Faraday effect measurements of holmium oxide(Ho_2O_3) ceramics-based magneto-optical materials, highly potential material candidates for high-energy laser Faraday isolators, are presented in this paper. Temperature dependence of the Verdet constant of nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceramics was measured for temperatures 15–305 K at 1.064 μm wavelength.The Verdet constant dispersion for wavelengths 0.5–1 μm and 1.064 μm was measured for both nondoped Ho_2O_3 ceramics and Ho_2O_3 ceramics doped with terbium Tb3+(0.2 at. %) and cerium Ce3+(0.1 at. %) ions. The results suggest that the relatively low level of doping of Ho_2O_3 with these ions has no significant boosting impact on the Faraday effect. Therefore, other compositions of Ho_2O_3 ceramics-based magneto-optical materials, as well as various doping concentrations, should be further examined.

Co double layer film （CoDLF） consisting of a disk-array layer and an antidot-array layer, both with square order, was investigated. Both the reflectivity and Kerr spectra of CoDLF show anisotropic effects when the azimuthal angle of incident light changes. From the simulation result of surface plasmon polaritons （SPPs）, we attribute the reflectivity minima and Kerr angle maxima in the spectra mainly to the excitation of different diffractional orders＇ SPPs. More interestingly, the Kerr angle changes sign at specific wavelengths. We attribute these phenomena to the excitation of SPPs and localized surface plasmons （LSPs）, and the interaction between them.

We demonstrate an all-optical strategy for realizing spherical three-dimensional(3D)super-resolution(∼λ3/22)spot arrays of pure longitudinal magnetization by exploiting a 4πoptical microscopic setup with two high numerical aperture(NA)objective lenses,which focus and interfere two modulated vectorial beams.Multiple phase filters(MPFs)are designed via an analytical approach derived from the vectorial Debye diffraction theory to modulate the two circularly polarized beams.The system is tailored to constructively interfere the longitudinal magnetization components,while simultaneously destructively interfering the azimuthal ones.As a result,the magnetization field is not only purely longitudinal but also super-resolved in all three dimensions.Furthermore,the MPFs can be designed analytically to control the number and locations of the super-resolved magnetization spots to produce both uniform and nonuniform arrays in a 3D volume.Thus,an all-optical control of all the properties of light-induced magnetization spot arrays has been demonstrated for the first time.These results open up broad applications in magnetic-optical devices such as confocal and multifocal magnetic resonance microscopy,3D ultrahigh-density magneto-optic memory,and light-induced magneto-lithography.

Controlling the phase of light in magnetoplasmonic structures is receiving increasing attention because of its already shown capability in ultrasensitive and label-free molecular-level detection.magneto-optical Kerr reversal has been achieved and well explained in nanodisks by using the phase of localized plasmons.In this paper,we report that the Kerr reversal can also be produced by surface plasmon polaritons independently.We experimentally confirm this in Co and Ag/Co/Ag metal nanogratings,and can give a qualitative explanation that it is the charge accumulation at the interface between the grating surface and air that acts as the electromagnetic restoring force to contribute necessary additional phase for Kerr reversal.Our finding can enrich the means of designing and fabricating magneto-optical-based biochemical sensors.

We experimentally demonstrate an ultra-thin plasmonic optical rotator in the visible regime that induces a polarization rotation that is continuously tunable and switchable by an external magnetic field.The rotator is a magneto-plasmonic hybrid structure consisting of a magneto-optical EuSe slab and a one-dimensional plasmonic gold grating.At low temperatures,EuSe possesses a large Verdet constant and exhibits Faraday rotation,which does not saturate over a regime of several Tesla.By combining these properties with plasmonic Faraday rotation enhancement,a large tuning range of the polarization rotation of up to 8.4° for a film thickness of 220 nm is achieved.Furthermore,through experiments and simulations,we demonstrate that the unique dispersion properties of the structure enable us to tailor the wavelengths of the tunable polarization rotation to arbitrary spectral positions within the transparency window of the magneto-optical slab.The demonstrated concept might lead to important,highly integrated,non-reciprocal,photonic devices for light modulation,optical isolation,and magnetic field optical sensing.The simple fabrication of EuSe nanostructures by physical vapor deposition opens the way for many potentially interesting magneto-plasmonic systems and three-dimensional magneto-optical metamaterials.

On the Usage of the Faraday Effect as an Authentication Technique for Vegetable Oils

In this study we report on the measurements of the Verdet constant for olive and other vegetable oils. Study of samples stored for different periods at different storage conditions showed that each olive oil sample has a Verdet constant value depending on: production year, history of the sample (i.e. storage conditions) and geographical region. Photo and auto oxidations are found to have reverse effects on the value of the measured Verdet constant, on the one hand, photo-oxidation tends to decrease the Verdet constant, but on the other hand auto-oxidation tends to increase it. It is known that oils stored in room light had significantly lower tocopherol, carotenoid, and chlorophyll contents than did the same oils kept in the dark. For other vegetable oil samples, each vegetable oil was found to have a distinct Verdet constant value. Thus it is possible to differentiate vegetable oils making use of their respective Verdet constants. Preliminary results indicated the possibility to detect olive oil adulteration using the Faraday Effect, i.e. the effect could be suggested as a food authentication technique if calibration curves and standard Verdet constants values could be prepared for comparison with those of samples under investigation.

Recent interest in developing fast spintronic devices and laser-controllable magnetic solids has sparked tremendous experimental and theoretical efforts to understand and manipulate ultrafast dynamics in materials.Studies of spin dynamics in the terahertz(THz)frequency range are particularly important for elucidating microscopic pathways toward novel device functionalities.Here,we review THz phenomena related to spin dynamics in rare-earth orthoferrites,a class of materials promising for antiferromagnetic spintronics.We expand this topic into a description of four key elements.(1)We start by describing THz spectroscopy of spin excitations for probing magnetic phase transitions in thermal equilibrium.While acoustic magnons are useful indicators of spin reorientation transitions,electromagnons that arise from dynamic magnetoelectric couplings serve as a signature of inversion-symmetry-breaking phases at low temperatures.(2)We then review the strong laser driving scenario,where the system is excited far from equilibrium and thereby subject to modifications to the free-energy landscape.Microscopic pathways for ultrafast laser manipulation of magnetic order are discussed.(3)Furthermore,we review a variety of protocols to manipulate coherent THz magnons in time and space,which are useful capabilities for antiferromagnetic spintronic applications.(4)Finally,new insights into the connection between dynamic magnetic coupling in condensed matter and the Dicke superradiant phase transition in quantum optics are provided.By presenting a review on an array of THz spin phenomena occurring in a single class of materials,we hope to trigger interdisciplinary efforts that actively seek connections between subfields of spintronics,which will facilitate the invention of new protocols of active spin control and quantum phase engineering.

Common regularities in the biology evolution and the magnetization processes of magnetically ordered materials have been demonstrated. The arrays of the experimental data have been accumulated in the registration process of a weak polarization-optical response of borate iron at the presence of external magnetic field. It is shown that the magnetic behavior of response in some respects analogous to processes in biologically systems, such as differentiation, convergence, the development of clones, etc. It is predicted the existence of the weaving development that combines the characteristics of the processes of differentiation and convergence. More detail are considered the phenomenon nie the branch points;it is shown the possibility of the acceleration, retardation, and wavelike development. The proposed approach may be useful for comparison, the study and predict development scenarios for actual organized systems of various natures (ecological, social, financial, informative etc.), and high degree of hierarchical complexity.
