Green walls as Mitigation of Urban Air Pollution:A Review of Their Effectiveness

Mitigation of urban air pollution has been constrained by the availability of urban spaces for *** walls offer the prospect of greening spaces and surfaces without requiring large *** walls can largely be divided into green facades where the aboveground parts of plants rooted in soil and pots grow directly on,and living walls holding bags,planter tiles,trays and vessels containing substrates in which plants are *** facades and living walls can be continuous or modular with repeating units that can be assembled for *** review aims to present the effectiveness of green walls in removing different types of air pollutants in indoor and outdoor *** examined more than 45 peer-reviewed recently published scholarly articles to achieve the *** highlights that most of the studies on green walls focus on particulate matter removal and green walls could effectively remove particulate matter though the effectiveness varies with plant types,air humidity,rainfall and its intensity,leaf area index and contact angle,green wall surface coverage ratio,as well as the height of green *** the height of green walls and optimizing their distance from roadsides could promote the deposition of particulate *** off could regenerate plant surfaces for capturing *** walls are also effective in removing NO2,O3,SO2 and *** active living walls,when properly designed,could have air purifying performance comparable to a HVAC *** performance of green walls could be optimized through polycultures,selection of plants,surface coverage and height,and air inflow.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF FELT TYPE VEGETATED FACADE SYSTEMS IN A TEMPERATE CLIMATE DURING HEATING AND COOLING PERIODS

Using vegetated facade systems(VFS)as a sustainable solution for existing and new buildings and evaluating thermal performance of these sytems are not a new ***,there is a gap in literature about measuring thermal performance of VFS applied on an insulated ***,in the research literature,there are few studies measuring thermal performance of felt type VFS in temperate climates,and data about the thermal performance of VFS during winter periods is still ***,the aim of the present study is to measure the thermal performance of a felt type VFS applied on a thermal insulated existing wall that us located in Kocaeli,Turkey,under Csa climate conditions during heating and cooling *** results indicate that the felt type VFS acts as a shading device and has a positive contribution to the thermal performance of building walls during a cooling *** daytime when there is a high amount of solar radiation,felt type VFS decreased exterior surface temperatures of the insulated existing wall by a maximum of 24.4℃,32.2℃ and 37.2℃,in spring,summer and fall periods,***,indoor air temperatures of the vegetated facade were lower than indoor air temperatures of the reference facade with the maximum difference of 1.8℃ during the cooling ***,test results indicate that the vegetated facade never dropped to below 0℃ while exterior surface temperatures of the reference facade dropped below 0℃ at nighttime in the winter ***,it can be claimed that the felt type VFS behaves as a thermal buffer and enhances the thermal performance of the exterior wall of the existing building during heating periods at *** a conclusion,although differences between exterior surface temperatures of vegetated and reference walls were high,differences between interior surface temperatures of vegetated and reference walls were not *** is due to the fact that the existing building exterior wall assembly includes 5 cm thickne

Research has shown the environmental benefits of green envelopes,as well as performance in terms of energy *** date,there is no analysis of the economic sustainability of these systems,which has allowed the realization of a few,albeit very well known,*** research has identified a green modular system integrated into the building envelope,designed to facilitate installation and maintenance,with competitive performance compared to other existing solutions;a system that wants to improve performance and flexibility of vertical applications,experimented on buildings,on the market,and able to adapt,above all,to the needs of the building *** is important to distinguish architectural aesthetic requirements from those of the building process;the former aim to have an authentic vertical garden,with different kinds of plants where nature dictates the rules,the latter aims to achieve the economic sustainability of vertical greenery *** paper provides an analysis of a technique based on the installation of plant bearing modular panels with turf on substructures also provided with a micro-irrigation system,which allows the construction of a modular coating,characterized by reduced thickness,that can also be integrated with other materials;installation is quick and simple,since the panel comes perfectly planted on *** addition to that it allows,from a botanical point of view,resorting to types of grass selected with a view to climate,exposure,environmental adaptability,color and shape.A comparative analysis of this green façade is also presented compared to other existing case studies,from a constructive and managerial point of view,highlighting both its economic and architectural advantages.
