As embedded systems, in particular processor micro-architectures, have become increasing complex, methods for evaluating system designs before they are implemented in hardware are becoming increasingly important. One such method, instruction-set simulators (ISS) have become essential tools for embedded system research and development. This paper surveys and analyzes the evolution of the ISS, from interpretive ISS to compilation based ISS, we categorize and compare existing techniques, such as just-in-time cache compiled simulation (JIT-CCS) , instruction set compiled simulation (IS-CS). Then discusses architecture description languages employed in the ISS development, and statistically approaches for improving simulation methodology. The strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, including speed, flexibility, retargetbility and easy-of-maintenance are considered. In a concluding section, we discuss our future work including the software architecture of ISS, software reuse, and simulation methodology improvement.
