Background Although hydrostatic reduction of intussusception with ultrasound(US)or fluoroscopy guidance is well known,it is not yet well established in many low-income and middle-income countries.The aim of the study is to report our results of hydrostatic reduction with intermittent radiography,which has the potential to be practiced in resource-limited settings.Methods We retrospectively analyzed our patients with intussusception from 2009 to 2019(11 years).hydrostatic reduction was performed using water-soluble contrast medium(iopamidol),and reduction was followed with intermittent X-rays taken after every 50 mL of diluted contrast injection.The procedure was not continuously monitored by US or fluoroscopy.Differences in outcome based on age and gender,and yearly trends of admission for intussusception,types of treatment and mortality were analyzed.Results Among 672 patients,the ratio of boys to girls was 2.46:1.0,and their ages ranged from 1 month to 15 years(median 8 months).hydrostatic reduction was performed successfully in 351(52.23%)patients;308(45.83%)patients underwent surgery;and 13(1.93%)patients died before any intervention.There were significant differences in age between patients with successful hydrostatic reduction(median 7 months)and patients needing surgery(median 9 months)(phydrostatic reductions increased during the 11 years of the study(R2=0.88).One patient(0.15%)died after hydrostatic reduction,and 10(1.49%)died after surgery.Conclusion hydrostatic reduction with intermittent radiography was performed successfully in more than half of the patients with acceptable complication rates.

Non-hydrostatic versus hydrostatic modelings of free surface flows

The hydrodynamics of geophysical flows in oceanic shelves, estuaries, and rivers are often studied by solving shallow water equations under either hydrostatic or non-hydrostatic assumptions. Although the hydrostatic models are quite accurate and cost-efficient for many practical applications, there are situations when the fully hydrodynamic models are preferred despite a larger cost for computations. The present numerical model is implemented by the finite volume method （FVM） based on unstructured grids. The model can be efficiently switched between hydrostatic and non-hydrostatic modules. The case study shows that for waves pro- pagating along the bar a criterion with respect to the shallowness alone, the ratio between the depth and the wave length, is insufficient to warrant the performance of shallow flow equations with a hydrostatic approach and the nonlinearity in wave dynamics can be better accounted with a hydrodynamic approach. Besides the prediction of the flows over complex bathymetries, for instance, over asymmetrical dunes, by a hydrodynamic approach is shown to be superior in accuracy to the hydrostatic simulation.

Prebiotic peptide synthesis is a central issue concerning life's origins. Many studies considered that life might come from Hadean deep-sea environment, that is, under high hydrostatic pressure conditions.However, the properties of prebiotic peptide formation under high hydrostatic pressure conditions have seldom been mentioned. Here we report that the yields of dipeptides increase with raised pressures.Significantly, effect of pressure on the formation of dipeptide was obvious at relatively low temperature.Considering that the deep sea is of high hydrostatic pressure, the pressure may serve as one of the key factors in prebiotic peptide synthesis in the Hadean deep-sea environment. The high hydrostatic pressure should be considered as one of the significant factors in studying the origin of life.

Thermal Fluid-Solid Interaction Model and Experimental Validation for hydrostatic Mechanical Face Seals

hydrostatic mechanical face seals for reactor coolant pumps are very important for the safety and reliability of pressurized-water reactor power plants.More accurate models on the operating mechanism of the seals are needed to help improve their performance.The thermal fluid–solid interaction（TFSI）mechanism of the hydrostatic seal is investigated in this study.Numerical models of the flow field and seal assembly are developed.Based on the mechanism for the continuity condition of the physical quantities at the fluid–solid interface,an on-line numerical TFSI model for the hydrostatic mechanical seal is proposed using an iterative coupling method.Dynamic mesh technology is adopted to adapt to the changing boundary shape.Experiments were performed on a test rig using a full-size test seal to obtain the leakage rate as a function of the differential pressure.The effectiveness and accuracy of the TFSI model were verified by comparing the simulation results and experimental data.Using the TFSI model,the behavior of the seal is presented,including mechanical and thermal deformation,and the temperature field.The influences of the rotating speed and differential pressure of the sealing device on the temperature field,which occur widely in the actual use of the seal,are studied.This research proposes an on-line and assembly-based TFSI model for hydrostatic mechanical face seals,and the model is validated by full-sized experiments.

Transport properties of topological nodal-line semimetal candidate CaAs_3 under hydrostatic pressure

We report the transport properties of the CaAs_3 single crystal, which has been predicted to be a candidate for topological nodal-line semimetals. At ambient pressure, CaAs_3 exhibits semiconducting behavior with a small gap, while in some crystals containing tiny defects or impurities, a large "hump" in the resistivity is observed around 230 K. By applying hydrostatic pressure, the samples appear to a tendency towards metallic behavior, but not fully metallized up to 2 GPa.Further high pressure studies are needed to explore the topological characteristics for CaAs_3.

Processing of AM60 magnesium alloy by hydrostatic cyclic expansion extrusion at elevated temperature as a new severe plastic deformation method

hydrostatic cyclic expansion extrusion(HCEE) process at elevated temperatures is proposed as a method for processing less deformable materials such as magnesium and for producing long ultrafine-grained rods. In the HCEE process at elevated temperatures, high-pressure molten linear low-density polyethylene(LLDPE) was used as a fluid to eliminate frictional forces. To study the capability of the process,AM60 magnesium rods were processed and the properties were investigated. The mechanical properties were found to improve significantly after the HCEE process. The yield and ultimate strengths increased from initial values of 138 and 221 MPa to 212 and 317 MPa, respectively.Moreover, the elongation was enhanced due to the refined grains and the existence of high hydrostatic pressure. Furthermore, the microhardness was increased from HV 55.0 to HV 72.5. The microstructural analysis revealed that ultrafine-grained structure could be produced by the HCEE process. Moreover, the size of the particles decreased, and these particles thoroughly scattered between the grains. Finite element analysis showed that the HCEE was independent of the length of the sample, which makes the process suitable for industrial applications.

In this report,the dielectric and hydrostatic piezoelectric properties of the monoclinic bismuth triborate crystals(BiBO,BIBO)were investigated at ambient temperature for potential hydrophone application.The pressure dependence of the hydrostatic charge and voltage coefficients dielectric properties(d and g),and hydrostatic figure of merit(FOM)d×g were also studied.Results indicated that the BIBO crystals possess low dielectric loss being on the order ofhydrostatic piezoelectric coefficient d for BIBO crystals was experimentally obtained to be d=3.3 pC/N,while the piezoelectric hydrostatic coefficient g was obtained to be on the order of g=44.4×10V·m/N.Moreover,the FOM value was found to be on the order of 0.15 pm/N,comparable to that of PMN-PT single crystals(0.12-0.78 pm/N).In addition,the pressure coefficient a/d(1.0×10ppm/Pa)was calculated and found much lower than the reported PMN-PT single crystals(.001 ppm/Pa).

Effects of High hydrostatic Pressure on the Solubilities and Structures of Alaska Pollock Protein

Alaska pollock is an important protein source which is extensively used in the food industry. Pollock protein isolates(PPI) with significantly enriched protein contents could be prepared using isoelectric solubilization/precipitation(ISP) processing; however, the functional properties of this process is limited by the large amount of water-insoluble proteins. In this study, we investigated the influence of high hydrostatic pressure(HHP) treatment on the solubility and structural changes of PPI. PPI obtained using ISP is treated with hydrostatic pressures of 200, 300, 400, and 500 MPa for up to 15 min, and the HHP-treated samples were observed to exhibit significantly improved solubilities. Further biochemical assays reveal that the continuous HHP treatments reduce the contents of free sulfhydryl groups and promote the formation of macromolecules with better water solubilities, which may induce the solubility improvements of the HHP-treated PPI. Our results indicate that HHP can be utilized to effectively prepare highly water-soluble Alaska pollock protein in food processing.

Effect of Operating Condition and Structural Parameter in the hydrostatic Thrust CO_2 Bearing

hydrostatic thrust bearings are widely applied in rotating machinery field. Its comprehensive performance and safe operation is of great significance for ensuring equipment efficiency. In this paper, the numerical method is adopted to investigate the slit-restricted hydrostatic thrust CO_2 bearing with a small film thickness. The research is carried out from two aspects, which mainly consider the operating conditions and structural parameters. Firstly, the influence of different working fluid types including real air and CO_2(include subcritical and supercritical state) on the static characteristics of bearing is studied, and the results indicate that the bearing with CO_2 as working fluid has a better static performance. Secondly, the influence of rotor rotating speed is studied and the conclusion shows that the rotating speed has a significant effect on bearing static characteristics. Thirdly, the influence of different slit arrangement forms is investigated, and the consequence indicates that the circumferential slits show a better load capacity than that of radial slits, while the flow rate difference is small. Finally, the effect of film thickness on bearing static performance is investigated and the research shows that this factor affects static performance in a dramatical way. When the clearance tends to be smaller, the load capacity increases sharply, while the massflow rate of working fluid decreases.
