Mass sales of imported vehicles hinge on the breakthrough of policy

Tariffs for imported vehicles have been reducing and quotas for imported vehicles increasing over the recent years. But this has not posed obvious impact to domestic-made vehicles, mainly as China adopts a measure of"importing more components and parts and few complete vehicles". The quotas are to first meet the demand of the domestic auto industry for key and set parts, which has not led to the sharp increase of imported complete vehicles. For the above-mentioned reasons, the price of imported vehicles has not plunged sharply.

The accuracy and effi ciency of the modelling techniques utilized to model the nonlinear behavior of structural components is a signifi cant issue in earthquake engineering. In this study, the suffi ciency of three diff erent modelling techniques that can be employed to simulate the structural behavior of columns is investigated. A fi ber-based fi nite length plastic hinge (FB-FLPH) model is calibrated in this study. In order to calibrate the FB-FLPH model, a novel database of the cyclic behavior of hollow steel columns under simultaneous axial and lateral loading cycles with varying amplitudes is used. By employing the FB-FLPH model calibrated in this study, the interaction of the axial force and the bending moment in columns is directly taken into account, and the deterioration in the cyclic behavior of these members is implicitly considered. The superiority of the calibrated FB-FLPH modelling approach is examined compared with the cases in which conventional fi ber-based distributed plasticity and concentrated plasticity models are utilized. The effi ciency of the enumerated modelling techniques is probed when they are implemented to model the columns of a typical special moment frame in order to prove the advantage of the FB-FLPH modelling approach.

The purpose of this thesis is to derive the flexibility formula of the corner-filleted flexure hinge easily and conveniently and use it to design a micro-rotation compliant mechanism. Firstly,we get the corner-filleted flexure hinge flexibility formula by methods of symmetry transformation and coordinates translation. The correctness of this formula is validated on the basis of the finite element method and under the premise that the effects of shear stress are taken into consideration. Then a micro-rotation compliant mechanism is designed in accordance with the corner-filleted flexure hinge,and the deduction and analysis of its working moment/rigidity are conducted. Moreover,this theoretical formula is proved to be accurate and reliable through the finite element analysis and the experimental verification,based on which the structural design and optimization can be made on the rotating part of a micro adjustment device. The results illustrate that designing and optimizing the structures by the analysis model is convenient and reliable so that complicated 3D modeling and finite element analysis are not needed.

Peirce as Playful/Play as Pivotal

This paper offers a portrait of C. S. Peirce as a playful thinker but also an account of play as that upon which much turns. He was, after all, a philosopher who in his maturity insisted, "a bit of fun helps thought and tends to keep it pragmatical." In doing so, however, Peirce showed in his youth how evasions of responsibility might, in their own way, often be instances of engagement at once playful and more deeply responsible than any attempt to meet the formal expectations of external authority. For the account of play as pivotal, the author draws upon Cornelius Castoriadis and, to a far greater extent, John Dewey. Moreover, he explores an apparently stark contrast between the Peircean emphasis upon habit and the Derridean celebration of play, showing that the opposition is not as thoroughgoing as it might appear. Interweaving Dewey's insights with Peirce's, the author highlights the power of intense play to melt the rigidity of sedimented habits and, thereby, to generate opportunities for habit-change. This suggests that the capacity to act in an imaginative or creative way both ineluctably draws upon habits but also inevitably modifies, often in a dramatic manner, these habits. If the ultimate logical interpretant of a sign-process is, as Peirce suggests, a habit-change, then play is truly pivotal for seeing one of the most important ways in which such alteration takes place.

The effective utilisation of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) requires in-depth and detailed understanding of bonding mechanisms governing the tensile behaviour. In response to this demand, this study presents an empirical description of the axial force required to pull out a hooked end steel fibre from a cementitious matrix. It is based upon consistent experimental tests that show the force versus displacement plot is formed from a sequence of events in which partial and full debonding at the interface is followed by bending of the hook knee to raise the force to its maximum. A loss of peak force occurs with the reversed plasticity involved in a full straightening of the fibre that precedes the rapid sliding to its full removal under a falling force. The stages are assembled in the said order with a piecewise connection between linear segments and a curve of exponential decay. A power law can be introduced to describe the knee bending stage if preferred. The normalised co-ordinates were adopted for the simple mathematical discontinuous function of the full pull-out process. Normalising force and displacement for hooked fibre is based upon the maximum values found for straight fibre pull out. This would apply to an overall embedded length of unity and a unit peak force for a full debonding of straight fibre in similar materials. For hooked fibre the normalised co-ordinates given refer to the initiation and duration of each event to be tabulated at fractions of the embedded length with multiples of that force. Such predictions are seen to be in good agreement with average pull-out response curves.

Achievements are presented for truss models of RC structures developed in previous years: 1. Two constitutive models, biaxial and triaxial, are based on regular trusses, with bars obeying nonlinear uniaxial σ-ε laws of material under simulation;both models have been compared with test results and show a dependence of Poisson ratio on curvature of σ-ε law. 2. A truss finite element has been used in the nonlinear static and dynamic analysis of plane RC frames;it has been compared with test results and describes, in a simple way, the formation of plastic hinges. 3. Thanks to the very simple geometry of a truss, the equilibrium equations can be easily written and the stiffness matrix can be easily updated, both with respect to the deformed truss, within each step of a static incremental loading or within each time step of a dynamic analysis, so that to take into account geometric nonlinearities. So the confinement of a RC column is interpreted as a structural stability effect of concrete. And a significant role of the transverse reinforcement is revealed, that of preventing, by its close spacing and sufficient amount, the buckling of inner longitudinal concrete struts, which would lead to a global instability of the RC column. 4. The proposed truss model is statically indeterminate, so it exhibits some features, which are not met by the “strut-and-tie” model.

Flaporhexis, a technique to make the femtosecond laser corneal flap was developed primarily to reduce the mechanical trauma associated with separating the corneal tissue by taking advantage of the cornea’s natural anatomy and was first described in a peer reviewed artice in 2008. The anterior part of the cornea tends to be stronger, thereby allowing tearing (Greek “rhexis”) along the preformed cuts of the femtosecond photo disruption. Flaporhexis differs from Binder’s technique of “hinge opening” as published in 2006 by opening the flap from the opposite side. If a femtosecond flap lift is performed correctly, the surgeon will find a virgin, uniform, dry stromal bed, which had not been manipulated by any surgical instrument and is therefore perfect for wavefront guided laser surgery as “Sub-Bowman’s Keratomileusis”.
