Dynamic crack propagation in plates weakened by nclined cracks:an investigation based on peridynamics

Peridynamics is a theory in solid mechanics that uses integral equations instead of partial differential equations as governing equations. It can be applied to fracture problems in contrast to the approach of fracture mechanics. In this paper by using peridynamics, the crack path for inclined crack under dynamic loading were investigated. The peridynamics solution for this problem represents the main features of dynamic crack propagation such as crack bifurcation. The problem is solved for various angles and different stress values. In addition, the influence of geometry on inclined crack growth is studied. The results are compared with molecular dynamic solutions that seem to show reasonable agreement in branching position and time.

Background, Motivation and Objective With an increasing awareness of the importance of damage prognosis systems in aerospace, mechanical and civil structures, Structural Health Monitoring(SHM) has been received much attention that holds great potential to enable condition-based maintenance and safely prolong the useful life of structures. Traditional ultrasonic testing techniques, which are based on the bulk waves, are very time consuming, since they need an overall inspection of the structure. However, lamb waves, which correspond to guided ultrasonic perturbations, have the ability for waves to propagate over long distances and to interrogate the entire thickness of the plate. Thus, lamb waves make it possible to be quickly inspected for structural defects such as cracks, disbands and corrosions for large-area plate-like structures like aircraft fuselages and ship hulls. Due to this advantage, the prediction of the scattering of Lamb waves from damage has been one of the major focus for researchers in SHM. But, it is a big challenge to solute the scattering problem for the existence of multiple dispersive modes of Lamb waves at any frequency along with mode conversion at the damage location. Therefore, well-developed numerical methods such as the finite element method(FEM) have been popular. However, commercial FEM codes, which are also time consuming, do not provide much insight of the wave field in the structure, especially near the damage location. Thus, researchers are more looking forward to seek high efficiency simulation methods such as hybridization of the three methods: the FEM, the boundary element method and normal mode expansion. However, these approaches are hard to apply to a geometric discontinuity problem such as the crack problem. In this study, we use another analytical method to investigate lamb wave scattering by a symmetric pair of surface-breaking inclined crack in a plate.
