Owing to their unique structural stability and impressive long-term cycling performance, coated hollow structures are highly attractive for energy storage systems, especially batteries. Many efforts have been devoted and various strategies have been proposed to prepare such materials. In the present work, we propose a self-templating thermolysis strateg different from traditional wet processing methods, to fabricate cuprous sulfide hollow spheres coated with different shells, by exploiting the thermal decomposition properties of the core （CuS） and the protection provided by the shell. To demonstrate the generality of this synthetic approach, three different coating materials （carbon, TiO2, MoS2） have been chosen to prepare Cu2_S@C, Cu2_S@TiO2 and Cu2_xS@MoS2 hollow spheres. All synthesized composite materials were then assembled as electrodes and tested in lithium batteries, showing excellent cycling stability. In particular, the electro- chemical properties of Cu2_xS@C were thoroughly investigated. The results of this work provide an alternative route to prepare coated metal sulfide hollow soheres for enerL^v storage aoDlications.

Unique self-assembled iron(II)molybdenum(IV)oxide(Fe_(2)Mo_(3)O_(8))mesoporous hollow spheres have been facilely constructed via the bubble-template-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method combined with simple *** compact assembly of small nanoparticles on the surface of the hollow spheres not only provides more active sites for the Fe_(2)Mo_(3)O_(8),but also benefits the stability of the hollow structure,and thus improved the lithium storage properties of *** Fe_(2)Mo_(3)O_(8) mesoporous hollow spheres exhibit high initial discharge and charge capacities of 1189 and 997 mA∙h∙g^(−1) respectively,as well as good long-term cycling stability(866 mA∙h∙g^(−1) over 70 cycles)when used as a lithium-ion battery *** feasible material synthesis strategy will inspire the variation of structural design in other ternary metal molybdates.

In order to detect low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for the early diagnosis of lung cancer, sensors based on hollow spheres of In_(2)O_(3) were prepared through the soft template method. Ag nanoparticle decorated In_(2)O_(3) composites were synthesized via dipping and annealing. The microstructure, phase composition, element distribution, and state of Ag were analyzed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The gas sensing tests showed that Ag-In_(2)O_(3) sensors had the highest response to isopropanol at 300 ℃. The best response of Ag-In_(2)O_(3) composite sensor was 5.2, which had a significant improvement compared with only In_(2)O_(3). Moreover, the response and recovery time of Ag-In_(2)O_(3) composite sensor was significantly shortened. The improved sensing properties of Ag-In_(2)O_(3) composite sensor could be attributed to the Schottky barrier created at Ag-In_(2)O_(3) interface and catalytical effect of Ag.

C,N,S-tridoped TiO2 hollow spheres （labeled as C,N,S-THs） were synthesized using carbon spheres as template and C,N,S-tridoped TiO2 nanoparticles as building blocks. The structure and physicochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized by X- ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum （DRS）, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） and Photoluminescence emission spectroscopy （PL）. The results showed that the hollow spheres had average diameter of about 200 nm and the shell thickness was about 20 nm. The tridoped TiO2 hollow spheres exhibited strong absorption in the visible-light region. C,N,S-tridoped could narrow the band gap of the THs by mixing the orbit O 2p with C 2p, N 2p and S 3p orbits and shift its optical response from ultraviolet （UV） to the visible-light region. PL analysis indicated that the electron-hole recombination rate of TiO2 hollow spheres had been effectively inhibited when doped with C, N and S elements. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated for the degradation of X-3B （Reactive Brilliant Red dye, C.I. Reactive Red 2） aqueous solution under visible-light （λ 〉 420 nm） irradiation. It was found that the C,N,S-tridoped TiO2 hollow spheres indicated higher photocatalytic activity than commercial P25 and the undoped counterpart photocatalyst.

Monoclinic BiVO4 hollow nanospheres were successfully prepared via template-free method using citric acid （C6H8O7） as chelating agent and characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, transmission electron microscope, UV-Vis DRS, and TG-DTA technique. C6H8O7 played an important role in the formation of hollow spheres. Morphology observations revealed that when appropriate amount of C6H8O7 was introduced, the cavity with the diameter of 40 nm was obtained in BiVO4 nanospheres. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicated that the samples had absorption in both UV and visible light region. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under Xe lamp irradiation. hollow spheres endow BiVO4 samples with greatly improved photocatalytic activity. A possible formation mechanism of hollow spheres was proposed.

In this work, single- and double-shelled NiCo2O4 hollow spheres have been synthesized in situ by a one-pot solvothermal method assisted by xylose, followed by heat treatment. Employed as supercapacitor electrode materials, the double-shelled NiCo2O4 hollow spheres exhibit a remarkable specific capacitance （1,204.4 F g-1 at a current density of 2.0 A.g-1） and excellent cycling stability （103.6% retention after 10,000 cycles at a current density of 10 A.g-1）. Such outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to their unique internal morphology, which provides a higher surface area with a larger number of active sites available to interact with the electrolyte. The versatility of this method was demonstrated by applying it to other binary metal oxide materials, such as ZnCo2O4, ZnMn2O4, and CoMn2O4. The present study thus illustrates a simple and general strategy for the preparation of binary transition metal oxide hollow spheres with a controllable number of shells. This approach shows great promise for the development of next-generation high-performance electrochemical materials.

One-step synthesis of hierarchically porous hybrid TiO2 hollow spheres with high photocatalytic activity

Hierarchically porous hybrid TiO2 hollow spheres were solvothermally synthesized successfully by using tetrabutyl titanate as titanium precursor and hydrated metal sulfates as soft templates. The as-prepared TiO2 spheres with hierarchically pore structures and high specific surface area and pore volume consisted of highly crystallized anatase TiO2 nanocrystals hybridized with a small amount of metal oxide from the hydrated sulfate. The proposed hydrated-sulfate assisted solvothermal （HAS） synthesis strategy was demonstrated to be widely applicable to various systems. Evaluation of the hybrid TiO2 hollow spheres for the photo-decomposition of methyl orange （MO） under visible-light irradiation revealed that they exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity and durability.

TiO2-coated SnO2 （TCS） hollow spheres, which are new anode materials for lithium ion （Li-ion） batteries, were prepared and characterized with X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, transmission electron microscopy （TEM）, cyclic voltammetry （CV）, and galvanostatic charge/discharge tests. The results obtained from XRD, SEM, and TEM show that TiO2 can be uniforrrdy coated on the surface of SnO2 hollow spheres with the assistance of anionic surfactant. The cyclic voltammograms indicate that both TiO2 and SnO2 exhibit the activity for Li-ion storage. The charge/discharge tests show that the prepared TCS hollow spheres have a higher reversible coulomb efficiency and a better cycling stability than the uncoated SnO2 hollow spheres.
