A Triple Nexus Water-Energy-housing (WEH) Framework Modelling towards Improved Decision-Making in Humanitarian Operations

Given the challenges facing most humanitarian operations worldwide, a change of approach is needed to ensure greater sustainability of humanitarian settlements right from the planning stage. Some studies attribute unsustainability to inadequate provision of basic resources and highlight the apparent bottlenecks that prevent access to the meaningful data needed to plan and remedy problems. Most operations have relied on an “ad hoc ism” approach, employing parallel and disconnected data processing methods, resulting in a wide range of data being collected without subsequent prioritization to optimize interconnections that could enhance performance. There have been little efforts to study the trade-offs potentially at stake. This work proposes a new framework enabling all subsystems to operate in a single system and focusing on data processing perspective. To achieve this, this paper proposes a Triple Nexus Framework as an attempt to integrate water, energy, and housing sector data derived from a specific sub-system within the overall system in the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering. Understanding the synergies between water, energy, and housing, Systems Engineering characterizes the triple nexus framework and identifies opportunities for improved decision-making in processing operational data from these sectors. Two scenarios illustrate how an integrated platform could be a gateway to access meaningful operational data in the system and a starting point for modeling integrated human settlement systems. Upon execution, the model is tested for nexus megadata processing, and the optimization simulation yielded 67% satisfactory results, demonstrating that an integrated system could improve sustainability, and that capacity building in service delivery is more than beneficial.

Effects of intervention policies on speculation in housing market:Evidence from China

The real estate market in China is often subject to government intervention while it is widely believed that speculation is one of the driving forces for the dramatic increase in house price.By controlling macroeconomic factors,we detect two types of speculative traders,fundamentalists and chartists,respectively.Fundamentalists rely on fundamental value for trading while chartists hold a momentum expectation.We further assess the effects of government intervention policies on house price and speculation.The tightening policy cools down while the stimulating policy enhances the speculation.The contrasting effects of different policies on speculations indicate the challenge in handling the Chinese housing market.

Interventions for vector-borne diseases focused on housing and hygiene in urban areas:a scoping review

Background:Over half the world’s human populations are currently at risk from vector-borne diseases(VBDs),and the heaviest burden is borne by the world’s poorest people,communities,and countries.The aim of this study was to conduct a review on VBD interventions relevant to housing and hygiene(including sanitation and waste management)in urban areas.Main body:We conducted a scoping review,which involved systematically searching peer-reviewed and grey literature published between 2000 and 2016 using five scientific databases and one database for grey literature.Different data extraction tools were used for data coding and extraction.We assessed the quality of each study using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and extracted descriptive characteristics and data about implementation process and transferability from all studies using the Template for Intervention Description and Replication and ASTAIRE(a tool for analyzing the transferability of health promotion interventions)tools.We reviewed 44 studies.Overall,the studies were judged to be of high risk for bias.Our results suggest multifaceted interventions,particularly community-based interventions,have the potential to achieve wider and more sustained effects than do standard vertical single-component programs.The evaluations of multifaceted interventions tend to include integrated evaluations,using not only entomological indicators but also acceptability and sustainability indicators.Conclusions:This review highlighted the important need for higher quality research in VBDs and improved and standardized reporting of interventions.Significant research gaps were found regarding qualitative research and implementation research,and results highlighted the need for more interventions focus on sanitation and hygiene practices.

The economic, technological, and cultural transformations of our present society influence various scales of our daily lives. In housing, these transformations include changes in the family nucleus and the activities performed in living spaces. housing flexibility seeks to meet the muitipte needs of users by changing their living spaces and functions. This study aims to explore housing flexibility through a review of relevant literature, discussion of valuable findings, and presentation of a contemporary panorama of the theme. Notions of flexibility are integrated to reinterpret the contemporary sense of dwelling. However, the lack of a well-defined concept of flexibility hinders the integration of methods and theories on the subject.

The Differentiated Effect of Administrative Policy in China’s housing Market——Based on the Heterogeneous Households Multi-Agent Model

Since 2010,Chinese government has introduced a series of administrative policies to limit speculation in the housing market to stabilize price fluctuations and keep the housing market in a healthy state of development.In order to investigate whether administrative policy can play its due role,this paper constructs a comprehensive bottom-up housing market heterogeneous households multiagent model(HHMAM)to undertake research on the differentiated effect of administrative policy in different cities.The empirical studies find that:1)Administrative policy that increases interest rates will cause housing prices to continue to decline in the long term,but they will resume a rising trend after reaching the lowest point;2)If the government cancels a property-purchasing limitation,housing prices will continue to rise;and 3)investors tend to invest in 1st-tier cities due to the high demand and greater likelihood of appreciation in these cities.

Quantifying Environmental Impacts of Temporary housing at the Urban Scale: Intersection of Vulnerability and PostHurricane Relief in New Orleans

The increasing risk and exposure of people and assets to natural hazards and disasters suggests an increasing need for temporary housing following disasters.Resilience to natural hazards is dependent on the resources available to families or communities to prepare for and mitigate risk,influenced by social vulnerability.This study seeks to quantify the total environmental impact of temporary housing deployment in New Orleans,using the catastrophic impact of Hurricane Katrina in southern Louisiana in August 2005 as a case example.We employ a novel approach to estimate displacement period and take into account social vulnerability across New Orleans neighborhoods to better understand the scale of post-disaster relief and its global warming potential.The methodology implemented in this study comprises three steps:a risk assessment,a life cycle assessment,and a resulting total impact assessment.We demonstrate the considerable risk of greenhouse gas emissions and energy impacts from temporary housing deployment linked to hurricane hazard.Furthermore,we show that environmental impact is highly sensitive to displacement period and find the current methodology of anticipating temporary housing use by hazard alone to be inadequate.Additionally,the approach presented in this article provides tools to politicians and disaster risk professionals that allow for resource investment planning to decrease social vulnerability,thus enhancing resilience and adaptive capacity in a more homogeneous way at the urban scale.

Review of economic and environmental benefits of earthen materials for housing in Africa

Solutions to housing problems must deal with the issue of building materials - especially advancing those which lower construction cost and costs to the environment. This paper aggregates and reviews empirical evidences to show the advantages and disadvantages of earthen construction materials in terms of cost, energy and thermal properties. We reviewed 136 academic outputs from 17 African countries. Apart from a few studies that differ, literature concurs that earthen construction materials are generally cheaper, cleaner and more thermally comfortable. Notwithstanding the advantages, the level of uptake is presently low. Earthen materials＇ strength and durability are key limitations. We identify possible areas for future research and present specific recommendations that can promote the uptake of earthen materials for housing construction in African cities.

Between city and home： Spaces of transition in London Postwar housing

In the period between the idealistic vision of the ＇Reshaping society＇ and Thatcherism, in the so-called ＇Swinging London’,the second wave of modernism is facing the demands and the quantities of bombed cities. The architects of that season, moved by political ideals and interpreting the cultural ferment, have been responsible for shaping the city on the collective dreams and aspirations of the society and for forging the identity of London as unique experience in the international panorama. This paper focuses on the spatial relations between city and home, how they raised in that specific historical context, in which form they realized, and what are the architectural implications for current design culture. The methodology, based both on the literature review and on the graphic comparison of six case-studies, is articulated in four steps. First, the six case-studies are selected according to specific criteria. Second, the sociohistorical background is reported. Third, the cases are shortly introduced using text descriptions and graphic tools. Fourth, the cases are compared. This process leads to the definition of four transversal architectural items： the density, the settlement pattern, the basement, and the threshold, intended as elements able to raise connections between past and contemporary design culture.
