Spatial differences of ice volume across High Mountain Asia

Advanced knowledge of glacier ice volume is vital for water resource *** studies have focused on the estimation of ice volume,but the quantitative understanding of the spatial variability of ice volume across High Mountain regions is currently ***,we used global-scale ice thickness,debris cover and equilibrium line data to analyse ice-volume differences at various scales across High Mountain Asia(HMA).The results showed that 6.3%of the HMA glaciers are covered by debris,with debris area and volume accounting for 9%and 13.8%of the total glacier area and volume,*** average debris-cover volume ratio of 13%was *** spatial distribution of ice volume across the HMA varies considerably from region to *** ice volume is predominately distributed on north-facing slopes and accounts for approximately 38%of the *** is very common in Altay and Sayan,East Tian Shan,West Kunlun,East Kunlun and Qilian ***,ice volumes in the Himalayas and Hengduan Shan are mainly distributed on the southeast *** weight functions showed that glacier area,maximum length and average thickness are closely related to ice volume,with average relative weights of 63.7%,22.5%and 9.8%,*** study is important for the evolution of glacier volume and water resource assessment.

Glacier volume Calculation from ice-Thickness Data for Mountain Glaciers—A Case Study of Glacier No. 4 of Sigong River over Mt. Bogda, Eastern Tianshan, Central Asia

The determination of total glacial volume is important for the observation of climatic change and its consequences such as global sea-level rise. The tongue area of Glacier No. 4 of Sigong River over Mt. Bogda, eastern Tianshan was surveyed by ground-penetrating radar （GPR） and real time kinematic （RTK）-global positioning system （GPS） during the summer campaign 2009. In order to calculate the glacier volume, both co-kriging algorithm and estimation based on the theory of perfectly plastic material were employed. Results indicated that the ice-thickness distribution of the investigated glacier ranges from 0 to 105.0 m, with the mean thickness of 27.6 m in 2009. The corresponding ice volume was -0.076 km3 （-0.068 km3 water equivalent）. The bedrock topography shows more undulating than the glacier surface. The difference of the calculated ice volume in this study and the estimated value from the empirical formula is large. Therefore, it is urgent to validate the applicability of the ex- isting empirical formula.

Knowledge of the interactions among atmospheric dynamics,dust emissions and climate system is essential to understand the physical mechanisms for the dust lifecycle,their role in loess formation as well as the predictions of future dust ***,these issues still remain relatively poorly known in Central Asia(CA).The extensive loess deposits on the CA pediments provide a promising archive to explore atmospheric dust dynamics and climatic conditions in the past and their association with loess *** study investigates the granulometric and magnetic properties of a loess section(named Osh section)in the Fergana Valley,which provides a sensitive record of atmospheric dust dynamics since 30 ka based on radiometric(AMS ^(14)C)*** frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility(χfd)and the mean grain size are used to reconstruct the broadscale effective moisture and summer atmospheric dynamics pattern in CA,*** results show that the precession forcing exerts a huge influence on the wind-regime variabilities in CA,but with different physical processes under the impact of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheet(NHIS)before and after 15 *** origin of the sedimentation rate variations in the Osh loess is also linked to the NHIS-modulated changes of the atmospheric circulation *** the strengthened westerlies or the increased surface roughness from higher vegetation cover in loess-deposition areas have significantly accelerated the loess *** a result,these complicated influence factors of sedimentation rate change in the Osh loess section,especially during the Holocene epoch,may hamper accessibility of the authentic dust emission flux and atmospheric dust concentration in CA.
