Primary hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC） is a quite frequent tumor which results in high mortality and most often exhibits a poor response to present drug therapies. Clearly, a thorough understanding of the biological bases of this malignancy might suggest new strategies for its treatment. Here we examine the evidences that both ＂pharmacological＂ mechanisms （e.g. drug transporter or detoxification enzyme over-expression） and alterations in other critical factors, including the IAPs （Inhibitory of Apoptosis Proteins）, involved in enhancement of cell survival and proliferation may determine the therapeutic resistance of HCC; we also underline the possible role in the process of the activation of transcription factors, like NF-κB, capable of contemporaneously up-regulating the mechanisms discussed. On this basis, we finally comment on the possible use of natural multi-targeted antitumoral agents like plant polyphenols to achieve sensitization to treatments in HCC.

The mitochondria-mediated caspase activation pathway is a major apoptotic pathway characterized by mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization （MOMP） and subsequent release of cytochrome c into the cytoplasm to activate caspases. MOMP is regulated by the Bcl-2 family of proteins. This pathway plays important roles not only in normal development, main- tenance of tissue homeostasis and the regulation of immune system, but also in human diseases such as immune disorders, neurodegeneration and cancer. In the past decades the molecular basis of this pathway and the regulatory mechanism have been comprehen- sively studied, yet a great deal of new evidence indi- cates that cytochrome c release from mitochondria does not always lead to irreversible cell death, and that caspase activation can also have non-death functions. Thus, many unsolved questions and new challenges are still remaining. Furthermore, the dysfunction of this pathway involved in cancer development is obvious, and targeting the pathway as a therapeutic strategy has been extensively explored, but the efficacy of the tar- geted therapies is still under development. In this review we will discuss the mitochondria-mediated apoptosis pathway and its physiological roles and therapeutic implications.

Characteristics of total suspended particulates in the atmosphere of Yulong Snow Mountain,southwestern China

The measurement of black carbon （BC） and organic carbon （OC）, dust in total suspended particulates （TSP） was carried out at Yulong Snow Mountain （Mt. Yulong） and Ganhaizi Basin, in the Mt. Yulong region, southwestern China. TSP samples were analyzed using a thermal/optical reflectance carbon analyzer. Results show that average BC and OC concentrations in TSP in the Mt. Yulong region were 1.61±1.15 μg/m3 and 2.96±1.59 μg/m3, respectively. Statistical results demonstrated that there were significant differences in mean BC and OC contents between Ganhaizi Basin and Mt. Yulong at the 0.05 level. Strong correlations between BC and OC indicate their common dominant emission sources and transport processes. Temporal variations ofBC, OC, and optical attenuation （ATN） values were consistent with each other in carbonaceous aerosols. The ratios of OC/BC in monsoon season were significantly higher than in non-monsoon in aerosols from Ganhaizi, which is closely related to the formation of secondary organic carbon （SOC） and extensive motor vehicle emissions from tourism activities. The temporal variations of BC, OC and ATN in carbonaceous aerosols in Ganhaizi and Mt. Yulong were totally different, probably due to elevation difference and diverse tourism activity intensity between the two sites. Time-averaged aerosol optical depth （AOD） at the wavelength of 550 nm in Mt. Yulong was higher than that of the inland of the Tibetan Plateau （TP）. Source apportionment indicated that intensive exhaust emissions from tourism vehicles were the main local sources of atmospheric pollutant in the Mt. Yulong region. Biomass-burning emissions released from South Asia could penetrate into the inland of the TP under the transport of summer monsoon. Further study is needed to assess light absorption and radiative forcing of carbonaceous aerosols, and modeling research in combination with long-term in-situ observations of light-absorbing particulates （laps） in the TP is also urgently needed in futur

景观破碎化对东北虎主要猎物种群动态影响的模拟

以完达山东部地区的现实景观为背景,采用空间直观种群模型laps和情景模拟相结合的"虚拟实验"途径,模拟了在10个不同破碎化程度的景观情景中东北虎的主要猎物于1992-2011年间的种群动态,评价了完达山东部地区当前的景观破碎化程度对东北虎主要猎物种群动态的影响。结果表明:laps模型准确刻画了研究区东北虎主要猎物种群数量急剧下降的趋势,2002年模拟的东北虎主要猎物的种群数量和实测值之间没有显著差异,马鹿、野猪和狍子的P值分别为0.8651、0.9534和0.2836;不同生境类型的种群密度数据与实测值之间均没有显著差异,其中阔叶林生境中的马鹿、野猪和狍子的P值分别为0.8521、0.9447和0.3152;在灌丛生境中的马鹿、野猪和狍子的P值分别为0.8846、0.9576和0.2415。斑块类型和景观水平上的格局指标变化趋势表明由于农田扩张导致10个景观情景的破碎化程度逐渐增加,景观水平的破碎化程度低于斑块类型水平。方差分析显示10个景观情景中的种群数量没有显著差异,马鹿、野猪和狍子的P值分别为0.8516、0.2624和0.7636,说明研究区当前的景观破碎化程度对种群动态影响并不显著。完达山东部地区存在盗猎等人为干扰,导致了东北虎主要猎物的数量远低于环境容纳量,景观破碎化虽然在局部地区较为严重,但完达山东部地区整体上景观破碎化并不强烈,该地区景观破碎化的效应尚未显现。认为控制盗猎等人为干扰是增加该地区东北虎主要猎物的数量、实现东北虎种群恢复所应优先采取的措施。

A Qualitative Study of the Influence of Grooved Mold Surface Topography on the Formation of Surface Marks on As-Cast Ingots of Aluminum Alloy 3003

The effects of the wavelength and orientation of machined grooves on a mold surface, casting speed, and melt superheat on the formation of surface marks on as-cast ingots were studied with an immersion casting tester and copper mold chill blocks. The mold surface topographies included a polished smooth surface, and those with machined unidirectional parallel contoured grooves oriented either parallel (vertical) or perpendicular (horizontal) to the casting direction. The unidirectional grooves were 0.232 mm deep with wavelength or spacing between 1 and 15 mm. The casting speed and melt superheat were between 1 and 200 mm/s, and 10 and 50 K, respectively. Two primary types of surface marks were observed on ingots cast with the copper mold with smooth surface topography, namely the finer and closely spaced ripples (Type I), and the widely spaced but coarser laps (Type II). The latter were more prevalent at the higher casting speeds and melt superheats. Qualitatively, formation of both types of surface marks on the as-cast ingots of the aluminum alloy 3003 appeared to be alleviated by increase in casting speed and melt superheat, and by the use of molds with grooved surface topography. In fact, casting with a mold surface with 1 mm spaced grooves that are perpendicular to the casting direction eliminated the formation of surface marks at casting speeds greater than 1 mm/s. It also improved the uniformity of the ingot subsurface microstructure and eliminated the associated subsurface segregation.
