BACKGROUND:Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games was the second Games held amid the COVID-19 pandemic.To a certain extent,it has altered the way sporting activities operate.There is a lack of knowledge on injury risk and illness occurrence in elite winter sport athletes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.This study aimed to describe the incidence of injuries and illnesses sustained during the XXIV Olympic Winter Games in Beijing from February 4 to 20,2022.METHODS:We recorded the daily number of injuries and illnesses among athletes reported by Beijing 2022 medical staff in the polyclinic,medical venues,and ambulance.We calculated injury and illness incidence as the number of injuries or illnesses occurring during competition or training,respectively,with incidence presented as injuries/illnesses per 100 athlete-days.RESULTS:In total,2,897 athletes from 91 nations experienced injury or illness.Beijing 2022 medical staff reported 326 injuries and 80 illnesses,equaling 11.3 injuries and 2.8 illnesses per 100 athletes over the 17-day period.Altogether,11%of the athletes incurred at least one injury and nearly 3%incurred at least one illness.The number of injured athletes was highest in the skating sports(n=104),followed by alpine skiing(n=53),ice track(n=37),freestyle skiing(n=36),and ice hockey(n=35),and was the lowest in the Nordic skiing disciplines(n=20).Of the 326 injuries,14(4.3%)led to an estimated absence from training or competition of more than 1 week.A total of 52 injured athletes were transferred to hospitals for further care.The number of athletes with illness(n=80)was the highest for skating(n=33)and Nordic skiing(n=22).A total of 50 illnesses(62.5%)were admitted to the department of dentistry/ophthalmology/otolaryngology,and the most common cause of illness was other causes,including preexisting illness and medicine(n=52,65%).CONCLUSION:Overall,11%of athletes incurred at least one injury during the Games,which is similar to the findings during the Olympic Winter Games in 2014 and 2018.Regarding illness,2%of athlet

Military training is intense,difficult and often dangerous,so all kinds of injuries or diseases frequently occur during training.Most of the previous studies and reviews on military training-related injuries focused on musculoskeletal system,whereas there are no reviews of abdominal injuries and diseases.Although the incidence of military training-related abdominal injuries and diseases is relatively low,the patients’condition is often critical especially in the presence of abdominal organ injury,leading to multiorgan dysfunction syndrome and even death.This paper elaborates on common types of military training-related abdominal injuries and diseases as well as the prevention and treatment measures,which provides some basis for scientific and reasonable training and improvement of medical security.

Pediatric dog bite injuries in the USA: a systematic review

Introduction Dog bites are one of the leading causes of non-fatal emergency room visits in children.These injuries not only cause physical harm but can lead to long-term psychological stress.This study evaluated the current literature related to pediatric dog bite injuries to identify research gaps which should be prioritized to improve a major public health concern.Methods We performed a keyword search of PubMed,Scopus,and OVID Medline databases(January 1980-March 2020)for all published studies focused on dog bite injuries in the pediatric population(≤18 years of age)using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.Results Out of 1859 abstracts screened,43 studies involving 86880 patients were included.Twenty-nine studies were retrospective chart reviews characterizing the epidemiology of dog bites and their associated treatment outcomes;six were prospective cohort studies;two were cross-sectional studies;and six were experimental studies.Synthesized results demonstrate that childreninjuries,with childreninjuries involving the head,neck,and face.Conclusion Studies analyzing the prevention or psychosocial consequences of dog bites injuries are needed.

Dear editor,According to the China’s National Standard Diagnostic Criteria of Occupational Diseases,occupational acute chemical poisoning refers to the short-term exposure of workers to several chemicals during production,resulting in corresponding organ damage.Herein,we report a case of chemical eye injuries and aspiration pneumonia caused by acute chemical poisoning in the chemical industry.

The novel coronavirus disease(COVID-19)has hit the healthcare system worldwide.The risk of severe infection and mortality increases with advancing age,especially in subjects with comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease,hypertension,diabetes,obesity and cancer.Moreover,cardiovascular complications such as myocardial injury,heart failure and thromboembolism are frequently observed in COVID-19 cases,and several biomarkers(troponin,NTpro BNP and D-Dimer)have been identified as prognostic indicators of disease severity and worst outcome.Currently,there is no specific therapy against SARS-Co V-2,although many medications are under investigation.The aim of this review will be to explore the intertwined relationship between COVID-19 disease and the cardiovascular system,focusing on elderly population.The available supportive treatments along with the related concerns in elderly patients,due to their comorbidities and polypharmacotherapy,will be explored.

BACKGROUND Reconstruction of the pelvic ring anatomy in unstable anterior pelvic ring injuries is a significant step to reduce the mortality rate associated with these injuries efficiently.There is a debate on using either an anterior subcutaneous pelvis internal fixator(INFIX)or an anterior supra-acetabular external fixator(EXFIX)to manage an unstable anterior pelvic ring fracture.AIM To compare the functional and radiological outcomes and complications of INFIX vs EXFIX in managing unstable pelvic ring injuries.METHODS A prospective cohort study included 54 patients with unstable pelvic ring fractures.The patients were divided into two groups;the INFIX group,in which 30 cases were fixed by INFIX,and the EXFIX group,in which 24 patients were treated by EXFIX.The average age in the EXFIX group was 31.17 years(16-57 years),while in the INFIX group,it was 34.5 years(17-53 years).The study included 20(66.7%)males and 10(33.3%)females in the INFIX group and 10(41.7%)males and 14(58.3%)females in the EXFIX group.The radiological outcomes were evaluated using Matta and Tornetta's score,and the functional outcomes using the Majeed score.RESULTS The results revealed a statistically significant difference between both groups(P=0.013)regarding radiological outcomes,according to Matta and Tornetta's score in favor of the INFIX group.Sitting,standing,and walking abilities were measured at a 3-mo follow-up visit using Majeed score modules.It was significantly better among the INFIX group than the EXFIX group in all three modules.At the final follow-up,both groups had no statistically significant difference according to the Majeed score;92.35 in the INFIX group and 90.99 in the EXFIX group(P=0.513).A lower surgical site infection rate was noticed in the INFIX group(P=0.007).CONCLUSION Anterior subcutaneous pelvis INFIX is associated with better radiological outcomes and a lower infection rate than anterior supra-acetabular EXFIX in managing patients with unstable anterior pelvic ring fractures.

Objective:The endothelial glycocalyx(eGC)is a dynamic and multicomponent layer of macromolecules found at the surface of vascular endothelium,which is largely underappreciated.It has recently been recognized that eGC is a major regulator of endothelial function and may have therapeutic value in organ injuries.This study aimed to explore the role of the eGC in various pathologic and physiologic conditions,by reviewing the basic research findings pertaining to the detection of the eGC and its clinical significance.We also explored different pharmacologic agents used to protect and rebuild the eGC.Data sources:An in-depth search was performed in the PubMed database,focusing on research published after 2003 with keywords including eGC,permeability,glycocalyx and injuries,and glycocalyx protection.Study selection:Several authoritative reviews and original studies were identified and reviewed to summarize the characteristics of the eGC under physiologic and pathologic conditions as well as the detection and protection of the eGC.Results:The eGC degradation is closely associated with pathophysiologic changes such as vascular permeability,edema formation,mechanotransduction,and clotting cascade,together with neutrophil and platelet adhesion in diverse injury and disease states including inflammation(sepsis and trauma),ischemia-reperfusion injury,shock,hypervolemia,hypertension,hyperglycemia,and high Na+as well as diabetes and atherosclerosis.Therapeutic strategies for protecting and rebuilding the eGC should be explored through experimental test and clinical verifications.Conclusions:Disturbance of the eGC usually occurs at early stages of various clinical pathophysiologies which can be partly prevented and reversed by protecting and restoring the eGC.The eGC seems to be a promising diagnostic biomarker and therapeutic target in clinical settings.

Purpose: Un displaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries are easy to miss or underestimate, and many cases are treated without surgical fixation. It has not yet widely known whether conservative treatment for undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injuries may lead to a poor outcome. The purpose of this study is to compare the outcomes of conservative versus surgical management (percutaneous position screw) of undisplaced subtle ligamentous Lisfranc injury. Methods: We analysed 61 cases in this retrospective study, including 38 males and 23 females. Forty-one patients were managed conservatively, while 20 patients received surgical treatment involving minimal invasive percutaneous pos让ion screw. American orthopaedic foot &ankle society (AOFAS), foot function index (FFI, including FFI disability, FFl pain score and activity limitation scale) scores, Maryland foot score and short form-36 (SF-36) were recorded and compared after a follow-up of 10-16 months (average 12.3). Results: Patients in the surgical management group had higher scores in all evaluation methods (p injuries. This study can serve as a resource for orthopaedic surgeons in recog nizing and man aging such injuries.
