Young’s double-slit experiment shows characteristics of light that are modeled as indicating a wave nature of light. Other experiments suggest a particle model of light. An experiment is performed with the Fraunhofer pattern from a first mask impinging on a transparent second mask with a slit. The screen pattern is an interference pattern such as produced in Young’s Experiment. An opaque strip between the first and second mask blocks the light of the center maxima from the first mask. The screen interference fringes remained. Moving the glass mask so the slit is removed from light shows the necessity of a slit in the second mask. This suggests a Newtonian type of light model. This experiment rejects the wave models of light.

Although they are common in nature and must certainly have been observed by early man, we have to wait till Newton for the first truly scientific study of what we now understand as interference effects in thin films. Young, Fresnel, and Maxwell all contributed and the theory was well established by the beginning of the 20th century. Coatings depending on interference, at this stage, were in their infancy and antireflection and decorative coatings, and color photography were the primary applications. By the middle of the 20th century, the situation had changed completely. Today almost the entire field of optics depends on interference optical coatings. This paper will start with a rapid account of the history and end with a survey of the range of interference coatings that are employed today with a fleeting glimpse of what might be in the future.

Heterogeneous network consists of the pico cells overlaid over the macro cell coverage area in a wireless cellular network. The pico cells are deployed to increase the capacity of the homogeneous network by reusing the spectrum further. However, more users will tend to be associated to the macro cell due to the fact that the transmit power of the pico cell is low. In order to increase the number of users associated to the pico cell, range extension techniques like biased association are used. This will cause severe interference to cell edge users of the pico cell from the macro cell causing degradation in throughput performance in the cell range extension area. In this paper, interference mitigation using receiver processing along with different scheduling techniques is proposed to improve the throughput, average delay, and the packet delivery ratio performance of the system. The performance comparison of the round robin, proportional fair and modified largest weighted delay first (MLWDF) algorithm for resource allocation using interference suppressing receiver is done, and analyzed. It is shown that the MLWDF algorithm achieves the highest throughput with minimum average delay of packets with the best delivery ratio.

We address the problem of interference as related to Satellite Personal Communication Networks (S-PCNs). Basic low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation is considered. The paper uses combined adaptive antenna arrays and adaptive filtering technique. This hybrid linear adaptive technique provides improved performance eliminating interference, particularly uncorrelated signals residing in the antenna sidelobes.

Visual cryptography is an encryption method that shares a secret image through several encrypted images. General visual cryptography has no stacking order dependence, and only one image can be decoded regardless of stacking order of encrypted images. We previously reported a color visual cryptography using interference color (or polarization color) of retarder films. The interference color changes depending on the stacking order of retarder films. In this paper, we propose and develop a color visual cryptography that displays two images by changing stacking order of retarder films.

This paper analyses frequency tracking characteristics of a complex-coefficient adaptive infinite-impulse response (IIR) notch filter used for suppression of narrow-band interference (NBI) with a randomly-varying frequency in a quadriphase shift keying (QPSK) modulated direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) communication system. The QPSK DS-CDMA signals are transmitted over a frequency non-selective Rayleigh fading channel. The analysis is based on a first-order real-coefficient difference equation with respect to steady-state instantaneous frequency tracking error from which a closed-form expression that relates frequency tracking mean square error (MSE) with number of DS-CDMA active users and NBI power is obtained. Closed-form expressions for optimum notch bandwidth coefficient and step size constant that minimize the frequency tracking MSE are also derived. Computer simulations are included to substantiate the accuracy of the analyses.

A recently proposed model of the Dirac electron, which has been shown to describe several observed properties of the particle correctly, is in the present paper shown to be also able to explain quantum interference by classical probabilities. According to this model, the electron is not point-like, but rather an “entity with structure”, formed by a fast periodic motion of a “light-like object”, whose momentum (p) causes the angular momentum responsible for the spin, and whose energy (E = pc) is equal to the energy of the electron, mc2. A qualitative description of the model is given, together with the quantitative formulae that allow to discuss interference. Applied to the experimental situation of the “two-slit” experiment, the formulae yield the same time dependence of the detection probability as the quantum mechanical treatment, and hence the same interference pattern. In contrast to quantum mechanics, the pattern is due to “particle interference” rather than to “wave interference”. No wave-particle paradox arises. The merits of the model are summarized, and its physical content discussed.
