Exhaust hood performance and its improvement technologies in industrial buildings:A literatu rereview

The pollutant control performance of exhaust hoods plays a crucial role in the indoor air quality and energy consumption of ventilation systems in industrial buildings.To better understand the impact of local ventilation on the industrial indoor environment,this paper presents a literature review of exhaust hood performance and its improvement technologies.To create an index for evaluating the performance of exhaust hoods,the capture velocity,capture efficiency,flow ratio of pollutant emissions and exhaust airflow and energy consumption are first introduced.A number of factors affecting exhaust hood performance are assessed such as hood type,hood opening size,exhaust rate,installation distance,pollution source emission and environmental disturbance.Compared to structural improvement methods,the use of active airflow is a more effective way to improve the exhaust hood performance.The most commonly used methods for determining the exhaust rate are the controlled speed method and the flow ratio method.The use of an exhaust hood with an appropriate exhaust rate and jet parameters(for an active air-assisted hood)can effectively improve the pollutant control performance and reduce the energy consumption that would be wasted on the redundant exhaust rate.With more information focused on exhaust hood performance,this work suggests more effective strategies for improving indoor air quality and reducing energy consumption in industrial buildings.

Spatio-temporal distribution of gaseous pollutants from multiple sources in industrial buildings with different flow patterns

Energy consumption of industrial buildings has remained continuously high,and the environmental quality requirements are also constantly improving.Only by improving industrial environmental control technology based on the transport mechanism of the pollution,can the energy consumption of industrial building environmental control be further reduced,and the environmental quality of industrial buildings can be improved as well.Therefore,after verifying the numerical simulation by experiments,this study uses a self-label method to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of gaseous pollutants from multiple time-series sources in industrial plants with different length-span ratios.The results show that,the polluted flow in plants with different aspect ratios have different flow patterns:(i)the,,Back-mixingw flow pattern occurs when the ratio of ventilation rate 6 and polluted flow rate at the exhaust height b is less than 1,i.e.,G/L_(p)1.For plants with the"Back-mixing"pattern,the following source pollutants enter a density stratified environment induced by the retained pre-source pollutants.The flow of following source pollutants released at the same intensity as the precursor source can reach the roof,while those with low velocity and density difference may be blocked during the ascending process.The maximum height zm of the flow of the following source is related to both the initial Froude number Fr_(o)of the following source and the unsteady vertical density gradient of the fluid in the indoor environment dpa/dz.For plants with the,,One-way,/pattern,the flow from the following source enters into an environment with approximately uniform density.Under the condition of positive buoyancy,design parameters of ventilation corresponding to the vicinity of G/L_(p)=1 may be the optimal solution for safety and energy conservation.

Numerical study on the integrated effects of supplied air velocity and exhaust velocity on particles removal for industrial buildings

Due to production particularity in industrial buildings,high concentrations of particulate matter are always im-portant environmental issues.Long-term exposure to such hazardous environment may lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.Mechanical ventilation plays a vital role in reducing indoor particulate matter concen-trations.However,the current industrial ventilation generally has the disadvantage of low ventilation efficiency and high energy consumption.In this study,we proposed a ventilation design by integrating supply and exhaust ventilation(i.e.,SEV),and further investigated the effects of combined velocities on both indoor particles re-moval and energy efficiency.Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)coupled with Discrete Phase Model(DPM)was employed.The RNG k-𝜀model was adopted to simulate airflow field.Lagrangian method was used to trace particles’dispersion processes.A series of cases were conducted under ventilated conditions with combinations of different supplied velocities of 0.75,1.12,1.50 and 1.87 m/s,and exhausted velocities of 0,0.28 and 0.56 m/s.Temperature effects were not considered in this work.The quantification of combined effects of supply velocity and exhaust velocity were investigated in terms of particle removal efficiency as well as energy saving.Results showed that combined effects of supply velocity and exhaust velocity can improve the ventilation efficiency by 20%-40%compared to the conventional supply ventilation without exhaust velocity.Moreover,the reasonable design of integrated velocities will save up to 70%energy while keeping the same ventilation efficiency of SEV.These findings will be of great importance for energy-efficient design for industrial ventilation systems.
