Rubbing Therapy with Ointment for Patella Strain in 42 Cases

Objective: The clinical effects of rubbing therapy with ointment in treating patella strain were observed. Method: Forty-two cases of patella strain were treated by local rubbing with ointment and the changes of the clinical symptoms were observed. Results: After 3 courses of treatment, the total effective rate was 95.2%.Conclusion: It is indicated that rubbing therapy with ointment has good effects in the treatment of patella strain.

Context: Patellofemoral Pain (PFPS) accounts for up to 25% of knee injuries in sports medicine clinics, with up to 91% of symptoms unresolved after conservative treatment at 5 years. The variability of response to treatment reflects its multi-factorial biomechanical etiologies. Bracing has been utilized to modify patellofemoral kinematics, generally by increasing patellofemoral contact area. The DJO Reaction orthosis is unique in its shock-absorbing elastomeric design, which is created to dissipate peak stress and enhance patellar tracking. Objective: To assess whether the DJO Reaction Brace reduces pain and improves functional outcomes in patients with chronic PFPS. Design: Cohort Series. Setting: Academic Sports Medicine Clinic. Patients: Twenty-two individuals between 18 and 40 years old with chronic patellofemoral pain have failed conservative treatment. Intervention: DJO Reaction Brace. Main Outcome Measures: Kujala Anterior Knee Pain Scale, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score. Results: Seven males and 10 females with an age range of 19 - 39 years old complete the study. At an average follow-up time of 55 days, the Kujala score significantly improves by 9.8%, and KOOS Scores increase by the following statistically significant amounts: symptom 3.2%, pain 10.7%, sports and recreation 12.9%, quality of life 20.2%. Conclusion: The DJO Reaction orthosis reduces knee pain, increases function, and enhances quality of life with individuals with PFPS and is effective in the conservative care of patellofemoral pain syndrome.

Expressing sexuality is an important part of life, whether the person has a spinal cord injury (SCI) or not. This study investigated the sexual activity before and after SCI, the difficulties, and adjustments made by these people in relation to their sexuality. This is a qualitative study conducted with 14 people with SCI through semi-structured interviews, which we analyzed in light of pertinent literature and organized into three themes: sexual activity before and after SCI;difficulties in performing sexual activities;and adjustments in sexual activity after SCI. We conclude that, although there may be many difficulties, with the partner’s support they can get sexual satisfaction and adapt to the new reality. Nonetheless, it is necessary and essential that the patient receive guidance about the possible changes and adaptive methods, and nurses can play a critical role in this process.

The vascular surgeon is trained in the management of diseases affecting all parts of the vascular system except that of the heart and brain whereas cardiothoracic surgeons manage surgical diseases of the heart and its vessels. Although vascular surgery is previously a field within general surgery, it is now considered a specialty on its own right in many countries such as the UK and the United States. Other countries such as Iraq have a mixed practice in which the cardiac or thoracic surgeon performs vascular surgery. Programs of training in vascular surgery are slightly different depending on the region of the world one is in. In the United States, a 5-year general surgery residency is followed by 2 years training in vascular surgery. In Iraq, the time table allocated for the general surgical trainee in vascular surgery is unfortunately short (1 - 3 months). This period is hardly enough for the candidate to grasp the decision-making and technical skills of vascular surgery. We believe that general surgeons need to have adequate training and expertise in vascular surgery particularly in areas and situations lacking this facility to deal with the life- and/or limb-threatening emergencies. This review article aims to orient the general surgical trainee about the scope of vascular surgery and enable them to correctly diagnose and treat common vascular emergencies such as extremity and abdominal vascular injuries (AVI).

VASCULAR TRAUMA IN THE AMAZON REGION: A TWO YEARS CASES REVIEW FROM A SINGLE INSTITUTION

Introduction: Vascular injuries are among the main mechanisms of death in trauma. In Brazil, the general surgeon is in charge of emergencies procedures in most hospitals, but many times these surgeons are not familiarized with more complex vascular surgical techniques that often require a vascular surgeon. Pará State is the most populated one in the Brazilian Amazon region and a single hospital with vascular surgeons permanently on call is available. Objectives: To evaluate demographic data on vascular trauma victims;to establish the mechanism, anatomic location, injury pattern and surgical techniques used to manage the vascular lesions treated at the Metropolitan Emergency Hospital;to ascertain associated non-vascular injuries and victim’s clinical outcome. Methods: Retrospective analysis of medical records of patients treated for vascular injuries from February 2011 to February 2013 at the institution in case. All arterial and venous injuries were analyzed. Patients who were not operated by the vascular surgery team, iatrogenic injuries and those who underwent primary or sustained traumatic amputation were excluded. Results: 173 cases;95.95% were male;54.90% were between 25 and 49 years;penetrating trauma mechanisms were found in 88.44%;lower limb was the most affected topography (41.50%);the most injured vessels were the superficial femoral and ulnar arteries (in 15.75% of cases each) and the superficial femoral vein (17.77 %);autologous vein graft was the most performed technique for arterial repair (36.57%) and ligature was performed in 85.00% of venous trauma;amputation rate was 15.60% and mortality rate was 6.35%. Conclusions: Vascular injuries occurred predominantly in men from 24 to 49 years old;penetrating mechanisms were most frequent;lower limb was the most affected topography;the most frequently injured vessels were the ulnar and superficial femoral arteries and the superficial femoral vein;complete vessel transection was the most common injury pattern;arterial trauma was most frequently treated by a

TREMORS Hold on to your hat!As everyone surely recalls,Shanghai was rocked last month by an earthquake in Pudong.Well,"rocked"may be a bit of an exaggeration,but that 2.0 tremor was enough to wake a fair number of people and startle more than a few dogs when it hit at 1.44am on July 10.No injuries were reported,and authorities were quick to remind everyone that these minor quakes are nothing to wory about.That said,we dread to imagine the sound of 1,000 e-bike alarms going off at once.

This paper used the Hyper Mesh and LS-DYNA software to establish a dummy-seat finite element simulation model. The head, chest and neck injury of the dummy were analyzed respectively in the frontal impact and rear impact. It was indicated that modification of seat was needed to meet the requirements. The simulation results showed that the original model cannot provide effective protection for the occupants and need for structural improvements. According to the simulation results of deformation and stress conditions of the seat parts, the original seat structure was improved and optimized for four improvement schemes, including the structure optimization of the seat side panel, the center hinge, framework under the cushion and the backrest lock. The results indicated that the optimized seat improved the occupant protection performance by reducing occupant damage parameters compared with original seat, which illustrated that the optimization basically met the target.
