long-term changes in Summer Extreme Wet Bulb Globe Temperature over China

The wet bulb globe temperature(WBGT)has important implication for human *** studies widely use the monthly data but rarely investigate the extreme WBGT because of data *** this study,we use 6-h station data to analyze the changes in the WBGT and three categories(intensity,absolute threshold,and frequency indices)of extreme WBGT indices in summers of *** is found that the spatial distributions of long-term trends in summer mean WBGT are consistent with those in the mean *** trend value of WBGT is smaller than the mean temperature,because of the decrease of relative *** the extreme indices,the intensity and frequency of WBGT and fixed threshold indices have *** increase of intensity indices and warm WBGT days and nights,and decrease of cold WBGT days and nights have been observed in most China,especially over northwestern *** number of days with daily maximum WBGT exceeding 31.4℃(WXge31)and minimum WBGT exceeding 27.9℃(WNge27)over southeastern China have increased since *** spread of probability distributions of WXge31,WNge27,and warm WBGT days and nights is becoming wider,reflecting increased variability of extreme *** addition,urbanization effects on the WBGT are *** impacts of urbanization on most of extreme WBGT indices are not detected,except for absolute thresholds *** may be due to the decrease of relative humidity in urban stations,which are almost two times larger than that in rural ***,we also note that the homogenization issue of humidity data may affect the conclusions.

Climate change filtered out resource-acquisitive plants in a temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia,China

Global climate change has led to the decline of species and functional diversity in ecosystems,changing community composition and ecosystem ***,we still know little about how species with different resource-use strategies(different types of resource usage and plant growth of plants as indicated by the spectrum of plant economic traits,including acquisitive resource-use strategy and conservative resource-use strategy)would change in response to climate change,and how the changes in the diversity of species with different resource-use strategies may influence community-level ***,using long-term(1982–2017)observatory data in a temperate grassland in Inner Mongolia,we investigated how climate change had affected the species richness(SR)and functional richness(FRic)for the whole community and for species with different resource-use ***,based on data for four traits representing leaf economics spectrum(leaf carbon concentration,leaf nitrogen concentration,leaf phosphorus concentration,and specific leaf area),we divided 81 plant species appearing in the grassland community into three plant functional types representing resource-acquisitive,medium,and resource-conservative *** then analyzed the changes in community-level productivity in response to the decline of SR and FRic at the community level and for different resource-use *** found that community-level SR and FRic decreased with drying climate,which was largely driven by the decline of diversity for resource-acquisitive ***,community-level productivity remained stable because resource-conservative species dominating this grassland were barely affected by climate *** study revealed distinctive responses of species with different resource-use strategies to climate change and provided a new approach based on species functional traits for predicting the magnitude and direction of climate change effects on ecosystem functions.

Covariability of Subantarctic Mode Water and the Southern Branch of the Subtropical Indian Ocean Countercurrent in Argo Observations

The Subantarctic Mode Water(SAMW)forms in the deep mixed layer north of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and spreads northward into the subtropical *** subtropical South Indian Countercurrent(SICC)flows eastward on the north flank of the thick SAMW layer within 22°-32°S from south of Madagascar at around 25°S,50°E toward western *** dynamical relation of the SAMW and the southern branch of the SICC(30°-32°S)is investigated in this work based on the monthly mean Argo data from 2004 to *** physical properties of the SAMW and its pathway from the formation region are *** of the SAMW in the Indian Ocean sector originates from the deep mixed layers of the southeastern Indian Ocean(about 40°S,85°-105°E)and moves along the subtropical *** takes around ten years to arrive east of Madagascar Island preserving its low potential vor-ticity *** a thick layer with homogeneous vertical properties,the SAMW forces the upper pycnocline to shoal,and the associated eastward shear results in the surface-intensified *** SAMW forms a tongue-shaped thickness pattern,which influ-ences the southern branch of the SICC above the northern flank of the thickest SAMW layer between 24°S and 32°*** seasonal,interannual,and decade variations of the southern branch of the SICC are closely related to the meridional gradient of the underlying SAMW *** SAMW thickened and strengthened from 2005 to 2015,thereby anchoring a strengthened *** interan-nual covariability of the SAMW and SICC further supports the SAMW’s role in driving SICC variability.

Relationship between Indian and East Asian Summer Rainfall Variations

The Indian and East Asian summer monsoons are two components of the whole Asian summer monsoon system. Previous studies have indicated in-phase and out-of-phase variations between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall. The present study reviews the current understanding of the connection between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall. The review covers the relationship of northern China, southern Japan, and South Korean summer rainfall with Indian summer rainfall; the atmospheric circulation anomalies connecting Indian and East Asian summer rainfall variations; the long-term change in the connection between Indian and northern China rainfall and the plausible reasons for the change; and the influence of ENSO on the relationship between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall and its change. While much progress has been made about the relationship between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall variations, there are several remaining issues that need investigation. These include the processes involved in the connection between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall, the non-stationarity of the connection and the plausible reasons, the influences of ENSO on the relationship, the performance of climate models in simulating the relationship between Indian and East Asian summer rainfall, and the relationship between Indian and East Asian rainfall intraseasonal fluctuations.

Intruduction:We assessed recent trends in children's connection with nature over the period of 2000-2015,using indices of wildlife awareness that focus on changes in wildlife abundance and the level of apathy among *** used data from a survey conducted in 63 junior high school districts in the city of Sendai in *** these surveys,children were asked whether they had seen 12 species groups within the past *** examine changes in children's connection with nature,we used observed frequencies as an indicator of both the abundance of the species and children's apathy toward *** and Discussions:Results indicated an increase in children's apathy toward species that had low popularity regardless of residential *** results suggest that regular exposure to wildlife would be effective in preventing the loss of children's connection with nature,particularly by reducing children's apathy toward less-popular species.

Sea level rise along China coast in the last 60 years

Based on long-term tide gauge observations in the last 60 years,the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of sea level change along the coast of China are *** results indicate that the sea level along the coast of China has been rising at an increasing rate,with an estimated acceleration of 0.07 mm/*** rise rates were 2.4 mm/a,3.4 mm/a and 3.9 mm/a during 1960–2020,1980–2020 and 1993–2020,*** the last 40 years,the coastal sea level has risen fastest in the South China Sea and slowest in the Yellow *** sea levels all show an upward trend but rise faster in winter and spring and slower in *** level change along the coast of China has significant periodic oscillations of quasi-2 a,4 a,7 a,11 a,quasi-19 a and 30–50 a,among which the 2–3 a,11 a,and 30–50 a signals are most remarkable,and the amplitude is approximately 1–2 *** coastal sea level in the most recent decade reached its highest value in the last 60 *** decadal sea level from 2010 to 2019 was approximately 133 mm higher than the average of 1960–*** orthogonal function analysis indicates that China’s coastal sea level has been changing in a north-south anti-phase pattern,with Pingtan and Fujian as the demarcation *** difference was especially obvious during 1980–1983,1995–1997 and 2011–*** coastal sea level was the highest in 2016,and this extreme sea level event was analyzed to be related mainly to the anomalous wind field and ENSO.
