hyperplasia vs hypertrophy in tissue regeneration after extensive liver resection

To address to what extent hypertrophy and hyperplasia contribute to liver mass restoration after major tissue *** ability of the liver to regenerate is remarkable on both clinical and biological grounds. Basic mechanisms underlying this process have been intensively investigated. However, it is still debated to what extent hypertrophy and hyperplasia contribute to liver mass restoration after major tissue loss. We addressed this issue using a genetically tagged system. We were able to follow the fate of single transplanted hepatocytes during the regenerative response elicited by 2/3 partial surgical hepatectomy (PH) in rats. Clusters of transplanted cells were 3D reconstructed and their size distribution was evaluated over time after *** size and liver DNA content were largely recovered 10 d post-PH, as expected (e.g., total DNA/liver/100 g b.w. was 6.37 ± 0.21 before PH and returned to 6.10 ± 0.36 10 d after PH). Data indicated that about 2/3 of the original residual hepatocytes entered S-phase in response to PH. Analysis of cluster size distribution at 24, 48, 96 h and 10 d after PH revealed that about half of the remnant hepatocytes completed at least 2 cell cycles. Average size of hepatocytes increased at 24 h (248.50 μm2 ± 7.82 μm2, P = 0.0015), but returned to control values throughout the regenerative process (up to 10 d post-PH, 197.9 μm2 ± 6.44 μm2, P = 0.11). A sizeable fraction of the remnant hepatocyte population does not participate actively in tissue mass *** stands as the major mechanism contributing to liver mass restoration after PH, with hypertrophy playing a transient role in the process.

Does prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA mass improve the accuracy of predicting total prostate volume in relation to obesity in men with biopsy-proven benign prostatic hyperplasia?

We evaluated whether the prostate-specific antigen (PSA)mass or free PSA (fPSA)mass (i.e.,absolute amount of total circulating PSA or fPSA protein,respectively),versus serum PSA or fPSA concentration,improves the accuracy of predicting the total prostate volume (TPV)in relation to *** men whose multicore (≥12)transrectal prostate biopsy was negative,586 who had a PSA of <10 ng ml^-1 and underwent the fPSA test prior to biopsy were *** PSA mass or fPSA mass (pg)was calculated by multiplying the serum level by plasma *** each TPV cut-off point (30 ml,40 ml,and 50 ml),the areas under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUCs)of each variable were compared in obesity-based *** of fPSA and fPSA mass for predicting TPV were significantly larger than those for PSA and PSA mass by 8.7%-12.1%at all cut-off points. Subgroup analyses based on obesity showed that,although PSA mass and fPSA mass enhanced accuracy by 4%(P =0.031)and 1.8%(P =0.003),respectively,for determining TPVs of ≥30 ml and ≥50 ml in obese and overweight men,they did not improve the accuracy in most other combinations of the degrees of obesity with TPV cut-off ***,compared with serum PSA or fPSA,the absolute amount of PSA or fPSA protein mass improved the accuracy of predicting TPV in obese men very minimally and only for certain TPV cut-off ***,these indicators may not provide clinically meaningful improvement in predicting TPV in obese men.

Value and influencing factors of valid Traditional Chinese Medicine compound prescription patents for mammary gland hyperplasia

OBJECTIVE: To explore the value and factors influencing the maintenance of valid Traditional Chinese Medicine compound prescription patents for the management of mammary gland hyperplasia. METHODS: The State Intellectual Property Office Patents Database, China Patent Information Center Patents Database, Soopat Patent Search Platform, and CNIPR Search Platform of Chinese and Foreign Patent Database were searched to identify Traditional Chinese Medicine compound prescription patents for mammary gland hyperplasia that had been maintained for at least 5 years. Logistic regression analysis was used to detect the factors influencing the maintenance of valid patents. RESULTS: From 1 January 1993 to 31 December 2019, a total of 1228, Traditional Chinese Medicine compound prescription patents for mammary gland hyperplasia were authorized. Of these applications, 381 patents were granted and only 176 patents were maintained for more than 5 years. The five independent variables assessed in this study all had significant explanatory functions. CONCLUSIONS: The maintenance of valid patents for Traditional Chinese Medicine compound prescriptions for treating mammary gland hyperplasia is of great importance. The maintenance of such patents depends on many factors, such as the concentration of effective herbs, number of dependent claims, provision of new dosage forms and detailed experimental data, and transfer of patent rights.

Efficacy of Lubeikangru formulation in mice with hyperplasia of the mammary glands induced by estrogen and progesterone

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the protective effects of Lubeikangru formula(LF) on hyperplasia of the mammary glands(HMG) induced by estrogen and progesterone in ***: Female mice were divided randomly into five groups: normal, model, tamoxifen(3 mg/kg),Rupixiao(900 mg/kg) and LF(900 mg/kg). All mice except those in the normal group were treated sequentially with estradiol and progesterone to induce HMG. From the tenth day of induction, mice in normal and model groups received distilled water and mice in the other groups were given the corresponding drugs by gavage, once a day, for 30 *** the end of treatment, the mammary glands, ovaries, hypothalamus, and serum was collected for whole-mount and hematoxylin and eosin(HE)staining, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays(ELISAs), or western ***: Whole-mount and HE staining of mammary glands showed that LF rescued(at least in part) the hyperplasic morphology of the mammary glands, and the number of branch points decreased after LF treatment(P hyperplasia by adjusting hormone levels and regulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway.

Dear Editor, We would like to present a rare case of giant prostatic hyperplasia （GPH）, which is defined as a prostate weight over 200g for Easterners or 500 g for Westerns.： Only 14 cases of GPH exceeding 500 g had been reported in the English literature by 2015 （Supplementary Table 1）. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of removing a GPH exceeding 500 g by using minimally invasive laparoscopic technique.

Nodular regenerative hyperplasia related portal hypertension in a patient with hypogammaglobulinaemia

Nodular regenerative hyperplasia (NRH) of liver is a relatively rare liver disorder, but a frequent cause of noncirrhotic portal hypertension. We present a lady with common variable immune deficiency who presented with upper gastrointestinal bleeding and deranged liver function tests but preserved synthetic function. Upper gastrointestinal endoscope showed bleeding gastric varices and non-bleeding oesophageal varices. Although her oesophageal varices were eradicated by repeated endoscopic band ligation, the gastric varices failed to resolve after repeated endoscopic histocryl injection and she eventually needed transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt placement. Liver biopsy showed NRH. We review the association of hypogammaglobinaemia and NRH and discuss the appropriate management of portal hypertension in NRH.

Focal nodular hyperplasia coexistent with hepatoblastoma in a 36-d-old infant

Focal nodular hyperplasia(FNH) is a benign hepatic tumor characterized by hepatocyte hyperplasia and a central stellate *** association of FNH with other hepatic lesions,such as adenomas,hemangiomas and hepatocellular carcinoma,has been previously reported,but FNH associated with another hepatic tumor is rare in *** we report a case of FNH coexistentwith hepatoblastoma in a 36-d-old *** tomography(CT) imaging showed an ill-delineated,inhomogeneous enhanced mass with a central star-like scar in the right lobe of the *** tumor showed early mild enhancement at the arterial phase(from 40 HU without contrast to 52 HU at the arterial phase),intense enhancement at the portal phase(87.7HU) and 98.1HU in the 3-min delay scan.A central scar in the tumor presented as low density on non-contrast CT and slightly enhanced at delayed contrast-enhanced *** infant underwent surgical resection of the *** demonstrated typical FNH coexistent with a focal hepatoblastoma,which showed epithelioid tumor cells separated by proliferated fibrous tissue.
