Types of maize virus diseases and Progress in virus Identification Techniques in China

There are a total of more than 40 reported maize viral diseases worldwide. Five of them have reportedly occurred in China. They are maize rough dwarf disease, maize dwarf mosaic disease, maize streak dwarf disease, maize crimson leaf disease, maize wallaby ear disease and corn lethal necrosis disease. This paper reviewed their occurrence and distribution as well as virus identification techniques in order to provide a basis for virus identification and diagnosis in corn production.

A Survey on Epidemics of Viral Disease on Maize Plants

In recent years,viral diseases occured more and more seriously on maize plants in Lin’an city, especially,the viral diseases were very prevalent and caused a great of losses of corn yield in *** order to explore the epidemics of diseases and to provide the scientific guidance for prevention and control,we investigated the occurrence and prevalence of the viral disease on maize plants during 2007～*** results indicated that maize rough dwarf disease was main viral disease on maize plant in the city and had some epidemic characteristics as following:①the disease occurred in large area and caused significant yield *** of diseased plants is up to 8000 mu in 2007,15000 mu in 2008,and 10000 mu in 2009 and 2010,respectively(nearly 1/3～1/2 of total area of maize plants in the city).The incidence of diseased plant was 10%～30%in most of fields and more than 50%in some seriously diseased fields.②The population density of SBPH was very high,which was contributed to viral spread and formed a big threat to corn *** late May to early June,2008～2010,the population density of SBPH on weed fields was up to 10.6 SBPH / m2,8.7 SBPH/m,6.5 SBPH/m,respectively. The population density of SBPH on wheat fields was up to 453000 SBPH/mu,287000 SBPH/mu,205000 SBPH/mu,*** overgrew in the fields and there was a variety of host plants for *** addition,rice black-streaked dwarf disease seriously occurred on single-season late rice plants in some villages and towns,which contributed to the accumulation and transmission of viruses and thus formed a great threat to corn production.③The disease occurred on many cultivars of maize plants,including all main maize *** cultivars,on which disease incidence was more than 10%during 2008～2009,included,Jidan 94-2 and Suyu ***,on which disease incidence was 5%～10%,included Dushiliren,Jundan 20,and Jundan ***,on which disease incidence was 2%～5%,included Dushiliren,Cuitiannuo 6,Suyunuo
