MECHANISM OF WAVE FORMATION AT THE interface IN EXPLOSIVE WELDING

Some of the main progress on the investigation of the mechanism of the wave formation in explosive welding at the Institute of Mechanics is summarized and otters'previous works are re- viewed.Our systematic experiments and analysis do not substantiate the theory of wave formation based on Karman vortex-street analogy or Helmholtz instability.On the contrary,they show that materi- al strength insensitive to strain rate plays an important role.A simple hydro-plastic model is presented to explain the main features regarding the interracial wave formation and to estimate the magnitude of wave length.The result is in broad agreement with experiment.

Experimental verification of the detect interlaminar damage of a interface wave method to metal multilayer structure

The interface wave traveling along the bound- ary of two materials has been studied for nearly a century. However, experiments, engineering applications, and interface wave applications to the non-destructive inspec- tion of interlaminar composite have developed slowly. In this research, an experiment that applies Stoneley waves （a type of interfacial wave between two solid half-spaces） is implemented to detect the damage in a multilayer structure. The feasibility of this method is also verified. First, the wave velocity and wave structure of Stoneley waves at a perfectly bonded aluminum-steel interface are obtained by solving the Stoneley wave dispersion equation of two elastic half-spaces. Thereafter, an experiment is conducted to measure the Stoneley wave velocity of an aluminum- steel laminated beam and to locate interlaminar cracks by referring to the Stoneley wave velocity and echo wave time. Results indicate that the location error is less than 2%. Therefore, Stoneley waves show great potential as a non-destructive inspection method of a multilayer structure.

The reflection-transmission coefficients of the stress wave propagating through a jointed rock mass are of great concern in many fields,for example seismology,exploration geophysics and geotechnical engineering.For a natural jointed rock mass,both the rock material and the joints should be treated to be viscous-elastic in the practical dynamic analysis.In this paper,Kelvin viscous-elastic model is adopted to describe the rock deformation behaviour;the viscouselastic behaviour of the unfilled wet joints is reproduced by the displacement and velocity discontinuity model,which also behaves as Kelvin viscous-elastic deformation behaviour.Based on the propagator matrix method(PMM),the reflection-transmission coefficients after P-wave propagating through the rock masses with a single joint and multiple parallel joints are studied,respectively,taking account for the normalized joint elastic stiffness(K),normalized joint viscous stiffness(η′),the rock quality factor(Q),the incident angle(α),the dimensionless joint spacing(ξ)and the joint number.The results show that the increment ofη′has double effect.That is not only can it increase the effective joint stiffness(positive effect),but also can cause energy loss(negative effect).For a certain K,the transmission coefficients first decrease to a minimum,then increase with increase ofη′,while the reflection coefficients always decrease.There exists a critical value ofη′which makes energy loss achieve a maximum value.The change trend of the reflectiontransmission coefficients that varies with a is similar to that of pure elastic joints except that the value ofη′has an effect on the magnitude of these coefficients.In the case of the multiple parallel joints,only transmission coefficients are studied.Bothη′and Q has an important effect on the interlayer multiple reflections,which makes the variation of transmission coefficients very different from the purely elastic results.Finally,to proof the reliability of PMM adopted in this paper,the corresponding numerical models with 2-D
