A numerical simulation framework to address the problem of the interaction of moving and/or deformable slender object(s) within an incompressible fluid flow is proposed. In this work, the finite element method(FEM) for structural dynamics simulation is introduced in immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method(IB-LBM). The variant immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method proposed by Shu et al.is referred, which satisfies the non-slip boundary condition well at the boundary point. In this framework, the fluid and solid domains are both encompassed by Cartesian uniform lattices. The deforming/moving objects are divided into several elements, which nodes are set as Lagrangian markers to track the boundary of structure in immersed boundary method. At each simulation step, by using the law of conservation of momentum at each Lagrangian boundary point, the loads acting on the structure in IB-LBM are obtained first. Then, the loads are used in structural kinetic equations to calculate the displacement and velocity of Lagrangian boundary point, which will be brought back into IB-LBM for the next iteration. Compared to other lattice Boltzmann–immersed boundary method proposed, which can only solve the specific fluid-structure interaction problems, the framework proposed in this article is more general because of its’ strong modeling capability by introducing FEM. Here, nonlinear FEM solver was developed to account for geometrical and material non-linearity of flexible objects. Four cases were used to validate capability of this framework. In the first case, we consider the laminar incompressible channel flow around a flexible filament clamped behind a rigid stationary cylinder which results in self-induced oscillations of the structure. The results agree very well with available data in the literature. The beating of tandem filaments induced by the fluidstructure interaction was investigated. Numerical Simulation on Partially Liquid-Filled Sloshing with Baffle Under Different Density Ratios by the CLSVOF/IB Method

The density and viscosity ratios on partially liquid-filled sloshing with baffle have been investigated numerically in this study.As the key to success in the present simulation,the Coupled Level Set and the Volume of Fluid(CLSVOF)method and the immersed boundary(IB)method are used to capture gas/liquid and fluid/structure interfaces,respectively.Within the CLSVOF method,surface normal in weighting factors is calculated by the level set function,resulting in a more accurate solution.Furthermore,the Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing(THINC)coupled with the Weighted Linear Interface Calculation(WLIC)scheme is used for capturing moving interface.As a standard practice,we first validate the code by comparing it with experimental results of liquid sloshing,which involves large deformation of interface.In addition to the validation study of the present method,the problems of liquid sloshing with baffle are investigated to understand kinematics and dynamics behaviors under different density and viscosity ratios.

Computing Viscous Flow in an Elastic Tube

We have developed a numerical method for simulating viscous flow through a compliant closed tube,driven by a pair of fluid source and sink.As is natural for tubular flow simulations,the problem is formulated in axisymmetric cylindrical coordinates,with fluid flow described by the Navier-Stokes equations.Because the tubular walls are assumed to be elastic,when stretched or compressed they exert forces on the fluid.Since these forces are singularly supported along the boundaries,the fluid velocity and pressure fields become unsmooth.To accurately compute the solution,we use the velocity decomposition approach,according to which pressure and velocity are decomposed into a singular part and a remainder part.The singular part satisfies the Stokes equations with singular boundary forces.Because the Stokes solution is unsmooth,it is computed to second-order accuracy using the immersed interface method,which incorporates known jump discontinuities in the solution and derivatives into the finite difference stencils.The remainder part,which satisfies the Navier-Stokes equations with a continuous body force,is regular.The equations describing the remainder part are discretized in time using the semi-Lagrangian approach,and then solved using a pressure-free projection method.Numerical results indicate that the computed overall solution is secondorder accurate in space,and the velocity is second-order accurate in time.

Red blood cell partitioning and blood flux redistribution in microvascular bifurcation

This paper studies red blood cell （RBC） partitioning and blood flux redistribution in microvascular bifurcation by immersed boundary and lattice Boltzmann method. The effects of the initial position of RBC at low Reynolds number regime on the RBC deformation, RBC partitioning, blood flux redistribution and pressure distribution are discussed in detail. It is shown that the blood flux in the daughter branches and the initial position of RBC are important for RBC partitioning. RBC tends to enter the higher-flux-rate branch if the initial position of RBC is near the center of the mother vessel. The RBC may enter the lower-flux-rate branch if it is located near the wall of mother vessel on the lower-flux-rate branch side. Moreover, the blood flux is redistributed when an RBC presents in the daughter branch. Such redistribution is caused by the pressure distribution and reduces the superiority of RBC entering the same branch. The results obtained in the present work may provide a physical insight into the understanding of RBC partitioning and blood flux redistribution in microvascular bifurcation.
