Fine-grained NdFeB magnets prepared by low temperature pre-sintering and subsequent hot pressing

Fine-grained Nd10.79Pr2.8Al0.4B7.72Fe78.29 magnets were prepared by low temperature pre-sintering and subsequent hot pressing. The grain size of the magnets is just about 1–3 μm because the low sintering temperature results in no grain growth. The orientation degree, microstructure, and magnetic properties were studied. Some grains＇ easy axes deviate from the orientation direction, possibly due to grain rotation during the hot pressing. By subsequent annealing, the magnetic properties were significantly enhanced. Especially, the squareness of the demagnetization curve was improved *** enhancement of coercivity by annealing can be explained by an improvement of both grain boundaries and magnetic isolation, which decouples the exchange interaction between neighboring grains.

The effect of laser surface texturing on the tribological performance of different Sialon ceramic phases

A tribological performance was carried out on different types of hot press Sialon ceramics regarding the phases, i.e., the α-Sialon phase, the β-Sialon phase, and the α/β-Sialon composite phase. The different phases of Sialon ceramics were analyzed by XRD patterns. For the tribological performance, the Sialon ceramics were laser textured and the starved lubrication method was applied with different dimple pitches under a load of 10 N at room temperature. The material having a dimple pitch of 200 mm shows the lowest coefficient of friction. The α/β-Sialon composite phase shows the least coefficient of friction i.e. 0.04 and 0.1 for the textured and polished(without being textured) samples, respectively. The Sialon ceramics show mild wear and therefore, the wear rate of the steel ball(mating partner) was taken into account for the wear analysis. The α-Sialon phase having a higher hardness shows the least wear in comparison to the α/β-Sialon composite phase and the β-Sialon phase.

The present study on the use of flax stems as reinforcement for green composites has three major objectives:1) to use a variety of flax normally cultivated for its seeds, not for its fibers, in a textile-related application;2) to avoid the wastage and pollution resulting from the traditional burning of these stems;and3) to incorporate them almost directly in composites.First seed-flax stems were cut the same length and washed with hot water. Their outer fibrous layer was sometimes peeled so that only the wooden inner part would remain. Two types of reinforcement were thus prepared:wooden parts only (WOOD) and whole stems (STEM). Reinforcement pieces were then aligned parallel to each other, maintained together by Kevlar threads, and hot pressed (sometimes in a frame) between polypropylene PP or low-density polyethylene LDPE films to make laminae and laminates. The procedure followed was progressively improved by trying different processing settings such as temperature, pressure, and press time, and by changing such parameters as the arrangement of stems, the number of polymer films, etc.Finally samples were cut in the composites and subjected to tensile and bending tests. The results obtained showed that STEM composites exhibit higher mechanical properties due to the presence of fibers in the outer layer of the reinforcement pieces. Tensile strength and modulus are respectively comprised between20-35MPa and3.2-6.7GPa. The final behavior depends much on the orientation of reinforcement pieces in the composites, the relative quantity of polymer and the processing conditions, such as temperature and the use of a frame. For LDPE laminates made with a frame, the bending strength (60-70MPa) was much increased compare to pure LDPE (10-40MPa) and three-layered PMDI wood particle boards reinforced with flax straw mats (25-40Mpa).
