Fabrication and Characterization of Multi-layer Heat Mirror with Photocatalytic Properties

A novel TiO2（5）/TiO2（buffer）/Ti（4）/Ag（3）/Ti（2）/TiO2（1） multi-layer film coating with corning glass is designed and fabricated by a dc magnetron sputtering method as a renovation of the well-known TiO2/Ti/Ag/Ti/TiO2 system in order to obtain a heat mirror system with photocatalytic properties due to sufficient thickness of the Ti02 layer. The outer TiO2 layer is fabricated in two steps, possibly claimed as two layers TiO2（5） and TiO2（buuer）, among which TiO2（buffer） the 70-nm-thick layer deposited in poor oxygen effectively minimizes the oxidation toward its neighbor Ti（4） layer. The optimal total thickness of the TiO2（5） and TiO（buffer） di-layer is found to be 300nm to yield a highly photo-catalytic property of the film without affecting the optical properties considerably. This multi-layer film can transmit light of above 75-85% in the visible spectrum （380 ≤ λ≤ 760 nm） and reflect radiation of above 90% in the infrared spectrum （ λ≥760 nm）. Such multi-layer coatings are strongly recommended not only as promising transparent heat mirrors but also as photo-catalytic films for architectural window coatings.

Polycrystalline K2AgI3 is synthesized by solid-state reaction at 403K using AgI and KI as starting materials. X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence （PL） spectra, photoluminescenee excitation （PLE,） spectra, electron para- magnetic resonance （EPR） and absorption spectra are employed to investigate the structure and photo-physical properties of such material. A broad luminescence band centered at about 608nm at 180K with large Stokes shift is found. When the temperature rises to about 300K, an obvious PL blue-shift, PL intersity weakening, and an emission band broadening are observed. It is suggested that the emission at about 608 nm may originate from the recombination of self-trapped exeitons.

Spin-Flip Behaviour Observed in （Pt／Co）5／Ru／（Co／Pt）5 Films

(Pt/Co)5/Ru/(Co/Pt)5 films with different Ru thicknesses were prepared by magnetron sputtering. Oscillatory behaviour of effective perpendicular anisotropy and remanence in the (Pt/Co)5/Ru/(Co/Pt)5 films as a function of the thickness of Ru has been first observed, from which we can obtain the conclusion that the synthetic spin in the (Pt/Co)5/Ru/(Co/Pt)5 films rotates from the vertical direction to the in-plane one periodically with the change of the thickness of the spacer layer of Ru. The oscillatory period is about two atomic layers of Ru and different from the long and short oscillatory periods of the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling in Co/Ru/Co, Co/Cu/Co, and Fe/Cr/Fe, etc.

Numerical Calculation of Kerr Spectra for magnetic Granular Films

Based on the 4 * 4 matrix method, we present theoretical calculations of the magneto-optic polar Kerr effect with the incident energy in granular films. It is found that the simulated results are in good agreement with experimental ones. In addition, Kerr rotation and ellipticity as functions of incident angle and magnetic film thickness have been computed. The calculated results indicate that the Kerr spectra as a function of the incident angle reveal a maximum at certain incident angles and the Kerr spectra appear to be periodical and have damped oscillation as a function of the magnetic film thickness, which is important for the design of the materials in the future.

Fe-doped In2O3 films are grown epitaxially on YSZ （100） substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction, the atomic force microscopy, and the x-ray diffraction patterns show that the films have a well defined cubic structure epitaxially oriented in the （100） direction. Room temperature ferromagnetism is observed by an alternating gradient magnetometer. Strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with a remnant magnetization ratio of 0.83 and a coercivity of 2,5 kOe is revealed. Both the structural and the magnetic measurements suggest that this ferromagnetism is an intrinsic property deriving from the spin-orbit coupling between the diluted Fe atoms.

Giant Persistent Current in a Mesoscopic Ring with Parallel-Coupled Double Quantum Dots

We theoretically study the properties of the ground state of the parallel-coupled double quantum dots embedded in a mesoscopic ring in the Kondo regime by means of the two-impurity Anderson Hamiltonian. The Hamiltonian is solved by means of the slave-boson mean-field theory. Our results show that in this system, the persistent current depends sensitively on both the parity of this system and the size of the ring. Two dots can be coupled coherently, which is reflected in the giant current peak in the strong coupling regime. This system might be a candidate for future device applications.

With the help of a set of exact closed-form solutions to the stationary Gross Pitaevskii equation, we compre-hensively investigate Landau and dynamical instabilities of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a periodic array of quantum wells. In the tight-binding limit, the anaiyticai expressions for both Landau and dynamical instabilities are obtained in terms of the compressibility and effective mass of the BEC system. Then the stability phase diagrams are shown to be similar to the one in the case of the sinusoidal optical lattice.

Dependence of Structure and Haemocompatibility of Amorphous Carbon Films on Substrate Bias Voltage

Tetrahedral amorphous hydrogenated carbon (ta-C: H) films on Si(100) substrates were prepared by using a magnetic-field-filter plasma stream deposition system. Samples with different ratios of sp3-bond to sp2-bond were obtained by changing the bias voltage applied to the substrates. The ellipsometric spectra of various carbon films in the photon energy range of 1.9--5.4eV were measured. The refractive index n and the relative sp3 C ratio of these films were obtained by simulating their ellipsometric spectra using the Forouhi--Bloomer model and by using the Bruggeman effective medium approximation, respectively. The haemocompatibility of these ta-C: H films was analysed by observation of platelet adhesion and measurement of kinetic clotting time. The results show that the sp3 C fraction is dependent on the substrate bias voltage, and the haemocompatibility is dependent on the ratio of sp3-bond to sp2-bond. A good haemocompatibility material of ta-C: H films with a suitable sp3 C fraction can be prepared by changing the substrate bias voltage.

Electric Field Control of Interface Related Spin Splitting in Step Quantum Wells

Spin splitting of the Aly Ga1-y As/GaAs/A1x Ga1-x As/A1-y Ga1-y As （x ≠ y） step quantum wells （ Q Ws） has been theoretically investigated with a model that includes both the interface and the external electric field contribution. The overall spin splitting is mainly determined by the interface contribution, which can be well manipulated by the external electric field. In the absence of the electric field, the Rashba effect exists due to the internal structure inversion asymmetry （SIA）. The electric field can strengthen or suppress the internal SIA, resulting in an increase or decrease of the spin splitting. The step QW, which results in large spin splitting, has advantages in applications to spintronic devices compared with symmetrical and asymmetrical QWs. Due to the special structure design, the spin splitting does not change with the external electric field.
