Multi-dimensional wave steering with higher-order topological phononic crystal

The recent discovery and realizations of higher-order topological insulators enrich the fundamental studies on topological ***,we report three-dimensional(3D)wave-steering capabilities enabled by topological boundary states at three different orders in a 3D phononic crystal with nontrivial bulk topology originated from the synergy of mirror symmetry of the unit cell and a non-symmorphic glide symmetry of the *** multitude of topological states brings diverse possibilities of wave *** judicious engineering of the boundary modes,we experimentally demonstrate two functionalities at different dimensions:2D negative refraction of sound wave enabled by a firstorder topological surface state with negative dispersion,and a 3D acoustic interferometer leveraging on second-order topological hinge *** work showcases that topological modes at different orders promise diverse wave steering applications across different dimensions.

higher-order topological insulators(HOTIs),with topological corner or hinge states,have emerged as a thriving topic in the field of topological ***,few connections have been found for HOTIs with well-explored first-order topological *** a proposal asserted that a significant bridge can be established between the HOTIs and Z2 topological *** subjected to an inplane Zeeman field,corner states,the signature of the HOTIs,can be induced in a Z2 topological *** Zeeman fields can be produced,for example,by the ferromagnetic proximity effect or magnetic atom doping,which drastically increases the experimental ***,we show that a phononic crystal,designed as a bilayer of coupled acoustic cavities,exactly hosts the Kane-Mele model with built-in in-plane Zeeman *** helical edge states along the zigzag edges are gapped,and the corner states,localized spatially at the corners of the samples,appear in the *** verifies the Zeeman field induced higher-order *** further demonstrate the intriguing contrast properties of the corner states at the outer and inner corners in a hexagonal ring-shaped sample.

Nanopolaritonic second-order topological insulator based on graphene plasmons

Ultrastrong confinement,long lifetime,and gate-tunability of graphene plasmon polaritons(GPPs)motivate wide-ranging efforts to develop GPP-based active nanophotonic *** of topological phenomena into such platforms will ensure their robustness as well as enrich their capabilities as promising test beds of strong light–matter interactions.A recently reported approach suggests an experimentally viable platform for topological graphene plasmonics by introducing nanopatterned gates—*** propose a metagate-tuned GPP platform emulating a second-order topological crystalline *** metagate imprints its crystalline symmetry onto graphene by modulating its chemical potential via field-effect *** on the gate geometry and applied voltage,the resulting two-dimensional crystal supports either one-dimensional chiral edge states or zero-dimensional midgap corner *** proposed approach to achieving the hierarchy of nontrivial topological invariants at all dimensions lower than the dimension of the host material paves the way to utilizing higher-order topological effects for onchip and ultracompact nanophotonic waveguides and cavities.
