Characteristics of light transmission in Summer and Winter and Its Relation to Sediment Transport in the East China Sea

light transmission data collected from June to July 1987 and from February to March 1997 by the R/V Kexue 1 in the East China Sea were used to analyze its distribution characteristics and its relation to the sediment transport in this sea. Some results obtained were: (1) The Taiwan Warm Current flowing northwards seemed to be a barrier preventing suspended matter discharged from the Changjiang River Estuary from continuously moving southeastward and causing the suspended matter to flow along a path near 123°30′E in summer and 123°00′E in winter. (2) Suspended matter in the area adjacent to the Changjiang River Estuary could not be transported southward along the coast in summer due to opposing offshore currents including the Taiwan Warm Current flowing northward and the Changjiang Diluted Water turning northeastward. (3) The thermocline and temperature front bar suspended matter from crossing through.

A location-adaptive transmission scheme for indoor visible light communication(VLC) system is proposed in this *** this scheme,the symbol error rate(SER) of less than 10-3 should be *** the scheme is realized by the variable multilevel pulse-position modulation(MPPM),where the transmitters adaptively adjust the number of time slots n in the MPPM symbol according to the position of the *** purpose of our scheme is to achieve the best data rate in the indoor different *** results show that the location-adaptive transmission scheme based on the variable MPPM is superior in the indoor VLC system.

A novel 40-Gb/s constant envelope optical frequency shift keying （FSK） transmitter and the transmission characteristics are investigated both by simulation and experiment. Meanwhile, to increase the spectrum efficiency of FSK, we propose a novel optical minimum-shift keying （MSK） scheme and analyze its per-formance compared with other MSK schemes and other traditional modulation formats. Simulation and experimental results show that the novel FSK scheme could be a potential candidate for the future high speed transmission and label switching systems. And the novel MSK scheme deserves future deep research for its potential excellent performance.

The operation of an ultra-narrow bandwidth optical filter based on the 5P3/2→5D3/2 excited-state transition in rubidium vapor is reported. The 5D3/2 state is excited by a circularly polarized pump beam at 780 nm from a diode laser. The filter displays a single 398-MHz bandwidth at a peak transmission of 9.0%, which is narrower than the Doppler bandwidth. The dependence of peak transmission on the pump intensity and cell temperature is also given.

We report experimental results on enhanced light transmission through double-layered （Ag/Au） metallic hole arrays within a skin-depth. Zero-order transmission spectrums are characterized as a function of Ag film＇s thickness, which extends from 5/15, 5/6 to approximately 5, where 5 is a skin-depth. In contrast with other reported results （Refs. [11 - 13]） in single-layered metallic hole arrays, our experimental results show much more dramatic properties of transmission process dependent on sub-5 thickness. It is shown that there is no negligible transmission enhancement at 5/15. At 5/6, much higher transmission efficiency can be achieved. With film＇s thickness being close to 5, the transmission efficiency declines contrarily. Simultaneously, the corresponding resonant peak also slightly moves toward the shorter wavelength. It is proposed that the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons （SPPs） at Ag/Au interface within 5 is involved in the process.

We demonstrate the theory of chromatic dispersion （CD）-induced constellation rotation （CR） in a radio-over-fiber （ROF） link and a method for compensation. We also propose a 60 GHz full-duplex ROF system with vector signal transmission including no CD effect. The evaluation of 5 Gb/s 16 quadrature amplitude modulation signal transmission shows that the CD-induced CR can be entirely overcome due to the proposed method which is simply implemented through an optical phase shifter. The proposed ROF schedule is not only applicable for V-band （57-64 GHz） but also fits for W-band （75-110 GHz）, or any other bandwidth.

Two kinds of subwavelength hole arrays in metallic films are designed to verify the import, ant role of the periodicity in enhanced transmission of light. The measured optical spectra show that the quasiperiodic hole arrays exhibit an enhanced transmission peak centred at 707nm with a transmission intensity of about 20%, while no plasmon resonance peak is found for the amorphous hole arrays. When the hole diameter decreases in the quasiperiodic structure, the position of the transmission peak shifts slightly, and the transmittance drops, These phenomena indicate the important role of the long-range structural order （particularly the periodicity） in assisting the coupling of incident light wave with the surface plasmon modes of the metallic structures.

A novel method for distortion-free optical pulse transmission is theoretically proposed and simulated, in which two time lenses formed by dispersion fibers and quadratic phase modulations are utilized. One is used as an optical inverse Fourier transformation （OIFT） device to transform the initial time-domain data to frequency-domain one at the transmitter and the other as an optical Fourier transformation （OFT） device to recover the data at the receiver. By using the unchanged spectral envelope in linear optical fiber communication, the initial data can be recovered. Through simulations, a 10× 100 Gb/s intensity-modulated direct-detection （IM-DD） dense wavelength division multiplexing （DWDM） system over 20000 km transmission without the compensation for polarization mode dispersion （PMD） and dispersion slope is achieved, which can be used to upgrade the current 100Gb/s IM-DD system to a 100-Gb/s one directly.
