hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine kaolinite

The hydrophobic aggregation of ultrafine kaolinite in cationic surfactant suspension was investigated by sedimentation test,zeta potential measurement and SEM observation. SEM images reveal that kaolinite particles show the self-aggregation of edge-face in acidic media,the aggregation of edge-face and edge-edge in neutral media,and the dispersion in alkaline media due to electrostatic repulsion. In the presence of the dodecylammonium acetate cationic surfactant and in neutral and alkaline suspension,the hydrophobic aggregation of face-face is demonstrated. The zeta potential of kaolinite increases with increasing the concentration of cationic surfactant. The small and loose aggregation at a low concentration but big and tight aggregation at a high concentration is presented. At pH=7 alkyl quarterly amine salt CTAB has the best hydrophobic aggregation among three cationic surfactants,namely,dodecylammonium acetate,alkyl quarterly amine salts 1227 and CTAB.

aggregation-induced emission(AIE)is a phenomenon where a molecule that is weakly or non-luminescent in a diluted solution becomes highly emissive when *** luminogens(AIEgens)hold promise in diverse applications like bioimaging,chemical sensing,and *** in AIE luminescence is also critical for understanding aggregation kinetics as the aggregation process is an essential component of AIE *** investigation of AIEgen aggregation is challenging due to the fast timescale of the aggregation and the amorphous aggregate *** simulations such as molecular dynamics(MD)simulation provide a valuable approach to complement experiments with atomic-level knowledge to study the fast dynamics of aggregation ***,individual simulations still struggle to systematically elucidate heterogeneous kinetics of the formation of amorphous AIEgen *** network models(KNMs),constructed from an ensemble of MD simulations,hold great potential in addressing this *** these models,dynamic processes are modeled as a series ofMarkovian transitions occurring among metastable conformational states at discrete time *** this perspective article,we first review previous studies to characterize the AIEgen aggregation kinetics and their *** then introduce KNMs as a promising approach to elucidate the complex kinetics of aggregations to address these *** importantly,we discuss our perspective on linking the output of KNMs to experimental observations of time-resolved AIE *** expect that this approach can validate the computational predictions and provide great insights into the aggregation kinetics for AIEgen *** insights will facilitate the rational design of improved AIEgens in their applications in biology and materials sciences.

Strengthening poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) hydrogels using biochars and hydrophobic aggregations

As the first version of synthetic hydrogel,poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)hydrogels have found broad ***,their poor mechanical performances have been longstanding hurdles for practical ***,we report on strengthening the poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)hydro-gels with biochar nanoparticles and hydrophobic aggregations,which are induced by solvent exchange and reinforced by *** the vast anchoring points on the multifunc-tional surfaces of the biochar nanoparticles and the aggregates formed between poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)chains engender strong and dissipative physical *** result-ing hydrogels exhibit marked mechanical properties,encom-passing high stretchability~7,high fracture toughness~1360 J m−2,high elastic modulus~180 kPa,low friction coefficient~0.2,self-recovery,and ***,we demonstrate the versatility of the proposed strategy by using water/ionic liquid binary solvent as the sol-vent system,Laponite as the nano-reinforcement,and dryanneal as the hydrophobic aggregation enhancer to synthesize mechanically robust ***(2-hydroxyethyl methacry-late)hydrogels of superior mechanical properties are expected to enable previously inaccessible applications in biomedicine and engineering.

Cold-induced shape memory hydrogels for strong and programmable artificial muscles

Thermo-responsive shape memory hydrogels generally achieve shape fixation at low temperatures,and shape recovery at high ***,these hydrogels usually suffer from poor mechanical ***,we present a unique poly(acrylic acid)/calcium acetate shape memory hydrogel with cold-induced shape recovery performances as ultrastrong artificial *** the acetate groups could form aggregate at high temperatures and thus induce the association of the hydrogel network,the hydrogel can be fixed into a temporary shape upon heating and recover to its original shape in a cold ***,a programmable shape recovery process is realized by adjusting the shape fixing *** addition,the unique shape memory process enables the application demonstration as bio-inspired artificial muscles with an ultrahigh work density of45.2 kJ m^(-3),higher than that of biological muscles(~8 kJ m^(-3)).
