The intriguing giant deer from the Bate cave (Crete): could paleohistological evidence question its taxonomy and nomenclature?

The research describes for the first time a possible case of pituitary gigantism in fossil mammals,precisely in deer.The pathology was detected in 2 long bones(tibia and metatarsus)belonging to an individual of an unusual large size found at the Bate cave(Rethymnon,Northern Crete).It formed the basis of Candiacervus major,the largest among the endemic deer species recorded in the Pleistocene-Early Holocene of Crete.Radiological and histomorphological examinations highlighted a reduction in cortical bone thickness and the presence of wide lacunae inside of the bone tissue.The pathological conditions suggest a pituitary gigantism diagnosis also supported by some morphological evidence,such as the extremely elongated distal part of the metatarsal diaphysis,the proportionally small proximal epiphysis,and some bone gracility.The diagnosis of a case of pituitary gigantism as presumed responsible for the extraordinary elongation of the tibia and the metatarsal bone is intriguing as they are,respectively,the paratype and the holotype of the C.major.The species represents a case of a deviation from the“island rule”in Pleistocene large mammals.The new evidence recommends a taxonomic and nomenclatural revision of this species.The main outcomes of this research are as follows:(i)a case of pituitary gigantism is described for the first time in an extinct mammal;(ii)it is underlined that paleohistology may provide interesting clues for disentangling taxonomic and nomenclatural issues;(iii)one of the very few cases of gigantism in insular mammals is being questioned.

How large are the extinct giant insular rodents? New body mass estimations from teeth and bones

The island rule entails a modification of the body size of insular mammals,a character related with numerous biological and ecological variables.From the Miocene to human colonization(Holocene),Mediterranean and Canary islands were unaltered natural ecosystems,with paleofaunas formed with endemic giant rodents among other mammals.Our aim is to create methods to estimate the body masses of fossil island rodents and address the nature of ecological pressures driving the island rule.We created regression equations based on extant ro-dent data and used these to estimate the body masses of the extinct species.Our results show strong correlations between teeth,cranial and postcranial measurements and body mass,except for the length of the long bones,the transversal diameter of the distal tibia and the anteroposterior diameter of the proximal tibia,where the equa-tions were less reliable.The use of equations obtained from a more homogeneous group(suborder and family)is preferable when analyzing the area of the first molar.The new regressions were applied to estimate the body masses of some Mediterranean and Canarian fossil rodents(Canariomys,C.bravoi 1.5 kg and C.tamarani 1 kg;Hypnomys,H.morpheus 230 g and H.onicensis 200 g;and Muscardinus cyclopeus 100 g).Our results indi-cate that under absence of predation,resource availability(island area)is the key factor that determines the size of the Canariomys sp.However,under presence of specialized predators(birds of prey),body size evolution is less pronounced(Hypnomys sp.).

Parallel patterns and trends in functional structures in extinct island mammals

Endemic mammalian species on islands are generally known to have followed a different evolutionary pathway than their mainland relatives. General patterns, such as body size trends, have been described regularly. How-ever, most island mammal species are unique and each of them is adapted to a specific local niche as part of an equally specific ecological assemblage. Therefore, comparing island species across taxa, islands and time is in-herently dangerous without understanding the adaptational value of the studied feature in the compared taxa and without taking the ecological setting of the taxa into account. In this contribution, general and recurring patterns are described per taxon. Some features, like body mass change and sturdy limbs, are relatively general, where-as most features, like bone fusions and change of orbital axis, occur only in a very few taxa. Some features are even contradictory, such as brain size and degree of hypsodonty, with each taxon having its own particular de-sign. In conclusion, general patterns are more often than not just trends and need to be applied with caution.
