The United States Navy has embarked on a program to bring real-time oil analysis results to shipboard Sailors to allowthem the ability to monitor equipment health and make maintenance *** Navy’s Automated oil analysis program puts insitu,oil condition and debris monitors in running machinery to perform these functions with the goal of eliminating manpowerassociated with oil sampling as well as to provide real-time tracking and trending of equipment *** Navy first established a lube oil quality management program for aviation engines in the 1960’s after a correlation was shownbetween wear metals in oil and equipment *** equipment was added to the program in the 1970’s to monitorequipment oil quality and to attempt to determine equipment impending failures before they became *** Navy recentlyreexamined its practice of sending onboard oil samples to a lab and moved away from this long-term program not because it didn’twork or didn’t have value,but because the program as executed failed to provide results in a timely enough manner to prove usefulfor shipboard equipment and maintenance *** the Naval Sea Systems Command’s program Capital Investment for Labor Reduction (CILabor),the Navy has procured,tested,and installed three separate systems in three ships to evaluate the usefulness and effectiveness of in-line systems inconditionbased maintenance at *** paper discusses the process,installation and benefits derived during the program as well asthe expected *** paper also discusses what the next steps are in the program and how the Navy intends to pursue them toreach its goal of performing maintenance based on condition.
