The time series of multiple sources of satellite data are used to examine the interannual variability of chlorophyll a concentration （Chl a） and its relation to the physical environment during the autumn monsoon transitional period in the Taiwan Strait （TWS）. The satellite data included the Chl a concentration and sea surface temperature （SST） derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （MODIS）/ Aqua as well as the multi-sensors merged wind products from 2002 to 2012. The results show that the average Chl a concentration of the whole TWS is mainly contributed by the northern TWS. The average Chl a in the northern TWS is 3.6 times that in the southern TWS. The maximum variability of Chl a is located in the frontal regions between the cold Zhe-Min Coastal Water and the strait warm water. The temporal change of Chl a concentration is different in the northern and southern TWS. The changes in the relative strength of the cold and warm water masses is suggested to be the dominant processes in controlling the phytoplankton growth in the northern TWS, while there is wind-induced mixing in the southern TWS. Additionally, La Nina events exhibited complex effects on the interannual variability of Chl a concentration in autumn. The longterm time series of physical and biological observations are especially needed to better understand how the TWS complex ecosystem responds to climate variations.

A 2-dimensional atmospheric transport model is deployed in a simplified CO 2 inverse study. Calculated carbon flux distribution for the interval from 1981 to 1997 confirms the existence of a terrestrial carbon sink in mid-high latitude area of North Hemisphere. Strong interannual variability exists in carbon flux patterns, implying a possible link with ENSO and other natural episodes such as Pinatubo volcano eruption in 1991. Mechanism of this possible link was investigated with statistic method. Correlation analysis indicated that in North Hemisphere, climatic factors such as temperature and precipitation, to some extend, could influence the carbon cycle process of land and ocean, thus cause considerable change in carbon flux distribution. In addition, correlation study also demonstrated the possible important role of Asian terrestrial ecosystems in carbon cycle.

The interannual variability of autumn precipitation over South China and its relationship with atmospheric circulation and SST anomalies are examined using the autumn precipitation data of 160 stations in China and the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis dataset from 1951 to 2004. Results indicate a strong interannual variability of autumn precipitation over South China and its positive correlation with the autumn western Pacific subtropical high （WPSH）. In the flood years, the WPSH ridge line lies over the south of South China and the strengthened ridge over North Asia triggers cold air to move southward. Furthermore, there exists a significantly anomalous updraft and cyclone with the northward stream strengthened at 850 hPa and a positive anomaly center of meridional moisture transport strengthening the northward warm and humid water transport over South China. These display the reverse feature in drought years. The autumn precipitation interannual variability over South China correlates positively with SST in the western Pacific and North Pacific, whereas a negative correlation occurs in the South Indian Ocean in July. The time of the strongest lag-correlation coefficients between SST and autumn precipitation over South China is about two months, implying that the SST of the three ocean areas in July might be one of the predictors for autumn precipitation interannual variability over South China. Discussion about the linkage among July SSTs in the western Pacific, the autumn WPSH and autumn precipitation over South China suggests that SST anomalies might contribute to autumn precipitation through its close relation to the autumn WPSH.

Features of the interannual variability of the spring Wyrtki Jet in the tropical Indian Ocean are revealed using observation data and model *** results show that the jet has signifi cant interannual variation,which has a signifi cant correlation with winter El Niño Modoki index(R=0.62).During spring after an El Niño(La Niña)Modoki event,the Wyrtki Jet has a positive(negative)anomaly,forced by a westerly(easterly)wind *** result of a linear-continuously stratifi ed model shows that the fi rst two baroclinic modes explain most of the interannual variability of the spring Wyrtki Jet(~70%)and the third to fi fth modes together account for approximately 30%.Surface wind anomalies in the tropical Indian Ocean are related to the Walker circulation anomaly associated with El Niño/La Niña *** interannual variability of the spring Wyrtki Jet has an evident impact on sea surface salinity transport before the onset phase of the summer monsoon in the Indian Ocean.

interannual variability of thermal front west of Luzon Island during the winter of 1993-2013 is examined with the method of singular value decomposition （SVD） and a suite of satellite measurements in this paper. It is found that both the area and intensity of the thermal front west of Luzon Island show apparent interannual variability. Further study based on SVD shows that the interannual variability of the thermal front is highly associated with E1 Nifio and Southern Oscillation （ENSO）, and the correlation coefficient between Nifio3.4 index and the first Principal Component （PC1） of thermal front can reach -0.65. The mechanism can be described as follows. In E1 Nifio （La Nifia） years, the East Asian winter monsoon （EAWM） is weakened （enhanced）, inducing weaker （stronger） local wind stress curl （WSC） west of Luzon Island, and resulting in weakened （enhanced） Luzon cold eddy, which finally leads to the weakening （enhancement） of the thermal front.

The major feature, interannual variability and variation cause of the Mindanao Eddy and its im- pact on the thermohaline structure are analyzed based on the Argo profiling float data, the history observed data and the SODA data. The analysis results show that the Mindanao Eddy is a per- manent cyclonic meso-scale eddy and spreads vertically from about 500 m depth upward do about 50 m depth. In addition to its strong seasonal variability, the Mindanao Eddy displays a remark- able interannual variability associated with ENSO. It strengthens and expands eastward during E1 Nifio while it weakens and retreats westward during La Nifia. The interannual variability in the Mindanao Eddy may be caused by the North Equatorial Counter Current, the North Equatorial Current, the Mindanao Current and the Indonesian Through Flow. The eddy variability can have a great influence on the thermohaline structure pattern in the local upper ocean. When the eddy is strong, the cold and low salinity water inside the eddy moves violently upward from deep layer, the thermoeline depth greatly shoals, and the subsurface high salinity water largely decreases ,with the upper mixed layer becoming thinner, and vice versa.

The high ridge in the northern branch of the subtropical westerly （hereafter referred to as northern branch ridge） extends from the north of the Tibetan Plateau to the north of Barr Kashmir Lake （32.5°-47.5°N, 70°-95°E） during wintertime. The intensity index and zonal position index of the wintertime northern branch ridge （WNBR） are defined in this study by using the NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data and precipitation and temperature observations at 160 stations in China. interannual variation features of the WNBR and its relation with precipitation and surface air temperature in China are discussed based on wavelet analysis, correlation analysis, and composite analysis. The results indicate that the intensity and zonal position of the WNBR exhibit significant interannual variability. The intensity of the WNBR gradually weakens and varies in periodic cycles of 4-6, quasi-2, and quasi-16 yr. Its zonal position shifts westward slightly and varies in periodic cycles of quasi-8 and quasi-16 yr. The WNBR is highly correlated with precipitation and surface air temperature in China. When the WNBR is strong （weak） and its zonal position shifts eastward （westward）, winter precipitation in Northeast China and the northern region of Northwest China increases （decreases）, whereas precipitation decreases in central China, South China, and eastern regions of Northwest and Southwest China. Meanwhile, surface air temperatures in most areas of China are higher （lower） than normal. Further investigation has revealed that the two indexes are closely related to variations in general atmospheric circulation, which explains why there exists a close linkage between the variation of the WNBR and climate in China. It is believed that the WNBR is also tied to the Rossby wave, the North Atlantic Oscillation, the East Asian trough, and the North Pacific jet stream.

interannual variability(IAV)in the barrier layer thickness(BLT)and forcing mechanisms in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean(EEIO)and Bay of Bengal(BoB)are examined using monthly Argo data sets during 2002–*** BLT during November–January(NDJ)in the EEIO shows strong IAV,which is associated with the Indian Ocean dipole mode(IOD),with the IOD leading the BLT by two *** the negative IOD phase,the westerly wind anomalies driving the downwelling Kelvin waves increase the isothermal layer depth(ILD).Moreover,the variability in the mixed layer depth(MLD)is *** by the Wyrtki jet,the MLD presents negative anomalies west of 85°E and strong positive anomalies between 85°E and 93°***,the BLT shows positive anomalies except between 86°E and 92°E in the ***,the IAV in the BLT during December–February(DJF)in the BoB is also *** the eastern and northeastern BoB,the IAV in the BLT is remotely forced by equatorial zonal wind stress anomalies associated with the El Ni?o-Southern Oscillation(ENSO).In the western BoB,the regional surface wind forcing-related ENSO modulates the BLT variations.
