Gender Differences in hope and Its Relevance to Depression Symptoms among Norwegian Adolescents

Introduction: Several studies indicate that the number of individuals experiencing depression symptoms is growing. There is a prevailing consensus in the literature that while depression is represented among both genders, it is consistently reported that females are more exposed to depression compared to males both in frequency and severity. Studies suggest that as many as 15 - 20 percent of adolescents in Norway exhibit depression or depression like symptoms. Furthermore, several studies indicate that the number of individuals experiencing depression symptoms is growing. There is a prevailing consensus in the literature that while depression is represented among both genders, it is consistently reported that females are more exposed to depression compared to males both in frequency and severity. Methods: All data utilized in this study were extracted from the Norwegian Ungdata survey conducted in 2014 among adolescents in Norway. The sample consists of 46,374 observations. Conclusions: The finding of significant differences in prevalence of self-diagnosed depression symptoms among Norwegian adolescents, showed females are more exposed. Furthermore, as hypothesized, there is a strong and significant relation between hope and depression, where hope is proxied through expectations regarding the individuals’ future education, happiness and wealth. Based on these findings, we apply hope as an instrument for addressing depression symptoms. Results from this analysis indicate that males are significantly less optimistic for the future.

Quality of life and hope in elderly people with cancer

Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between hope and symptom burden, and to explore the mediating effect of resilience in this relationship among postsurgical head and neck cancer survivors. Methods: A total of 203 patients were recruited from otorhinolaryngology department of one hospital in Shandong province. The M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory Head and Neck(MDASI-HN), Adult Dispositional hope Scale(ADHS), and the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale(CD-RISC10) were administered. Structural equation modeling analysis was conducted to examine the association between hope and symptom burden, and the mediating effect of resilience. Results: hope and resilience were significant negatively correlated with symptom burden(r=-0.750,-0.809, P hope was significant positively correlated with resilience(r=0.901, P hope and symptom burden in which the indirect effect of hope and symptom burden through resilience was-0.68(P hope has a direct effect on symptom burden, and can indirectly affect symptom burden via resilience. The most important implication of this study was that improving hope and resilience might be scientific intervention strategies for alleviating symptom burden among postsurgical head and neck cancer survivors.

The aim of this study was to describe the charac-teristics in Quality of Life (QoL) and hope in eld-erly people newly diagnosed with cancer, and to compare the results for those who survived six months after diagnosis with those who did not. The design of the study was a quantitative study in-cluding drop-out analysis. Data were collected pro-spectively from a group of 101 older people with cancer. The core questionnaire EORTC QLQ-C30 was used to measure QoL and Nowotny’s hope Scale (NHS) was employed to measure hope. Par-ticipants who died within six months of diagnosis had significantly lower QoL and had more com-plaints about symptoms compared to those who survived. However, hope did not differ significantly between those who died and those who survived. Despite lower QoL score among those who died they were able to deal with their difficult situation and maintain hope in late life. This capacity seems to be an important component of hope in the elderly;thus it is essential to strengthen hope.

Purpose: To develop and test the face and content validity of a scale that assesses an individual’s adaptation and expression of hope to a life changing events, disease or trauma. Method: The hope and Adaptation Scale was developed and tested across three stages. Stage 1 involved the use of a review of literature to conceptually map the tool. Stage 2 required exploratory investigations of the questionnaire by members of an expert panel. Stage 3 assessed the construct validity of the resulting scale. Results: Through the processes of Stage 1 and 2, the tool was developed and reduced to a 3-item scale that assessed a spectrum of hope-related responses and a spectrum of adaptation-related responses. Stage 3 identified fifteen independent health care professionals who assessed the scale. The content validity index of the resultant scale was 0.6 that was above the required level to be acceptable. The hope spectrum responses scored the highest content validity ratio (0.73). Discussion: The proposed scale appears to have face and content validity for application to a various number of events, disease or trauma experiences. Further testing of the scale is required for application in specific population groups.

Maternal Health Care in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh: A Survey of Midwifery Experience at hope Foundation and a Review of the Literature

Background: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of Bangladesh developed a midwifery education strategy in 2011 and starting in 2013, BRAC University developed a three-year Diploma in Midwifery. A survey was developed to understand the challenges of the newly graduated midwives and to identify resource and educational needs. The survey feedback will help develop and strengthen curriculum for primary and postgraduate midwifery training. Methods: A 30-question survey was given to midwives at the hope Hospital in Cox’s Bazar and at the birth centers in the surrounding rural communities. Questions explored the midwives’ clinical experience, patient problems in the prenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal period, and asked about what education;training and clinical resources were needed. Results: Thirty-two midwives answered the surveys. The midwives’ average time from graduation from the midwifery diploma program was sixteen months. All the respondents felt comfortable managing most maternal issues but felt further training was important. They also identified the lack of many clinical resources including blood products, medicines, vaccines, and ultrasound. They identified significant maternal health issues among their patients including adolescent pregnancy, malnutrition, anemia, sexual violence, pregnancy-induced hypertension, hemorrhage, low birth weight infants, prolonged and obstructed labors. Conclusion: Training and increasing the number of midwives are crucial strategies for reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. There is a significant need for long-term placement and commitment of midwives to rural areas in Bangladesh. Health systems and organizations employing midwives must be accountable for the continuing education, mentorship, and supportive needs of midwives.

Purpose: The purpose of the current research was to review the lived experiences of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) in order to extrapolate the psychological process of adaptation. Methods: A thematic synthesis was undertaken within 3 phases: systematic search for literature, critical appraisal of included studies and synthesis of research. Results: A total of 47 studies were included in this review, this included 1146 (812 females, 265 males, and 69 unknown) unique patients with MS (aggregated mean age: 49.3 years [30/47 studies], aggregated time with illness: 12.3 years [28/47 studies]). The critical appraisal of research illustrated that the design of the studies and the reference to reflexivity in studies were not well considered. The synthesis was able to identify a primary response of psychological adaptation as well as distinct coping strategies. A model of emotion, hope, and adjustment was identified. Conclusion: Simple processes of adaptation for people with MS can be considered by clinicians and utilised to promote mental well-being in patients. Clinicians and researchers also need to be aware of the important psychological needs of patients during interactions. Discussion and clinical implications are provided.

Despair is defined in the dictionary as the complete loss or absence of hope. Many if not most individuals feel a deep sense of despair, made more intense by the loneliness that is part of their lives. The power differentials between those who receive services and those who provide services often intensify this sense of despair and loneliness. It is in that relationship between the powerful and the powerless that loneliness and despair start to build, because there is no bridge between the people who serve and those being served. Those of us who provide services and supports to people in need have been taught to be objective and factual, but facts are only part of the story, the roadway so to speak. The foundations of the bridges between people are found in the emotional connections, the places where the stories of their lives take shape. In order to gain the whole story we must listen to the feelings, where the thematic images behind the words present the story of this person’s life.

The "Music of the Heart-2011" charity event, jointly sponsored by the Qingdao People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Italian Embassy in China, the Qingdao General Charity Institute and the Italy Faith Love hope Fund, was held in the seaside resort from August 26 to 28. The 800,000 RMB raised through Italian classical music concerts and the auctioning of handiworks made by children in the Qingdao Children Welfare Institution was donated to the facility. All the participants were deeply moved by the charity activities and experienced the profound love from a foreign country.
