Tissue engineering(TE)is critical in oral and craniofacial reconstruction.One of the most popular topics on the biomaterial-based tissue regeneration process may be the interaction between cells and scaffolds.An increasing number of studies have identified the variables affecting cell-scaffold interaction.The creation and investigation of new scaffolds for TE and regenerative medicine based on specific interactions have become possible owing to these findings.This review discusses the effects of various types of scaffold materials on cells in TE.Because the intrinsic properties of scaffolds are essential,the influence of the physical,chemical,mechanical,and biological characteristics of scaffold materials on cell-scaffold interaction that has been discovered in recent research is elaborated in this review.The components carried by scaffolds,the degradation process,and the role of degraded products in cell-scaffold interactions are examined.Further,the roles of cells,including cell types,functions,and adhesion mechanisms,and extracellular matrix are discussed.Finally,the latest research progress on cell-scaffold interactions among various engineered tissues or organs in the oral and craniofacial region is summarized.A deeper understanding of cell-scaffold interactions is anticipated to benefit the development of TE and regenerative medicine.

interactions of Lump and Solitons to Generalized(2 + 1)-Dimensional Ito Systems

The(2 + 1)-dimensional Ito equation is extended to a general form including some nonintegrable effects via introducing generalized bilinear operators. It is pointed out that the nonintegrable(2 + 1)-dimensional Ito equation contains lump solutions and interaction solutions between lump and stripe solitons. The result shows that the lump soliton will be swallowed or arisen by a stripe soliton in a fixed time. Furthermore, by the interaction between a lump and a paired resonant stripe soliton, the lump will be transformed to an instanton or a rogue wave.

interactions of naturally occurring compounds with antimicrobials

Antibiotics are among the most often used medications in human healthcare and agriculture.Overusing these substances can lead to complications such as increasing antibiotic resistance in bacteria or a toxic effect when administering large amounts.To solve these problems,new solutions in antibacterial therapy are needed.The use of natural products in medicine has been known for centuries.Some of them have antibacterial activity,hence the idea to combine their activity with commercial antibiotics to reduce the latter's use.This review presents collected information on natural compounds(terpenes,alkaloids,flavonoids,tannins,sulfoxides,and mycotoxins),of which various drug interactions have been observed.Many of the indicated compounds show synergistic or additive interactions with antibiotics,which suggests their potential for use in antibacterial therapy,reducing the toxicity of the antibiotics used and the risk of further development of bacterial resistance.Unfortunately,there are also compounds which interact antagonistically,potentially hindering the therapy of bacterial infection.Depending on its mechanism of action,each compound can behave differently in combination with different antibiotics and when acting against various bacterial strains.

The effects of the long range electrostatic interaction in twisted bilayer graphene are described using the HartreeFock approximation. The results show a significant dependence of the band widths and shapes on electron filling,and the existence of broken symmetry phases at many densities, either valley/spin polarized, with broken sublattice symmetry, or both.

Protein colloidal nanoparticles(NPs)are ubiquitous present in nature and function as building blocks with multiple functions in both food formulations and biological processes.Food scientists are inspired by naturally occurring proteins to induce self-assembly behavior of protein by manipulating environmental parameters,providing opportunities to construct special and expected NPs.Zein and casein,the main proteins derived from corn and milk,are two examples of the most prevalently studied food proteins for nanoarchitectures in recent years.In this article,the compositions,structures,and physicochemical properties of these two proteins and casein derivatives are summarized as well as their interactions and characterizations.Strategies to fabricate zein-sodium caseinate based NPs are critically highlighted and illustrated.Particularly,applications such as encapsulation and delivery of bioactive compounds,producing food packaging for enhanced antioxidative and antimicrobial effects,and stabilization of emulsions to achieve fat replacement.Due to the imperative role of food proteins in diet composition,this review not only provides cutting-edge knowledge for nanoparticle construction but also opens new avenues for efficient utilization and exploitation of food proteins.

First-principles study of substitutional solute and carbon interactions in tungsten

Interstitial carbon and substitutional transition metal(TM)solutes are common impurities in tungsten and tungsten alloys.Yet,despite its important role in affecting mechanical and irradiation performances of tungsten,the interplay between these impurities remains largely unknown.In this work,we performed systematic first-principles simulations to study the interaction between carbon and TM solutes.By calculating related binding energies,we found that interplay between carbon and TM solutes is dominated by elastic interactions,with carbon generally showing attractions to TM solutes.Further,including vacancies in our calculation,we found that all solute-vacancy-carbon complexes are energetically stable with respect to associated point defects.Additional analysis shows that vacancy-carbon binding is generally weakened by TM solutes,while carbon also in turn reduces the binding energy between vacancy and TM solutes.Based on these binding energy results,we,respectively,evaluated the effect of solute and carbon on each other’s diffusion behaviors.We found that Cr and V slightly decrease the carbon diffusivity while other commonly seen TM solutes show little impacts on carbon diffusion,and we also expect carbon to slow down vacancy-mediated TM solute diffusion in tungsten.

Split Nano luciferase complementation for probing protein-protein interactions in plant cells

Deciphering protein-protein interactions(PPIs)is fundamental for understanding signal transduction pathways in plants.The split firefly luciferase(Fluc)complementation(SLC)assay has been widely used for analyzing PPIs.However,concern has risen about the bulky halves of Fluc interfering with the functions of their fusion partners.Nano luciferase(Nluc)is the smallest substitute for Fluc with improved stability and luminescence.Here,we developed a dual-use system enabling the detection of PPIs through the Nluc-based SLC and co-immunoprecipitation assays.This was realized by coexpression of two proteins under investigation in fusion with the HA-or FLAG-tagged Nluc halves,respectively.We validated the robustness of this system by reproducing multiple previously documented PPIs in protoplasts or Agrobacterium-transformed plants.We next applied this system to evaluate the homodimerization of Arabidopsis CERK1,a coreceptor of fungal elicitor chitin,and its heterodimerization with other homologs in the absence or presence of chitin.Moreover,split fragments of Nluc were fused to two cytosolic ends of Arabidopsis calcium channels CNGC2 and CNGC4 to help sense the allosteric change induced by the bacterial elicitor flg22.Collectively,these results demonstrate the usefulness of the Nluc-based SLC assay for probing constitutive or inducible PPIs and protein allostery in plant cells.

Herbal medicines, including traditional Chinese medicines(TCMs), have been used in Eastern countries for treating diseases such as cancer for thousands of years. With the growing knowledge of tumorigenesis and cancer therapy, some natural compounds have been developed as clinical anticancer drugs. In addition, many compounds and TCMs have been characterized as complementary and alternative treatments,with synergetic effects on enhancing the efficacy or reducing the side effects of the therapeutics. In this review, we summarized the recent studies focusing on the combination of natural compounds or TCM decoction with chemotherapeutics. The detailed mechanisms of action of the combinations and the application of analytical methods on TCM development are also discussed.

Techniques for detecting protein-protein interactions in living cells:principles, limitations, and recent progress

Detecting protein-protein interactions(PPIs) provides fundamental information for understanding biochemical processes such as the transduction of signals from one cellular location to another; however, traditional biochemical techniques cannot provide sufficient spatio-temporal information to elucidate these molecular interactions in living cells. Over the past decade, several new techniques have enabled the identification and characterization of PPIs. In this review, we summarize three main techniques for detecting PPIs in vivo, focusing on their basic principles and applications in biological studies. We place a special emphasis on their advantages and limitations, and, in particular, we introduced some uncommon new techniques, such as single-molecule FRET(smFRET), FRET-fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy(FRET-FLIM), cytoskeleton-based assay for protein-protein interaction(CAPPI) and single-molecule protein proximity index(smPPI), highlighting recent improvements to the established techniques. We hope that this review will provide a valuable reference to enable researchers to select the most appropriate technique for detecting PPIs.
