Statistical estimations for Plasmodium vivax malaria in South Korea

Objective:To calculate the numbers of weekly infections and prevalence of malaria,and to predict future trend of malaria incidences in South Korea.Methods:Weekly incidences of malaria for 13 years from the period 2001-2013 in South Korea were analyzed.The backcalculation equations were used with incubation period distributions.The maximum likelihood estimation for Poisson model was also used.The confidence intervals of the estimates were obtained by a bootstrap method.A regression model for time series of malaria incidences over13 years was fitted by the non-linear least squares method,and used to predict futuretrend.Results:The estimated infection curve is narrower and more concentrated in the summer than in the incidence distribution.Infection started around the 19 th week and was over around the41 st week.The maximum weekly infection 110 was obtained at the 29 th week.The prevalence at the first week was around 496 persons,the minimum number was 366 at 22 nd week,and the maximum prevalence was 648 at 34 th week.Prevalence drops in late spring with people that falling ill and had had long incubation periods and rose in the summer with new infections.Our future forecast based on the regression model was that an increase at year 2014 compared to 2013 may reach a peak(at maximum about 70 weekly cases) at year 2015.with a decreasing trend after then.Conclusions:This work shows that back-calculation methods could work well in estimating the infection rates and the prevalence of malaria.The obtained results can be useful in establishing an efficient preventive program for malaria infection.The method presented here can be used in other countries where incidence data and incubation period are available.

The breeding biology of Red-Whiskered Bulbul(Pycnonotus jocosus) in Xishuangbanna, southwest China

To fill the gap in breeding biology information about the Red-Whiskered Bulbul （Pycnonotus jocosus）, in 2013, we studied the breeding biology of this species in Xishuangbanna, southwest China. The breeding began from February and continued until early August. The breeding strategy of P. jocosus was more flexible and their nests were only built in cultivated landscapes, whereas, no nest building in native tropical rain forest was found. Small open cup nests were built on 50 different plant species, and at heights ranging from 2.1±0.6 m above the ground （n=102）. The mean clutch size was 2.53±0.51 eggs （n=40） and the mean egg mass was 2.81±0.25 g （n=60）. The average incubation period was 11.1±0.5 days （n=14）, and the average nestling period was 11.0±0.8 days （n=31）. The overall nest success was 34.22%.The hatching and fledging showed either asynchrony or synchrony. Invertebrate food decreased with nestling age, whereas, plant food increased with nestling age. Moreover, distinct parental roles of the parents in nestling period were found. Compared with other passerine species, P. jocosus spent less time in incubating （58%）. The clutch size, incubation and nestling period of the P. jocosus in southwest China were different from those of the R jocosus in India.

Effects of Rice Straw and Its Biochar Addition on Soil Labile Carbon and Soil Organic Carbon

Whether the biochar amendment could affect soil organic matter （SOM） turnover and hence soil carbon （C） stock remains poorly understood. Effects of the addition of ^13C-labelled rice straw or its pyrolysed biochar at 250 or 350℃ to a sugarcane soil （Ferrosol） on soil labile C （dissolved organic C, DOC; microbial biomass C, MBC; and mineralizable C, MC） and soil organic C （SOC） were investigated after 112 d of laboratory incubation at 25℃. Four treatments were examined as （1） the control soil without amendment （Soil）; （2） soil plus ^13C-labelled rice straw （Soil＋Straw）; （3） soil plus 250℃ biochar （Soil＋B250） and （4） soil plus 350℃biochar （Soil＋B350）. Compared to un-pyrolysed straw, biochars generally had an increased aryl C, carboxyl C, C and nitrogen concentrations, a decreased O-alkyl C and C：N ratio, but similar alkyl C and δ^13C （1 742- 1 877 %）. Among treatments, significant higher DOC, MBC and MC derived from the new C （straw or biochar） ranked as Soil＋Straw〉Soil＋B250〉Soil＋B350, whilst significant higher SOC from the new C as Soil＋B250〉Soil＋Straw≈Soil＋B350. Compared to Soil, DOC and MBC derived from the native soil were decreased under straw or biochar addition, whilst MC from the native soil was increased under straw addition but decreased under biochar addition. Meanwhile, native SOC was similar among the treatments, irrespective of the straw or biochar addition. Compared to Soil, significant higher total DOC and total MBC were under Soil＋Straw, but not under Soil＋B250 and Soil＋B350, whilst significant higher total MC and total SOC were under straw or biochar addition, except for MC under Soil＋B350. Our results demonstrated that the application of biochar to soil may be an appropriate management practice for increasing soil C storage.

Effects of rice husk biochar on selected soil properties and nitrate leaching in loamy sand and clay soil

Biochar is a product of pyrolysis of biomass in the absence of oxygen and has a high potential to sequester carbon into more stable soil organic carbon (OC).Despite the large number of studies on biochar and soil properties,few studies have investigated the effects of biochar in contrasting soils.The current research was conducted to evaluate the effects of different biochar levels (0 (as control),1% and 3%) on several soil physiochemical properties and nitrate leaching in two soil types (loamy sand and clay)under greenhouse conditions and wet-dry cycles.The experiment was performed using a randomized design with three levels of biochar produced from rice husks at 500 ℃ in three replications.Cation exchange capacity increased significantly,by 20% and 30% in 1% and 3% biochar-amended loamy sand soil,respectively,and increases were 9% and 19% in 1% and 3% biochar-amended clay soil,respectively.Loamy sand soil did not show improvement in aggregate indices,including mean weight diameter,geometric mean diameter,water stable aggregates and fractal dimension,which was contrary to the results for the clay soil.Rice husk biochar application at the both rates decreased nitrate leaching in the clay soil more than in the loamy sand.Our study highlights the importance of soil type in determining the value of biochar as a soil amendment to improve soil properties,particularly soil aggregation and reduced nitrate leaching.The benefits of the biochar in the clay soil were greater than in the loamy sand soil.

This study assessing the infestation rate of fruit fly species on Solanum aethiopicum,Solanum lycopersicum,and Capsicum spp,using incubation method,was conducted in Agricultural entomology laboratory of Research Centre in Natural Sciences(CRSN)Lwiro,at Kabare in The South Kivu Province in eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.Five species of Tephritidae flies observed,i.e.Bactrocera dorsalis,B.latifrons,Dacus bivitatus,Ceratitis capitata,and Zeugodacus Cucurbitae.The highest infestation rate was observed on B.dorsalis and following C.capitata in those solanaceous chilli pepper(C.frutescens),eggplant(S.aethiopicum)and tomato(S.lycopersicum)than Z.cucurbitae,B.latifrons and D.bivittatus.However,the localities Kamakombe,Buhandahanda,Lwiro,Bishibiru have predominant in the majority of hosts in chilli pepper,eggplant and tomato.

Forgetting In Creative Problem Solving for College Students

As more and more benefits of forgetting have been found in recent studies,whether forgetting could promote individuals ability of creative problem solving remains a controversial debate.This article discusses the effect of two types of forgetting,the retrieval-induced forgetting(RIF)and the forgetting during incubation,in benefiting creative problem solving by introducing and analysing the relevant experiments.The results reveal that retrieval-induced forgetting only works when previous mental fixations occurred and the promotion varies when solving different types of problems.The level of RIF is irrelevant to the performance in solving closed-ended creative problems and high level of RIF even impairs the creativity when solving open-ended problems.And forgetting during incubation cannot explain the incubation effect.The spreading activation of relevant information or the unconscious work is more likely to be the possible reasons.In conclusion,the current article brings about the discussions about the work conditions and effects of forgetting in creative problem solving.

Visible Light and Its Influence on the Embryonic Viability of the Cricket Acheta domesticus

During in vitro fertilization, human embryos are incubated without light, and these conditions do not ensure embryo survival. This study explored whether environmental conditions can influence the embryo viability rates of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus. In particular, the experiment tested what colors of visible light provide the best incubation conditions to ensure cricket embryo viability. The concept was to use house cricket embryos to represent human embryos. Cricket embryos were chosen as their eggs have soft outer membrane casings and resemble human embryos during the first few days after fertilization. During the experiment, the adult crickets laid their eggs into one of six soil-filled boxes called substrates. Each substrate was placed into one of six storage containers filled with adult crickets and lit with a different colored visible light (red, yellow, green, blue, white, or no light). After two days of breeding, the egg-filled substrates were removed from the adult crickets and placed in another storage container of the same color light. After incubation under heat-emitting lamps and under one of six light colors, nymphs were counted after hatching to determine embryo viability. After three trials, the red light provided the significantly highest viability rate, with yellow and no light being comparable seconds. The green, blue, and white lights showed significantly lower viability rates than no visible light. My results raise the speculation that exposing fertilized mammal eggs to visible light colors might have the same effects during the in vitro fertilization process.

Calibration of CO<sub>2</sub>Trapping in Alkaline Solutions during Soil incubation at Varying Temperatures Using a Respicond VI

Measurements of carbon dioxide (CO2)-evolution from soils are important in evaluating biomass and activity of soil microorganisms, as well as decomposition of soil organic matter. The Respicond VI is a fully computerized system allowing continuous measurement of CO2 evolution in short- and long-term soil incubation experiments in up to 96 incubation vessels. The measurement of CO2 evolution is based on the absorption of CO2 by an electrolyte (KOH solution) producing a change in the cell conductance measured using two electrodes. In this study, the Respicond VI was recalibrated yielding 174.5 mg CO2 as constant A expressing the theoretical maximum amount of CO2 absorbed in 10 ml 0.5 M KOH. This value of A corresponds to 34.9 mg CO2 ml-1 1 M KOH. The constant A does neither depend on the investigated incubation temperatures (5°C - 25°C) nor on the concentrations of the KOH solutions (0.5, 0.1, 0.05 M KOH). To eliminate any influence of changing incubation temperatures, either induced by uncertainties in temperature control or as a part of the experimental setup, on the conductance of KOH solution, a correction procedure was developed using a factor calculated from changing conductance of KOH solutions in incubation vessels without soil.

Molecular mechanism of diapause in insect (I) --Expression of diapause hormone gene and incubation temperature in embryonic stage of Bombyx mori

The embryonic diapause of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, is induced by the diapause hormone (DH) which is secreted from the suboesophageal ganglion of pupae. The diapause nature of bivoltine strains uses environmental stimuli as the initial signal to determine the diapause nature. The experiments showed that DH gene expression is a direct response to the environmental stimulus, such as high incubation temperature. The cDNA from the embryonic stage was cloned and sequence analysis showed the cDNA encoding DH. Expression patterns of the DH gene in embryonic stage are different at incubation temperatures 15℃ and 25℃, suggesting that the incubation temperature as an environmental signal is kept within the body to control the DH gene expression at the pupal stage, so that the embryonic diapause of next generation can be determined.

Effects of Organic Manures in Changes of Some Soil Properties at Different incubation Periods

A laboratory incubation experiment of 60 days was carried out to observe the changes of soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic carbon (SOC), and potassium chloride extractable nitrogen () in a soil to which three animal manures viz. cow dung (CD), chicken manure (CM) and a combination of CD and CM had been applied at a rate of 10 t·ha-1. The effects of manures varied with manure type and incubation period. Soil pH slightly increased with the incubation period up to 30 days there after it declined with time significantly (p incubation increased. Organic carbon contents of manure treated soils reached its peak at 15 days of incubation and decreased thereafter with time. The content of increased significantly (p incubation period increased in control and cow dung amended soils whereas there was no significant difference in contents when either chicken manure alone or cow dung and chicken manure mixed in combination. After 60 days of incubation, the highest amount of was found in cow dung plus chicken manure treated soil followed by chicken manure treatment.
