Investigation of Generalized SIFs of cracks in 3D piezoelectric media under various crack-face conditions

This paper investigates the influence of crack geometry,crack-face and loading conditions,and the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap on intensity factors of planar and non-planar cracks in linear piezoelectric media.A weakly singular boundary integral equation method together with the near-front approximation is adopted to accurately determine the intensity *** results indicate that the non-flat crack surface,the electric field,and the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap play a crucial role on the behavior of intensity *** mode-I stress intensity factors(K1)for two representative non-planar cracks under different crack-face conditions are found significantly different and they possess both upper and lower *** addition,K1 for impermeable and semi-permeable non-planar cracks treated depends strongly on the electric field whereas those of impermeable,permeable,and semi-permeable penny-shaped cracks are identical and independent of the electric *** stress/electric intensity factors predicted by permeable and energetically consistent models are,respectively,independent of and dependent on the electric field for the penny-shaped crack and the two representative non-planar ***,the permittivity of a medium inside the crack gap strongly affects the intensity factors for all crack configurations considered except for K1 of the semi-permeable pennyshaped crack.

ANISOTROPIC THERMOPIEZOELECTRIC SOLIDS WITH AN ELLIPTIC INCLUSION OR A HOLE UNDER UNIFORM HEAT FLOW

The two-dimensional problem of a thermopiezoelectric material containing an elliptic inclusion or a hole subjected to a remote uniform heat flow is studied. Based on the extended Lekhnitskii formulation for thermopiezoelectricity, conformal mapping and Laurent series expansion, the explicit and closed-form solutions are obtained both inside and outside the inclusion (or hole). For a hole problem, the exact electric boundary conditions on the hole surface are used. The results show that the electroelastic fields inside the inclusion or the electric field inside the hole are linear functions of the coordinates. When the elliptic hole degenerates into a slit crack, the electroelastic fields and the intensity factors are obtained. The effect of the heat how direction and the dielectric constant of air inside the crack on the thermal electroelastic fields are discussed. Comparison is made with two special cases of which the closed solutions exist and it is shown that our results are valid.

INVESTIGATION OF BEHAVIOR OF MODE-I INTERFACE CRACK IN PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS BY USING SCHMIDT METHOD

The behavior of a Mode-Ⅰ interface crack in piezoelectric materials was investigated under the assumptions that the effect of the crack surface overlapping very near the crack tips was negligible. By use of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations. To solve the dual integral equations, the jumps of the displacements across the crack surfaces were expanded in a series of Jacobi polynomials. It is found that the stress and the electric displacement singularities of the present interface crack solution are the same as ones of the ordinary crack in homogenous materials. The solution of the present paper can be returned to the exact solution when the upper half plane material is the same as the lower half plane material.

The behavior of two parallel symmetric cracks in piezoelectric materials under anti-plane shear loading was studied by the Schmidt method for the permeable crack face conditions. By using the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with two pairs of dual integral equations in which the unknown variable is the jump of the diplacement across the crack surfaces. These equations were solved using the Schmidt method. The results show that the stress and the electric displacement intensity factors of cracks depend on the geometry of the crack. Contrary to the impermeable crack surface condition solution, it is found that the electric displacement intensity factors for the permeable crack surface conditions are much smaller than the results for the impermeable crack surface conditions.

ANALYTICAL SOLUTIONS FOR A MODE Ⅲ CRACK IN PIEZOELECTRIC MATERIALS

A mode Ⅲ crack problem in a transversely isotropic piezoelectric material subjected to uniform loads at infinity is studied based on exact boundary conditions. The complex potential approach is used to reduce the problem to Hilbert problem. As a result, closed form field solutions in the piezoelectric material and inside the crack are presented. It is shown that the stresses and electric displacement have square root singularities at the crack tips, but the electric field is uniform everywhere in the material and equal to the remote applied one. It is also found that the electric displacement intensity factor depends on both material properties and the mechanical loads, but not the electric loads. Hence it may be concluded that the electric loads have no influence on the field singularities.
