1D-2D hydraulic modeling of a Diversion Channel on the Cavally River in Zouan-Hounien,Cote d’Ivoire

On the Cavally River, located on the border between C?te d’Ivoire and Liberia, several hydraulic structures such as bridges and diversion channels are planned to be made in recent years in the operating perimeter of the Ity mining company. A 1D-2D hydraulic model was developed to design a diversion channel to cut a meander of the Cavally River in order to ensure hydraulic operation similar to the initial conditions of the river (water levels, flow and velocities). This model was designed with a flow rate of 240 m3/s and a Manning coefficient of 0.052 m1/3·s-1 for the minor bed and 0.06 m1/3·s-1 for the major bed. The results from the hydraulic model show that the hydraulic conditions (water levels, velocities) in the channel before and after the diversion remain almost like those of the Cavally River.

Energy dissipation on stepped spillways and hydraulic challenges—Prototype and laboratory experiences

Stepped cascades, chutes and spillways have been in use for more than three millennia. With the introduction of new construction materials and techniques, the staircase chute design has regained some interest within the last forty years. The stepped invert increases significantly the energy dissipation occurring above the steep chute and reduces the size of the required downstream stilling structure. The application of stepped chutes further encompasses in-stream re-aeration and water treatment plant cascades, to enhance the air-water transfer of atmospheric gases and of volatile organic components. However, the engineering design of stepped spillways is not simple because of the hydrodynamic challenges, with several markedly different flow regimes, some complicated two-phase air-water fluid dynamics and massive rate of energy dissipation above the stepped chute. Simply, the technical challenges in the hydraulic design of stepped spillways are massive. This review paper examines the hydraulic characteristics of stepped chute flows and develops a reflection on nearly three decades of active hydraulic research, including recent field measurements during major flood events. The author aims to share his passion for the complicated hydraulic engineering, as well as some advice for engineering professionals and researchers.

Simulating the fate of indigenous antibiotic resistant bacteria in a mild slope wastewater polluted stream

The fate of indigenous surface-water and wastewater antibiotic resistant bacteria in a mild slope stream simulated through a hydraulic channel was investigated in outdoor *** effect of（i） natural（dark） decay,（ii） sunlight,（iii） cloudy cover,（iv） adsorption to the sediment,（v） hydraulic conditions,（vi） discharge of urban wastewater treatment plant（UWTP）effluent and（vii） bacterial species（presumptive Escherichia coli and enterococci） was ***-life time（T1/2） of E. coli under sunlight was in the range 6.48–27.7 min（initial bacterial concentration of 10^5 CFU/mL） depending on hydraulic and sunlight conditions. E. coli inactivation was quite similar in sunny and cloudy day experiments in the early 2 hr, despite of the light intensity gradient was in the range of 15–59 W/m^2; but subsequently the inactivation rate decreased in the cloudy day experiment（T1/2= 23.0 min） compared to sunny day（T1/2= 17.4 min）. The adsorption of bacterial cells to the sediment（biofilm） increased in the first hour and then was quite stable for the remaining experimental time. Finally, when the discharge of an UWTP effluent in the stream was simulated, the proportion of indigenous antibiotic resistant E. coli and enterococci was found to increase as the exposure time increased, thus showing a higher resistance to solar inactivation compared to the respective total populations.

The Importance of Digital Elevation Model Selection in Flood Simulation and a Proposed Method to Reduce DEM Errors:A Case Study in Shanghai

Digital Elevation Models(DEMs)play a critical role in hydrologic and hydraulic *** inundation mapping is highly dependent on the accuracy of *** vertical differences exist among open access DEMs as they use various observation satellites and *** problem is particularly acute in small,flat coastal ***,it is necessary to assess the differences of the input of DEMs in flood simulation and to reduce anomalous errors of *** this study,we first conducted urban flood simulation in the Huangpu River Basin in Shanghai by using the LISFLOOD-FP hydrodynamic model and six open-access DEMs(SRTM,MERIT,CoastalDEM,GDEM,NASADEM,and AW3D30),and analyzed the differences in the results of the flood inundation ***,we processed the DEMs by using two statistically based methods and compared the results with those using the original *** results show that:(1)the flood inundation mappings using the six original DEMs are significantly different under the same simulation conditions—this indicates that only using a single DEM dataset may lead to bias of flood mapping and is not adequate for high confidence analysis of exposure and flood management;and(2)the accuracy of a DEM corrected by the Dixon criterion for predicting inundation extent is improved,in addition to reducing errors in extreme water depths—this indicates that the corrected datasets have some performance improvement in the accuracy of flood simulation.A freely available,accurate,high-resolution DEM is needed to support robust flood ***-related researchers,practitioners,and other stakeholders should pay attention to the uncertainty caused by DEM quality.

modeling the effects of rainfall on vehicular traffic

Traffic management and drainage system are two vital issues for any metropolitan city. Like other big cities, Karachi is also facing problems due to lack of traffic management and poor drainage system. The main objective of the study is to model the interdisciplinary issues of storm water and its effect on the traffic of Karachi. The specific objectives are （1） to calibrate and validate urban hydraulic and traffic micro-simulation models and （2） to model storm water and traffic for future conditions. This study is carried out on a 3-km section of arterial road. In this study, loose coupling of two models is done. For urban drainage, PCSWMM, and for traffic, VISSIM is used. Both models are calibrated for an existing situation on rainfall event of August 3, 2013, and then used for prediction of future scenario based on 50-year and 100-year return periods of rainfall. Sensitivity analysis of VISSIM is performed. Locations and lengths of road sections, where ponding happens for the future scenario, are identified using PCSWMM. These lengths axe then marked in VISSIM as low-speed areas, and delays are measured. Analysis of PCSWMM shows that for 100-year return period, there is maximum 0.318 ha-m （3180 cubic meters） water stored in the depressions of the road after 10 h of rainfall. Analysis of VISSIM shows that for a 100-year return period, there is a maximum delay of 35 min on NIPA to Hasan Square section of University Road.

Inundation Maps for Extreme Flood Events at the Mouth of the Danube River

Hydrodynamic modeling is used to analyse the inundation behavior of St. George village during extreme flood events, in particular for a flood happened in spring 2006. The study reach, 4 km in length, is situated in the Danube Delta, at the mouth of St. George distributary and includes St. George village. Land and bathymetric surveys were used to create a digital terrain model (DTM) of the river channel and the village. By coupling the geometry with hydrologic data, a 2D hydrodynamic model was built up with the help of the CCHE2D code (University of Mississippi). The model is based on integrating Saint-Venant shallow waters (depth averaged) equations through finite-difference implicit numerical scheme. It was calibrated in terms of roughness coefficients on measured values of water surface elevation registered in the St. George port. Flood maps obtained from computations were compared to satellite images from the same days of the spring 2006 extreme event. Inundation behaviour of the St. George village was analysed for different scenarios of river hydrological and sea level (variable because of wind waves) conditions. Findings were compared with high water marks and inhabitants testimonials. The model proved that sea level has a higher influence upon the inundability of the area than the river flood events.
