Multiple Equilibria in a Land–Atmosphere Coupled System

Many low-order modeling studies indicate that there may be multiple equilibria in the atmosphere induced by thermal and topographic ***,most work uses uncoupled atmospheric model and just focuses on the multiple equilibria with distinct wave amplitude,i.e.,the high-and low-index ***,a low-order coupled land–atmosphere model is used to study the multiple equilibria with both distinct wave phase and wave *** model combines a two-layer quasi-geostrophic channel model and an energy balance *** truncated spectral expansions are used and the results show that there may be two stable equilibria with distinct wave phase relative to the topography:one(the other)has a lower layer streamfunction that is nearly in(out of)phase with the topography,i.e.,the lower layer ridges(troughs)are over the mountains,called ridge-type(trough-type)*** wave phase of equilibrium state depends on the direction of lower layer zonal wind and horizontal scale of the *** multiple wave phase equilibria associated with ridge-and trough-types originate from the orographic instability of the Hadley circulation,which is a pitch-fork *** with the uncoupled model,the land–atmosphere coupled system produces more stable atmospheric flow and more ridge-type equilibrium states,particularly,these effects are primarily attributed to the longwave radiation *** upper layer streamfunctions of both ridge-and trough-type equilibria are also characterized by either a high-or low-index flow ***,the multiple wave phase equilibria associated with ridge-and trough-types are more prominent than multiple wave amplitude equilibria associated with high-and low-index types in this study.

New observations from buoys and soundings reveal the discrepancies in air-sea interface and in vertical structures between spring(April to May) and summer(July) fogs in the Yellow *** fogs are shallow with a robust temperature inversion,dry layer and cold phase(surface air temperature or SAT is lower than sea surface temperature or SST);summer fogs are deep with weaker stability,indistinct fog top and warm phase(SAT>SST).Along with numerical simulations,conceptual models for the mechanisms of temperature inversion are *** land-sea contrast is responsible for the robust temperature inversion in spring,and the deep southerlies derived from the east Asian summer monsoon and the adiabatic sinking from the western Pacific subtropical high contributes to the weaker inversion in *** dry layer above the sea fog top intensifies the long-wave radiative cooling effect to lead to the cold phase in spring *** radiative cooling is weaker in summer fogs resulting in SAT>SST.

Satellitic observation and genetic analysis of clouds of a Bohai sea effect snowstorm

In this study,substantial satellitic remote sensing data and atmospheric observational data were used to study a snowfall caused by Bohai sea-effect snow cloud which occurred in Shandong Peninsula from 4 to 6,DEC *** study results show that the snow cloud emerged in the strong northwesterly cold flow in the middle-lower troposphere,the southwest of northeast cold vortex,and cyclonic bending on the surface *** the snowstorm cloud was shallow convective,its cold center was quite strong,the average snowfall rate was 0.41 mm/h during the exuberant period,and the snowfall rate was distributed in *** upwelling longwave fluxes on the cloud top were not only related to the temperature,but also related to the ice water content of the cloud,when we study the clouds effect on the radiation,we should consider the rainfall(snowfall)strength of the cloud.
