Novel magneto-rheological fluid damper for passive force/torque feedback

The damper is capable of providing a continuously variable dampering force/torque in response to a magnetic field. It consists of an upside cap and an underside cap with a rotor located between them, the magneto-rheological （MR） fluid is filled into the gaps between the rotor and the caps. When the viscosity of the MR fluid increases under the influence of the magnetic field, the movement of the rotor will be resisted. The output torque is made up of the torque caused by the magnetic field, the torque caused by the plastic viscosity of the MR fluid, and the torque caused by the coulomb friction. The viscous torque can be calculated by a simple method and the frictional torque can be obtained by experiments. The torque dependent on the magnetic field is obtained by electromagnetic finite dement analysis. Experiments are done on the damper prototype and the validity of the design is verified.

＜正＞ The magneto-rheological （MR） response, like the better studied electro-rheological （ER） response, refers to the rapid and reversible viscosity increase seen in certain types of suspensions. This paper reports on the development of a 3D numerical simulation which is able to model the microstructural evolution of MR suspensions including hydrodynamic inter-particle interactions. The current method is essentially a reduced version of the Stokesian Dynamics （SD） method [1] with modifications to model the MR response. MR particles are modeled as rigid magnetizable spheres suspended in a Newtonian fluid. The Rotne-Prager Yamakawa tensor is used in the construction of the resistance matrix. Wall hydrodynamics are included with a formulation for sphere-wall interactions. MR forces are incorporated using superimposed sphere-pair dipole interaction forces. In simulations, particle cluster formations are observed, and the rheological response due to these formations are examined. Some basic flow scenarios are studied, including periodic infinite shear flow under a constant magnetic field. MR suspensions are prone to suffer from sedimentation when unused. Their response may therefore be sluggish after an extended period of rest. We apply the simulation to the case of the re-suspension of sedimented suspensions （both normal and MR）.

A disc-type magneto-rheological fluid damper operating in shear mod e is proposed in this paper,which is based on the special characteristics of the magneto-rheological (MR) fluid with rapid,reversible and dramatic change in it s rheological properties by the application of an external magnetic field. The ma gnetic field of the disc-type MR fluid damper is analysed by the finite element method; the controllability of the disc-type MR fluid damper on the dynamic beh a viour of a rotor system; and the effectiveness of the disc-type MR fluid damper in controlling the vibration of a rotor system,are studied in a flexible rotor system with an over-hung disc. It is shown that the magnetic flux density of th e disc-type MR fluid damper in the working areas can significantly change with t h e applied current in the coil; and that the dynamic behavior of the disc-type M R fluid damper can be varied by the application of an external magnetic field pr oduced by a low voltage electromagnetic coil. The disc-type MR fluid damper can significantly change the dynamic characteristics of a rotor system,provided tha t the location of the disk-type MR fluid damper is carefully chosen. The disc- ty pe MR fluid damper is a new actuator with good dynamic characteristics for rotat ing machinery.

The paper presents a novel configuration in order to improve the compactness and manufacturing cost of magneto-rheological material(or fluid)based brakes(MRB in short).In conventional configurations of MRBs,the coil is normally wound on a nonmagnetic bobbin which is placed on the *** causes difficulties in manufacturing of the brake and the bottle-neck problem of magnetic *** the proposed configuration,the coil is wound directly on the inner cylinder of the *** this case,the inner cylinder of the housing should be designed in a special shape that maximizes the magnetic flux across the MR fluid(MRF)*** proposing of the new configuration of the MRBs,the modeling of the MRBs is performed based on Bingham rheological model of the *** optimal design of the proposed MRBs and conventional MRBs is then performed based on finite element analysis results of magnetic circuit of the MRBs.A comparative work between the optimal parameters of the proposed MRBs and conventional MRBs is conducted and the advanced performance characteristics of the proposed MRBs are investigated.
