutes dominated the total taxon tags,followed by Bacteroidetes,Actinobacteria,Planctomycetes,Cyanobacteria,and Chloroflexi,which together account for over 99%of the total *** to that in the seawater in the trench,the operational taxonomic units(OTUs)belonging to Gammaproteobacteria from the sediment samples showed high ***,common bacterial OTUs in the water of the trench including Nitrospirae and Marinimicrobia were hardly found in the sediments from the southern mariana Trench or the hadal ***,this study documented for the first time the compositions of microbial diversity in the trench sediments,revealed the difference in microbial diversity in water and sediment of the trench and will enrich the knowledge on the microbial diversity in the abyssal areas.

Metasomatism of the peridotites from southern mariana fore-arc:Trace element characteristics of clinopyroxene and amphibole

Modal composition and mineral composition of harzburgites from the southern mariana fore-arc show that they are highly refractory. There are a few modals of clinopyroxene (0.7 vol %) in harzburgites. Two types of amphibole are found in these harzburgites: magnesiohornblende accompanied by clinopy-roxene with higher Al2O3 content (>7%) and lower Mg#; tremolite around orthopyroxene with lower Al2O3 content (mariana fore-arc harzburgites underwent two stages of metasomatism. The percolation of a hydrous melt led to mobility of Al,Ca,Fe,Mg,Na,and large amounts of trace element. LILE and LREE can be more active in hydrous melt than HREE and Ti,and the activities of most of the trace element except some of LILE are influ-enced by temperature and pressure.

Talc-bearing serpentinized peridotites from the southern mariana forearc:implications for aseismic character within subduction zones

The serpentinized peridotites overlying the subducted zones in the Izu-Bonin-mariana(IBM) arc system have been interpret as the cause of the low-velocity layer identified beneath the IBM froearc,in turn few earthquakes occurred along the plate ***,which is a low temperature and highly hydrated phase of serpentine with low frictional strength,has been suggested as the low velocity material in the serpentinized peridotites,besides,brucite is inferred to be likely conducive to stable ***,such idea encounters challenging in our serpentinized peridotites from the southern mariana forearc,which absent both the above *** presence of talc,which characterized by its weak,low-friction and inherently stable sliding behavior,provides new *** we report the occurrence of talc in serpentinized peridotites collected from the landward trench slope of the southern mariana *** infer that talc is mainly forming as a result of the reaction of serpentine minerals with silica-saturated fluids released from the subducting slab,and talc also occurs as talc veins *** to its unique physical properties,talc may therefore play a significant role in aseismic slip in the IBM subduction zone.

Peridotites from the southern mariana forearc were sampled on the landward trench slope of the Izu-Bonin-mariana (IBM) subduction zone by *** mantle wedge peridotites underwent hydration by fluid derived from a dehydrated descending slab,and later interacted with seawater after emplacement at or near the *** study investigates how these two different rock-fluid interaction processes influenced trace element distribution in the southern mariana forearc *** measured trace element concentrations of peridotites from the southern mariana *** southern mariana forearc peridotites are characterized by a distinct seawater-like REE pattern with an obvious negative Ce anomaly,and La shows good correlation with other REEs (except Ce).In addition,there is a great enrichment of U,Pb,Sr and Li elements,which show a distinct positive anomaly relative to adjacent elements in the multi-element *** the seawater-like REE pattern,we infer that REEs are mainly influenced by seawater during peridotite-seawater interactions after their emplacement at or near the seafloor,by serpentinization or by marine ***,the anomalous behavior of Ce,compared with other rare earth elements in these samples,may indicate that they have undergone reactions involving Ce (IV) when the peridotites interacted with *** U,Pb,Sr and Li anomalies are inferred to be related to seawater and/or fluids released during dehydration of the subducting slab.

A detailed petrologic and mineralogic study was carried out on serpentinized peridotites dredged from the southern landward slopes of the mariana Trench,in order to reveal the serpentinization process of these unusual rocks and to identify the sole presence of the mineral *** constituent minerals of these southern mariana forearc peridotites are olivine,amphibole and spinel,as well as serpentine,chlorite and *** with serpentinite seamounts,the serpentinized peridotites from the southern mariana forearc are characterized by the absence of magnetite and brucite,and the common presence of talc;besides,the serpentine mineral variety is simplex,only *** mineral chemistry and mineral phase relationships,we conclude that(1) the absence of magnetite in the serpentinized peridotites is due to incomplete serpentinization,other than magnetite,the iron end-member in olivine forms Ferich brucite and Fe-rich serpentine;(2) brucite is not stable with high silica activity,reacting with later SiO2-rich fluid and then forming lizardite,leading to a lack of brucite in these serpentinized peridotites;(3) the occurrence of talc is the result of later SiO2-rich fluid reactions with lizardite;and(4) the reason for the sole occurrence of lizardite is that the temperature condition of our study are awas nothig henough for the formation of antigorite(whichisstable at >500 °C).Despite the broad overlap of lizardite and chrysotile in growth temperature,differences in the modes of occurrence of lizardite and chrysotile,such as the scarcity of H2O,low porosity and permeability,as well as the actual situation of initial serpentinization in the study area,result in the absolute prevalence of lizardite over chrysotile in the area.

The submarine hydrothermal activity, its occurrence, the minerals and the chemical features of the hydrothermal sulfides in the mariana Trough are described. The mineral phases and their existing forms of the hydrothermal products formed at high temperature and intermediate-low temperature are discussed. It has been considered that the hydrothermal activity in the mariana Trough isa small-scale one, different from those on the mid-ocean ridges and in the deep fracture zones.
