The World Health Organization recently raised concerns about antimicrobial resistance and lack of novel antibiotics in the health sector. The success rate of drug discovery is higher when chemical constituents are sourced from natural products and when drug candidates are based on the indigenous knowledge of local communities. Tropical rainforests are an important source of medicinal plants for traditional healthcare systems. The pharmaceutical industry also recognizes the potential of rainforests in novel drug development. However, habitat degradation and loss of traditional knowledge are endangering the healing powers of nature. The islands of Fiji have a rich cultural history of traditional medicine and a number of medicinal plants are sourced from the country's rainforest ecosystems. While deforestation and forest degradation are decimating unique rainforest biodiversity and reducing access to medicinal plants in the wild, inter-generational erosion of ethnobotanical knowledge is attributed to acculturation, rural-urban migration and their effects on the transmission of oral traditions from one generation to another. Under these conditions, plants may disappear before their therapeutic value is formally identified. This review summarizes the importance of traditional medicinal knowledge and the potential for drug discovery from the tropical rainforest ecosystems of Fiji. However, there are several challenges that need to be addressed to realize the true potential of ethnopharmacology in this country.

Coastal zones and many small islands are highly susceptible to sea-level rise(SLR). Coastal zones have a large exposed population and integrated high-value assets, and islands provide diverse ecosystem services to millions of people worldwide. The coastal zones and small islands affected by SLR are likely to suffer from submergence, flooding and erosion in the future. However, very few studies have addressed the heterogeneity in SLR changes and the potential risk to coastal zones and small islands. Here we used the mean sea level(MSL) derived from satellite altimetry data to analyse the trends and accelerations of SLRs along global coastal zones and small islands. We found that except for the Antarctic coastal zone, the annual MSL within 50 km of the coasts presented an increasing trend of 3.09 ± 0.13 mm a^-1 but a decreasing acceleration of -0.02 ± 0.02 mm a^-2 from 1993 to 2017. The highest coastal MSL trend of3.85 ± 0.60 mm a^-1 appeared in Oceania, and the lowest trend of 2.32 ± 0.37 mm a^-1 occured in North America. Africa, North America and South America showed acceleration trends, and Eurasia, Australia and Oceania had deceleration trends. Further, MSLs around global small islands reflected an increasing trend with a rate of 3.01 ± 0.16 mm a^-1 but a negative acceleration of -0.02 ± 0.02 mm a^-2. Regional heterogeneity in the trends and accelerations of MSLs along the coasts and small islands suggests that stakeholders should take discriminating precautions to cope with future disadvantageous impacts of the SLR.

Despite it is widely accepted that intrapopulation variation is fundamental to ecological and evolutionary processes,this level of information has only recently been included into network analysis of species/population interactions.When done,it has revealed non-random patterns in the distribution of trophic resources.Nestedness in resource use among individuals is the most recurrent observed pattern,often accompanied by an absence of modularity,but no previous studies examine bipartite modularity.We use network analysis to describe the diet composition of the Balearic endemic lizard Podarcis lilfordi in 2 islets at population and individual levels,based on the occurrence of food items in fecal samples.Our objectives are to 1)compare niche structure at both levels,2)characterize niche partition using nestedness and modularity,and 3)assess how size,sex,season,and spatial location influence niche structure.At population-level niche width was wide,but narrow at the level of the individual.Both islet networks were nested,indicating similar ranking of the food preferences among individuals,but also modular,which was partially explained by seasonality.Sex and body size did not notably affect diet composition.Large niche overlap and therefore possibly relaxed competition were observed among females in one of the islets and during spring on both islets.Likewise,higher modularity in autumn suggests that higher competition could lead to specialization in both populations,because resources are usually scarce in this season.The absence of spatial location influence on niche might respond to fine-grained spatio-temporally distribution of food resources.Behavioral traits,not included in this study,could also influence resource partitioning.

Since the time of Darwin(1859)and Wallace(1869),islands have been regarded by scientists as a prime target for scrutinizing the forces that may influence evolution and diversification and important elements in biogeographic studies.This research aims to scrutinize whether and to what extent the composition and structure of past mammal insular faunas and their changes through time may provide sound clues for inferring the paleogeographical evolution of a region.As a case study,I critically analyzed the dynamics shown by the Plio-Pleistocene mammalian fauna of 3 Western Mediterranean insular districts,the Balearic islands,Sardinia and Sicily,each characterized by its own peculiar paleobiogeographical evolutionary history.The revision of faunas and the critical analysis of the dispersal ability of the ancestors of island settlers have allowed hypothesizing on the time and mode of island colonization.The results obtained confirm that the early isolation of the Balearic islands from the mainland led to the establishment of an endemic fauna since the pre-Messinian Miocene(?Astaracian European Land Mammal Age,MN7/8),and that Sardinia has definitely been isolated since the Pliocene,although dispersal events led to some faunal turnovers during the Pleistocene.In addition,the results suggest for Sicily a complex,still imperfectly disentangled history of alternate phases of complete separation and sporadic,more or less difficult connections with southern Italy.

Background: The guild concept is useful for understanding the community structure in a land-bridge island system,but most fragmentation studies have focused only on the importance of island area and isolation, other island attributes such as perimeter-area ratio(PAR) were overlooked or understudied.Methods: We have adopted a guild approach to investigate the impacts of island attributes on bird guild richness on a set of 41 recently isolated land-bridge islands in the Thousand Island Lake(TIL), China.Results: We found insectivores had the largest number of species(34 species), fol owed by understory foraging guilds(28 species), omnivores(27 species) and canopy guilds(25 species). Furthermore, our data showed that migrants and residents responded equal y to island area, insectivores and understory guilds were sensitive to island area but omnivores and canopy guilds were not very sensitive. Most guild richness was determined by island area, except for omnivores and canopy guilds.Conclusions: Although PAR or habitat diversity found to be important for bird species richness, our results highlight the importance of island area in maintaining bird diversity in fragmented island systems.

Homologous feature point extraction is a key problem in the optical and synthetic aperture radar （SAR） image registration for islands. A new feature point extraction method using a threshold shrink operator and non-subsampled wavelet transform （TSO-NSWT） for optical and SAR image registration was proposed. Moreover, the matching for this proposed feature was different from the traditional feature matching strategies and was performed using a similarity measure computed from neighborhood circles in low-frequency bands. Then, a number of reliably matched couples with even distributions were obtained, which assured the accuracy of the registration. Application of the proposed algorithm to SPOT-5 （multi-spectral） and YG-1 （SAR） images showed that a large number of accurately matched couples could be identified. Additionally, both of the root mean square error （RMSE） patterns of the registration parameters computed based on the TSO-NSWT algorithm and traditional NSWT algorithm were analyzed and compared, which further demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The algorithm can supply the crucial step for island image registration and island recognition.

Knowledge and practice of care-givers who have under-five diarrhoeal children:a quantitative cross-sectional study in Mataniko settlements in Honiara, Solomon islands, 2016

Introduction:Diarrhoea remains the second most serious health problem among children below five years old in Solomon islands and is one of the leading causes of infant mortality,which caused about one in every ten children dying before the age of five years.Globally,around 6 million children (＜5 years) suffer from diarrhoea each year.Because of lack of previous studies,this study aims to assess the predictors of knowledge and practice of caregivers towards diarrhoea among under-five children in Mataniko informal settlements in Honiara,Solomon islands,2016.Methods:This quantitative study was conducted at three randomly selected settlements in Honiara,Solomon islands from June to July 2016.This study was conducted among both male and female caregivers who had children under five years of age,were aged 18 and over,live in Solomon islands and were willing to participate in the study.A validated structured questionnaire was used to collect the data based on a 2-week recall of diarrhoea episodes.To avoid double-counting,each surveyed household was geo-referenced using global positioning system (GPS).The collected data were entered and analysed using SPSS (version 23.0) and descriptive and analytical statistics.P＜0.05 was considered as statistically significant.This study was approved by relevant ethical committees.Results:A total of 205 caregivers with at least one child under-five years participated in the study.The mean ages of caregivers and the under-five children were (30.7+8.2) years and (2.6+1.5) years,respectively.Among 205 caregivers,94 of them had reported that their children (＜5 years) had suffered with at least one episode of diarrhoea within the last 2 weeks prior to the survey.This gave a prevalence rate of 45.9％.The caregiver's knowledge about the causes (99.0％) and prevention (98.0％) of under-five diarrhoea was extremely high.Nevertheless,less than half had regularly practiced essential hygiene habits.The factors which appeared to be significantly associated with under-five diarrhoea were irregular hand

The numerical method of lines(MOLs)in coordination with the classical fourth-order Runge Kutta(RK(4,4))method is used to solve shallow water equations(SWEs)for foreseeing water levels owing to the nonlinear interaction of tide and surge accompanying with a storm along the coast of Bangladesh.The SWEs are developed by extending the body forces with tide generating forces(TGFs).Spatial variables of the SWEs along with the boundary conditions are approximated by means of finite difference technique on an Arakawa C-grid to attain a system of ordinary differential equations(ODEs)of initial valued in time,which are being solved with the aid of the RK(4,4)method.Nested grid technique is adopted to solve coastal complexities closely with least computational cost.A stable tidal solution in the region of our choice is produced by applying the tidal forcing with the major tidal constituent M2(lunar semi-diurnal)along the southern open-sea boundary of the outer scheme.Numerical experimentations are carried out to simulate water levels generated by the cyclonic storm AILA along the coast of Bangladesh.The model simulated results are found to be in a reasonable agreement with the limited available reported data and observations.

Gyrokinetic simulations of nonlinear interactions between magnetic islands and microturbulence

A conservative scheme of kinetic electrons for gyrokinetic simulations in the presence of magnetic islands has been implemented and verified in the gyrokinetic toroidal code, where zonal and nonzonal components of all perturbed quantities are solved together. Using this new conservative scheme, linear simulation of kinetic ballooning mode has been successfully benchmarked with the electromagnetic hybrid model. Simulations of nonlinear interactions between magnetic islands and the ion temperature gradient(ITG) mode in a tokamak show that the islands rotate at the electron diamagnetic drift velocity. The linear ITG structure shifts from the island O-point toward the X-point due to the pressure flattening effect inside the islands, and the nonlinear ITG structure peaks along the magnetic island separatrix because of the increased pressure gradient there.

Euphausia superba is a key species in the Southern Ocean that serves as a link between primary production and higher trophic levels.To investigate the feeding strategies of E.superba from the eastern South Shetland islands,fatty acid biomarkers,stable isotope signatures,and an incubation experiment were conducted.The results of the incubation experiment proved that adult E.superba mainly fed on 2–20μm particles,demonstrating the importance of nanoplankton in their diet.Moreover,significant positive relationships betweenδ15N and body size demonstrated that size-related dietary shifts were present in E.superba.Evidence from principal component analysis and the C16:1ω7/C18:4ω3 ratio showed that juveniles preferentially fed on dinoflagellates and adults were more likely to feed on diatoms.Fatty acid profiles in adult E.superba roughly mirrored the different trophic conditions and feeding strategies between stations.Adult E.superba at Stas D2-07,D5-07,DA-01 and DA-02 exhibited elevated levels of C16:1ω7,C18:4ω3,C18:1ω9 and C18:1ω9/C18:1ω7,indicating higher levels of feeding on both phytoplankton and higher trophic diets.In contrast,adult E.superba at Stas D1-03 and D1-04 were characterized by high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids ratios and low levels of C16:1ω7,C18:1ω7,C18:4ω3,C18:1ω9 and total fatty acids.We inferred that adult krill at Stas D1-03 and D1-04 still suffered from difficult dietary conditions after overwintering.The different dietary conditions between stations suggest a highly plastic feeding strategy of E.superba in the eastern South Shetland islands.
